"A solid option in a chaotic city."
The Vivanta President is a decent value option for those wanting to stay in Colaba within walking distance of the area's main tourist attractions. The hotel lobby is clean and modern, and the staff throughout are professional and friendly. However, once you go up into the rooms, it is clear the President is a little dated and it has seen better days. Two call outs: 1) we were there in April 2017 and there was major construction just across the street from the hotel for a new metro line for Mumbai. I don't know how long it will be in construction but it did mean that our sea view room was exposed to early morning construction noise. Not an issue if you can sleep through anything, but if you're a light sleeper like me, you may want to choose a room facing the city instead if construction is still going on when you book. 2) With 287 rooms, the President is a large hotel that could have anywhere between 200 and 550+ guests at any given time depending on occupancy rates, however, there are only 14 sun loungers in the pool area. I call this out because on both days we went to use the pool, all loungers were being used and guests kept coming down and leaving because there was no space for them to enjoy the pool. Some guests even started asking the staff to bring chairs in from the meeting rooms to use by the pool. The staff by the pool did their best to accommodate, but ultimately the area just needs more loungers. Clearly Mumbai isn't a sit by the pool all day destination, but for such a large hotel, if you're going to have a pool, do it right. Although it probably has seen better days and is living in part off of its heyday reputation, overall the President is a solid option for a few days in Mumbai and the staff, cleanliness, and overall comfort make it a place to recommend.
"one of the better options in colaba"
We read a whole bunch of reviews and finally settled on Taj Vivanta President due to location and cleanliness claims. We were a family of 5 and we took 2 interconnected rooms for 3 nights. First of all free parking means Valet will park your car outside the property on public roads and someone in the staff will (hopefully) check on your car from time to time. secondly, there is some construction, but not enough to make your stay miserable. There is some issue with elevators, and even the 2 working ones (out of 3) make weird sounds at times one of the rooms smelled at the entry. housekeeping couldn't get rid of smell. The beds need to be replaced. they seem to have lost all firmness. The rooms have confusing light switch boards, straight from some 90s nightmare. breakfast buffet is good, though south indian food (dosa/idly) was abysmal. Stick to Maharashtrian/continental entrees. Malabar restaurant was not great. Must be a non veg thing, veg entrees were mediocre. avoid dry jackfruit veg entree Not easy to hail clean A/C taxis outside. stick to ola/uber quite close to tourist spots bathroom has fixed shower head and no tap. difficult to wash feet after using the loo without getting soaked. We might be too old school for the Taj ;)
Very good hotel and services, but check with them prior to reserving concerning works in the hotel and on the street in front. Had we known, we would have chosen another place as we got little sleep. And were surprised that with all the noise they refused a late check out : it would have been a nice compensation!
construction due to renovation going on ,so during day noisy and uncomfortable breakfast selections limited compared to other equal star hotels location average. 2 elevators out of 3 are running, waiting time is long
"Good option in Cuffe Parade"
Cuffe Parade is expensive for India and even for Mumbai. This hotel is worth the price for a couple. For a family it's get more tricky. The rooms are small and there is no possibility to squeze in a extra bed for children. Vivanta has connecting rooms, which of course doubles the price, but considering the standard of the hotel and the price of hotels in the area this is still a good option. Staff are attentive and friendly - especially at the pool area. Late check-out coold be arranged with no extra charge. Friendly, clean and good security.
