"Above and beyond!"
I booked this hotel using my points for my brother and sister-in-law's anniversary. I did let the hotel know this, but I didn't make any special requests. On their own, the hotel upgraded them to a suite AND delivered champagne and strawberries to their room! It was so kind and thoughtful. My family was over the moon! They have a magical stay and I appreciate so much these no-so-small touches the hotel provided on their own. Such lovely people at a gorgeous property!
"Visitng DC For the First Time...'"
As a first time visitor to DC I don't think I could have chosen a better hotel than this one. Literally, the White House is right across the street. And if you have any interest in seeing the new National Museum of African-American History and Culture it is only a two block walk away. (I was able to get a same day pass by getting there at 8AM and waiting in a loooooong line for about one hour. It was worth it!) Lots of shopping is available nearby (Macy's, Marshalls, TJ Maxx) and if you want to hear some live music you could try the Hamilton, since it's a mere one block away from the hotel. I signed up for a DC All In One (National Mall & Tidal Basin) walking tour with Free Tours By Foot. It was a four hour tour that covered everything from the Washington Monument and the Vietnam Memorial to the MLK Memorial. To meet my tour guide I had to go to the s/w corner of 15th St & Constitution Avenue....two blocks from the hotel! For everything I wanted to do in DC--walk, explore, be a tourist--this hotel served the purpose very well.
Great location - very close to White House and metro. Front desk, housekeeping and concierge outstanding. I didn't give a five because the rooms are very small and not very sound proof. It is nice to have a refrigerator in room but it is filled with items to purchase. There is a Keurig and coffee available, but only if you request it. Location, staff and beauty of hotel make up for inconveniences.
"Reserve it on a discount or deal"
I heard the buzz about the W and I was excited. It is extremely visually pleasing. The air conditioning was great and sights and sounds great. The room we got for 2 people had a small mattress. Otherwise the room was gorgeous. I loved the products from bliss spa and the shower gel was perfect. Loved the way it smelled. The linens were quality and plenty of towels. The vanity is perfect for us chicks who do makeup as it is not inside the bathroom. The rooms are stocked with plenty of treats for purchase which are quality and good variety. The staff was on point. There was a wedding the night we were there. Some of the club upstairs was roped off but we could still find room to squeeze in and get to enjoy the roof top bar with open air views of the Whitehouse and Washington monument. Dj was on point. Lots of people in the bar and club and all are friendly. We also went into the enclosed club and it was equally fun. Go there for fun but go on a discount. The room is smaller than I hoped but it was still worth the extra costs.
"Some good some bad"
The rooms here are very clean and modern, but tiny and poorly laid out. As with most W hotels, know what to expect in terms of style. Service at the front desk and valet parking was superb, but their restaurant, Pinea, left a lot to be desired. Note, we only had breakfast there, 2 times, and both were disappointing. We ordered the American breakfast both times, over easy eggs, which were greasy and undercooked. The next morning, we ordered over medium, and they came out greasy and undercooked again. The waitress service was poor, and we waited nearly 45 minutes for our food on the second day. Two tables arrived after us and were served before us. When I signaled the waitress, she bailed out and sent another waitress over. Apparently they lost/forgot or ate our order. Not an apology for the delay, just a few pastries to hold us over, without even a hint that they realized they blew it. Very disappointing breakfast wait staff. We did order room service. It was punctual, hot, and very tasty. Wings, fries, fruit and coffee. The phones in the room did not work, but I suspect that the previous guest took the rechargeable batteries out of the phones, so no fault of the hotel. The check in desk was very noisy and it was difficult to hear the desk agent. She was nice, but the process left something to be desired. At over $350 per night, I expected much more.
