"No five stars."
Great location, Mdina is wonderful. But no 5 stars from me. The hotel is not antique, just dated. Lots of noise from the kitchen, no bartender when the bar was open (had to go ask for drinks several times), plastic chairs in the lounge, vacuum cleaners left in the corridors, dirty cups and glasses on the tables all day long, someone who checked us in and who was acting as if she knew us very well... We had a duplex room, and the 'living room' was old and dated, and did not invite to lounge in, no one to get our suitcases when we left. Something which is OK in a middle-class hotel, but not in a five star residence.
"Xara Palace should not be Relais et Chateaux"
My wife and I are regular clients of R&C and have stayed in many of their hotels in Europe and the US. Three weeks ago we stayed at the Xara Palace in Malta for three nights. The building is lovely with a wonderful first floor. The service was first class. To get to our room, we took an elevator (a cheap unit that is not appropriate for such a hotel) to the third floor and walked through the restaurant. My first impression as we exited the elevator was this place is filthy. The dining room smells stale. The carpet is overdue for replacement by many, many years. Besides being worn it is stained. As you exit the elevator you pass the entrance to the kitchen on the left. The carpet there has a large grease stain from many years of servers exiting a greasy kitchen. The room we booked was, I believe, their best. We paid top dollar. It had a gate that closed it off from all the others. When we entered our room, everything was old, faded and in need of replacement. It looked like furniture you would see in a hostel that had been purchased at a flea market. The bathroom was remodeled poorly. Seams on the floor where cuts had been made were grimy and poorly sealed. Our Maltese friend's who had suggested we stay at the Xara were as surprised as we were and felt badly. H
We chose Mdina as our base as we wanted to be able to get to the hustle and bustle of Valletta and St. Julian's but return somewhere quiet and relaxing in the evening. The Xara Palace was spot on. The staff were fantastic and the hotel is perfectly located for access to some great restaurants. Would recommend to anyone looking to stay in the island.
This elegant comfortable hotel has an outstanding setting, being the only hotel within beautiful Mdina. Once the sun sets and the daily tourists have drifted out, you have this fortified city almost to yourself - there is something quite magical about the atmosphere, out of time. Walking through the smokey-lit alleys back to the hotel after dinner was a unique experience.
"3 day visit to Malta"
The staff were very helpful and always polite. The accommodation was first class and spotless. The food served in their restaurants was top quality. The Reception staff helped with taxi bookings, car hire and places to visit.
