"Amazing rooms, Perfect location, Poor reception"
It was our second stay at the W. Yes, it's darn expensive, but it is a beautiful property with the typical trendy lobby with beautifully furnished and designed spaces. Both bars are stunning. In cold weather, the direct connection through the basement to the Underground is a huge plus. You can be in the Metro Station in 90 seconds and don't have to bundle up. I am not pleased with the front desk staff at all. They were somewhat pleasant but cold and not accommodating. For a 4 night stay in a $450 per night room we had requested a noon check-in online and weeks before. At the desk around 11:30 we were told they would call us when the room was ready but that the official check-in time was 3:00. So we left and had lunch and enjoyed the city for a while, returning at 3:00. We were told that they were just doing some "final inspections" on the room. We waited and waited and finally an hour later, after helping in many other people, I approached the desk and was ready to ask for the manager, but the lady immediately began preparing our keys and said OK the room is ready. No apologies. OK fine. But today on our last day I asked if we could check out at 1 instead of 12:00 and I was flatly told no, that would not be possible. Sorry, but that's just BS and I really don't appreciate the unwillingness to throw us a small bone at this point. Also, be aware: apparently Montréal during the off season (we're here in late October) is very dead, especially on Sundays and weeknights. Neither Hotel bar was even open last night. Having been here in the summer where everything is throbbing at night it was a bit of a let-down.
Staying at the hotel and unless we ordered a drink in our room they were unable to serve us anywhere because the various bars and lounges were either full, closed, no staff or unable to serve and that area...might be just a Montreal W service thing but still makes it overpriced and overhyped as a hotel...
"Good hotel but missing the W factor!"
Stayed at the hotel for 3 nights for business. The hotel itself is nice and clean located close to anything you might need. The door staff is friendly as well as the front des staff. The rooms are spacious, modern and offer extra amenities which is nice. I just thought it missed the W factor, no smell or music in the rooms which was disappointing. Housekeeping was lovely. All their attendants were polite and did an very good job in the room. My biggest disappointment was the food in the restaurant. Breakfast was way overpriced and didn't look any better than what I would find in a corner store. The server was rude and did not interact with the guests at all. Dinner was blah, again nothing amazing. Lunch was pleasant and the service was lovely. Will visit again but please make this an awesome W experience!
I rarely write a positive review but our stay at the W Montreal was way too fantastic to ignore. We booked a Fantastic room and were completely happy with it. The room is a corner suite facing Victoria Square park. It is exactly the same as the photographs from the hotel web site. It is new, clean, modern, and roomy. Closet space with slippers and bath ropes are provided. The bath essentials are high quality. A Bose Bluetooth SLIII speaker is on the nightstand for you to enjoy music with quality sound. There is no coffee maker in the room, but by request, a Nespresso machine with all coffee items will be delivered. Housekeeping is consistent and well done. Room service menu has many selection and is excellent and quick. The entire staff (reception, valet, restaurant) is friendly and helpful. Everyone speaks English by default. The bars were quiet since it was during the weekdays. Great location since the metro and access to underground city are right in front of the hotel. No self park option and valet costs $35/day. For our 15 yr anniversary, a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries along with a note from the concierge were in the room when we arrived. The facility and service are definitely of high end luxury with a modern touch that caters to young professionals who embrace technology and openness. Travelers who are conservative and older may not fit in with the theme. This hotel absolutely deserves a higher than 4 star rating and with this stay, W will be our future preferred hotel wherever we travel.
