"Nice rooms within walking distance of most Polanco sites"
The lobby has a decent bar, and the rooms are thoughtfully decorated with local touches. Great amenities, and the Jose Andres restaurant gets very good reviews. The cab driver who was waiting to take me to the airport claimed he didn't have change, so either pre-pay at the hotel or make sure you have exact change for the approximately 400 peso fare. It would be great if an expensive place like this would stop charging for wi-fi.
I just finished a 9-day stay at W Mexico City and couldn't be more impressed. While the ultra-modern decor might not be for everyone, the bed was sumptuous, the room was well-stocked in amenities and minibar offerings, and the staff were uniformly helpful - -especially the "whatever/wherever" desk which went above and beyond multiple times. The location is excellent, especially for a first-time visitor - -very safe and lovely for walks to musems and restaurants. There are "taxis" --really, private cars -- available outside the hotel at all hours, and rates are quite competitive with street-hail taxis. Highly recommended!
"Very Poorly Managed 'W' Hotel Mexico City"
After the first nite we were upgraded as the hotel was not very crowded during the holiday. However, we met a very resistant housekeeping manager. We were congested and asked for a few boxes of Kleenex. The room had a nice functional shower and tub so we asked for extra body wash for the bath. She came back 15 minutes later with a very long face and gave us ever so rudely one box and one bottle pushing them in our face. Just ghastly rude. We called and requested to management not to allow that lady ever come to our room during this long stay. Over the days ahead there were severe communications problems between guest services, their management and the housekeeping department. Every day there was another shock from them. On the 6th day they were removing the 2nd comforter we had on our bed which was requested because of the December night weather. I asked why are you taking it away and he replied because you have two. After 6 days of having 2 and every other housekeeping leaving two, there was no communication about our room for housekeeping ' It appeared the management in house could not make it happen, although the GM who was away wrote us an email promising we would have everything requested in our room by housekeeping, but that did NOT occur. The breakfast restaurant was freezing cold in the morning. When the assistant manager Tristan was not on there, getting good service and proper food was difficult. For example, the regular coffee was simply black water, no taste. So then order expresso and they say we charge for that. Setup' The menu states French press, so I ordered that, and the waiter said we don't have it. I asked why is it on the menu, he just shrugged his shoulders and walked away. We ordered Chilaquiles. They brought a bowl of nachos first. Then someone else came with the green sauce and poured it over the chips. We asked where is the egg or chicken that is on the menu' Later when the sauce was already cold despite covering it (freezing restaurant) they brought a few tears of chicken pieces but no egg. So that was a total mix-up by them as if they never served the dish before. Everyday it was like this unless Tristan was there. He is really good in hospitality, pleasant to guests and knows his business. When he was not there, the manager Ariel was on. He was one of the most hostile managers we have ever met. We did indeed tell Effram the head chef and perhaps they spoke to him because ON THE LAST DAY he smiled to us. Really amazing here and very puzzling. At first it appeared the management wanted to provide good hospitality but their system of communications and their operations were amazingly porous. One of our days we had an appointment midday to attend, we asked for a taxi. We did not need a hotel car and like any normal hotel we asked the concierge Marco for a regular taxi. About 25 minutes later a small dirty black car, no taxi details on it, pulls up and both Marco and Whatever manager Yoshi said this is your taxi. REALLY '!! we asked is it safe' Yoshi said yes it is a taxi and you can take it. Now e were late and took it. The car smelled horrible, the driver did not drive well, he used his mobile phone for GPS, but still got lost and the charges Yoshi said to us were almost 50% above the regular taxi's. So maybe they have a deal going with a friend, but at a W ! You get this type of so called taxi for W guests' Wow. It was more easy to figure out by meeting with the Director of Operations Yannick because he defended their choice of car rather vehemently. That was pretty much it, we knew there and then why the W Mexico City service and communications were failing, because that is their standard management has set up. When speaking with him there were more laughs instead of serious business to receive our complaint constructively and try to improve their operations. When we do provide feedback we are specific in order for it to be helpful. In this case we probably wasted our efforts. Our room was nice, we had very nice views. But stepping out of our room we never knew what to expect next from hotel staff interactions. It caused us alot of discomfort. We experienced Eduardo in room service to be a very professional member. When still had missing items from housekeeping, we could rely on him. This fellow would come smiling and courteous regardless that Whatever service gave him incorrect information. He would simply ask what did you need and bring it with a smile throughout our stay. Overall, it was rather shocking to receive this type of poor management control at a W hotel. We regretted greatly as it destroyed our past beautiful experiences at wonderful W hotels around the world. After W Mexico City we are quite hesitant to simply choose any W hotel without further investigations. We should be able to trust a 'W' hotel and its management under Starwood/Marriott direction. This 'W' hotel's management has shaken our trust in the brand.
