"Great place to stay"
I was at first cautious about this place as the booking was made by my contacts. However, the experience after staying there for 6 nights exceeded my expectations. Located next to Beihang University in the Haidian area, its location may not be the closest to amenities, however, it's 200-300m location to the 西土城 (xitucheng) station on Line 10 helped immensely. For food options in the area, you might have to take the subway to 1 station away at 知春路 (zhichunlu) and find fast chinese food around the vicinity. A wal-mart is within 300m of this station, where you can get groceries, clothes and so on. Another option for food and amenities is to turn left from the hotel gate, walk towards the Beihang University East Gate 2, cross the overhead bridge and find comfort food such as KFC and McDonalds. Along this same street, you will also find a host of chinese foods, fruit shops and medical aid & devices shops along 华园北路 (huayuan north rd). It makes for an interesting walk just to explore the area. I stayed in the standard hotel room. The room size is decent for the business traveller. The bed does sink in the middle slightly, but I could live with it. For those sensitive to cigarette smoke, ask for a room on Level 17. Beijing laws prohibit smoking in hotel rooms. In practice, this is seldom enforced Beijing wide. Non-smoking floors are your best bet for smoke free environment, but there are of course no guarantees. The best experience I had was with the toilet. It was clean and well designed. Many good hotels have failed in this area. For instance, in the standing shower stall, you are standing on a raised platform of marble/granite that is grooved so that you do not slip in the shower. A moat surrounds this platform and drains the water beautifully. The shower screens were sealed in the right places to prevent splashing outside of the shower stall, reducing the chance of any potential slips and falls. A short but useful clothes line can be extended in the shower stall to dry clothes. For entertainment, there are only chinese TV channels, and one English CCTV channel. I also ordered room service one evening. The servings were huge. Food taste was nothing to shout about, but it spared me from walking out in the polluted air to find food. There are numerous lighting options in the room. You can have soft dim mood lighting; or a totally bright and blinding experience. A night light is also in installed below the wardrobe, providing soft lighting needed for visits to the bathroom in the dark. The gym is spacious and decently equipped with machines mainly for the upper body. 2 ping pong tables and pool tables are also available for use. Overall, I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. But as always in China, English language skills are wanting, even in many of the best of hotels. Have your translations or dictionaries at the ready.
"Good for Peking University"
This is a decent 4 star hotel, with all creature comforts, and very convenient for Peking University Health Sciences campus. You can get CNN news on their bedroom TVs. Internet is good, but don't try using Google, or Google-dependent services such as gmail and Chrome. Firefox is similarly disrupted. Microsoft search engines are OK at the time of writing.
Excellent service, beautifully decorated, very clean, good restaurants in the building,... It is quite far from downtown but the metro station is only two blocks and the metro system is fantastic. I strongly recommend it. Be aware that the pool was not available during the week I was there.
"Comfortable and secure with good service."
My wife and I stayed at the Vision Hotel in July, and despite the heat we had a great holiday in Beijing and the surrounding area. We were surprised by how helpful people were, inside and outside of the hotel, and how willing they were to go out of their way to assist with directions and advice. Please be aware that not everyone, unsurprisingly, has fluent English and communication can be slightly difficult at times. The staff at the hotel were very helpful and we loved the lady head chef in the restaurant who was amazingly hard working and sociable at the same time. Our room was an Executive room on the 21st floor and we had access to the executive lounge. The offering was rather limited in the lounge compared to other international hotels, and "happy hour" food and drink need improvement. The management of the hotel were accommodating, Julie the Assistant Manager was very attentive to our needs. John the Concierge was very helpful, and Richard, the hotel Manager was professional in every respect. The big plus is the university campus surrounding the hotel, with beautiful parks, interesting cafes and a good vibe. When you need a little peace from the busy city this is a good place to go. Use the very cheap subway for a very easy ride to the centre of Beijing, the station is 200 yards from the hotel. Food: Breakfast buffet was fine and the dinner buffet was good with unlimited draught beer and some interesting dishes, both Western and Eastern.
"Decent hotel in university quarter - check out the unlimited local beer"
The downside of this hotel is that it is a long way from anywhere - 45min + ride to the centre or the airport........and that's if the notoriously dense Beijing traffic runs smoothly. On the upside it was comfortable, with spacious rooms and all the facilities you would expect from a good business hotel. Added bonus was the swimming pool - a really good size (though only open from 2pm for some reason, and not usable without a swimming cap......which you can buy for a few RMB). Breakfast had a good variety of fruit (well a wide range of types of melon......though the watermelon was the most flavoursome I have ever tasted) and lots of pastries + Chinese and western cooked breakfast. Top tip - go for the evening buffet at the Oasis Cafe. Food was ok - good range of Chinese main courses + slightly incongruously, a plate of chips and pizza......but key benefit was the serve yourself beer tap where you can get as much of the very passable local brew as you can pour......though if you are as bad at pouring as me you will only get half a glass of beer topped up with froth each time!
