"Great location and imposingly grand hotel"
Took a few days off to see the Xmas markets in Berlin, found this hotel to be very comfortable and central to all the major markets. Be careful of the breakfast as you can get stung for the buffet breakfast if you do not EXPRESSLY make it clear that you do not want it. Paying 70 Euros for two coffees was a shade annoying. The markets were fun, but Hyde Park's Winter Wonderland makes the Berlin markets look very small. But the landmarks are worth visiting.
"A very nice hotel near down town and the American Embassy"
The hotel staff was extremely accommodating to our necessary early check in, and our rooms were ready. The breakfast was to die for, everything you would expect from a fine German Hotel. The hotel was beautifully decorated for Christmas.
"Wasn't overly impressed "
Just got back from Berlin - 4 night trip with my brother. We had booked a twin room but there seemed to be some sort of error in the booking and we actually got there to find a queen bed - no other rooms available and were told we'd have to come back and check everyday so he ended up booking somewhere else near checkpoint Charlie. The rooms are very nice, have all you need in them. Mini bar is a tad overpriced - 6€ for a small bottle of water. The internet is overpriced too - £15€ per day. My brothers hotel charged 1€ per day per device so a lot cheaper. I actually ended up getting a roaming deal with my uk mobile network for £3 per day so went with that. Had room service breakfast on the last day, was nice but nothing special. May have eat here for lunch or dinner but with my brother having to book another hotel we ended up eating out and meeting in between the hotels instead. The service from the staff was pleasant, but there was nothing that stood out unfortunately which is a shame for the price you pay.
"Traditional hotel in great location"
More famous now perhaps as a location in the Bourne Supremacy film (watch Jason check in and Pam walk around the balcony overlooking the central atrium) this traditional hotel scores highly on customer service, comfort and the warmth of the welcome. It scores even higher on its location on Friedrichstrasse (though not its front door to be truthful which is on a street off Friedrichstrasse - don't be fooled!) and its proximity to Unter den linden where the TXL airport bus (2.70 euros one way) stops inward and outward on a 30 minute journey. 23 euros will get you a taxi from the airport one way in around 15 minutes. Rooms are goodly sized with good bathrooms and amenities in room. Comfortable bed though on a double bed I will never get used to 2 single duvets. My only downside is the coffee machine which didn't work properly (you can find a work around on the internet to deliver a full mug of coffee if you pay for internet access) and I don't like coffee. Staff could not be more helpful and accommodating - friendliness and efficiency personified in that order. Very convenient for walking, sight seeing and public transport. Overall I really wouldn't fault the hotel except for the couple of niggles reported here. Breakfast was also very good but advertised at a quite expensive price I thought. I visited pe xmas and their hanging 'tree' was a joy to behold. Good service in the bar with prices a bit higher than out in a bar in berlin city. I do not like the modern trend to charge daily rates for internet - on a business trip as I was it is essential to access electronic documents and it doesn't matter that my employer is paying - for the price it should be included but the Westin Grand is not alone in Berlin in charging daily for internet.
"OK but not outstanding - also warning for SPG Plat members ..."
My wife and I stayed four nights and the Westin Grand over Thanksgiving weekend, and while we had no problems and enjoyed our stay, we both felt like something was missing from the usual SPG experience. For starters - and this is my warning to other SPG Platinum members - I was extremely disappointed with my "suite" upgrade. I used four of my Suite Night Upgrades from SPG, and was assigned a room the hotel called a "junior suite". In reality it was a large room with a couch - very far from anything like a suite. I'm frankly suprised SPG corporate would approve such a room as a "suite", but I suspect they give hotels lots of leeway in that regard. Still, Plats: Don't waste your upgrades here. Aside from the "suite" issue, the room was sparsely furnished and a bit in need of a refresh. The furnishings were in good enough condition but overall it looks and feels a bit dated. But on to the good things - of which there certainly are many. The breakfast buffet is excellent, with lots of the usual great options, both hot and cold. The lobby are is also quite nice and a beautiful place to relax and have a drink. I found the bar staff particularly pleasant, and I think overall the service from everyone on the hotel was one of the highlights. We definitely did feel like welcome guests. I probably would stay again if in Berlin, as the location is outstanding, the value proposition is reasonable, and I tend to be an SPG loyalist despite occasional setbacks. But I definitely wouldn't use a Suite Night Award here!
