"Good value for New York City but a bit outdated"
We chose this hotel primarily because of a last minute change in our itinerary - they had an opening and the price was within reason. I've stayed in other W Hotels and the first thing that struck me was how bad the outside looked. It looked worn out and in need of a good cleaning. A couple of lights were out in the W on the outside which for an upscale hotel is something you should never see. The doormen were so nice and accommodating - of course everything comes with a price but they were great. The lobby - which also serves as a nightclub in the evening, was fine during the day but don't try getting help after 9 pm because it's full of people and none of them there to help you unless you are buying a drink. Thankfully we didn't need much help at night but I did find that lobby distracting. Would much rather have stayed in a place where I could have a semi-quiet drink - instead, it was full of major loud party goers. The rooms are on the small side but definitely fine for the 3 of us staying there. We had a nice view from our room as well! The bed was comfortable, but bedding needs a bit of updating. All of the staff were very nice and overall it was a great stay - I would stay again.
"perfect hotel for young couple"
We decided on this hotel for a few reasons. We wanted a city view, to be close to the theater district (we were seeing a show) and at a decent price. We were able to get a great deal with our AAA discount for the ultra cool corner room (which has 2 windows - a time square & broadway view). A friend of mine has stayed at the W before and he recommended it, so with that plus the price and city view room…it was a done deal. We arrived earlier than check in and they held our bags for us and took my number to give me a call when the room was ready, which they did. I have read some reviews that complained about having to go to the 7th floor for check in - I didn't think that was a big deal at all. The hotel is very modern and has a lounge like feel to it. The bar is impressive. I also highly recommend the martinis! The hallways are dark with minimal mood lighting but I really liked the whole vibe it gave off. When we arrived to our room the first thing I noticed was the smell. It smelled so good!, it was very clean but could have probably used a deep cleaning, as there was a clothing tag under the bed and a small dark spot on the corner of the sink, but still very clean. The room was a little small I guess but it was pretty much what I imagined and I didn't mind it. If you're a family of 3+ though I would recommend you get the suite for the added space. The hotel was perfect for us, a young couple, but I could see how a family with kids or older couple might have some complaints regarding the lighting and general aesthetic. They have a cute little chair right by the window to enjoy the view and man the broadway view was absolutely stunning. We were on the 36th floor. We didn't have that great of a view out of our times square window, however only because we had the top of a billboard sort of in the way, also the desk was in front of that window as well making it hard to look down. We went down to the front desk to ask about possibly switching or upgrading our room but they had no other availability so they gave us a few drink vouchers to make up for it. The people who worked outside had some very good recommendations for breakfast the next day and even asked how it was when we got back. The customer service was very nice and very accommodating. We would definitely stay here again.
"Not quite what I expected"
The staff was very friendly and helpful from the front desk to housekeeping and the concierge, Spencer, was terrific at giving us advice regarding restaurants, clubs, and transportation. The rooms are clean and decorated in modern motif. The reason I can't go higher on the rating is that the rooms and hallways are not well lit, you have to ask for a coffee machine and a second chair, and the music in the lobby bar is so loud, it is difficult to converse with front desk or concierge staff.
"Great rate. Good service "
I chose this property mostly based on rate, which was surprising low (for nyc). I love W Hotels because of their "fashion forward" look and cool vibe. I had forgotten how dark they are, however. Maybe because I am a few years older than the last time I stayed in the property but it was almost too dark to read my bill at the bar , which is in the lobby. The hotel has n coffee makers in the room or anything in the lobby except water. You will need to go across the street to Starbucks which I didn't mind but is a bit different when it's very cold and you need coffee and it's 2 elevator rides away too. These are nits though and overall it's a nice place to stay and in Times Square where you can escape the craziness. The rooms are dark which is great for sleeping and the Westin beds are awesome.
"Not that great"
We found the W not up to our standards. The room was out of date, not that clean, dark and lacking plugs. There was no coffee pot and maid did not clean the room properly during our stay. The staff was not overly friendly, and upon checkout we were not asked about our stay. We would not stay at this hotel again.
