"Not a 4 star hotel"
We Booked to stay here for a reunion and planned to stay 2 extra nights after that. Our room for the first night was old and tired. The flush didn't work very well. The bath water didn't drain away and the room was hot, when we opened the window there was a large air conditioning unit on the roof outside which sounded like a jet engine. At 5.00am I went down to reception and asked to move, they found us another room which was better but after a sleepless night it was all a bit much, no apology forthcoming. Breakfast was fine, the reunion meal we had in the evening was mainly inedible, the main course looked and tasted awful and was left, the dessert served was not what we ordered. This hotel has no lounge area to sit in, it is tired and in need of updating. Our last morning there we went to breakfast and unfortunately there was a large group of young women who had been celebrating a birthday who thought it was quite acceptable to come to breakfast in their nightwear. They had obviously just left their beds and we were treated to the horrible sight of open dressing gowns and far too much flesh! We subsequently asked if there was a dress code and had a letter telling us that as far as the hotel was concerned their dress was appropriate for breakfast in the dining room ! We were not the only guests to feel offended by this so we will avoid staying in Marriott Hotels in future.
"Take to the Sky "
We booked this Hotel because I bought my husband a Red letter day with Virgin a champagne Hot Air Balloon ride . And this Was the ideal Venue as it went up from the Race course at 6am on the sat am , the Reception was lovely and the manager spoke to us ,he seemed lovely and very proud of his job and hotel staff. We booked into our superior Double Room , which was a good size but old fashioned, but with a great view of the course. We had room service which was ok ! Sadly the balloon ride was cancelled due to bad weather. Breakfast was again ok , but not great cooked was only warm and more could have been done to improve service. But we had a lovely time in York ( as always) it's a Shame this lovely hotel has not been done up from top to bottom but when it does we will be back .
"Met up for an RAF Reunion"
We had a lovely large room, with two double beds. The window was small though, so not too much natural light coming in. The bathroom was also large, and the shower was in the bath. The bathroom was in need of updating, with a cracked sink, and no heating! Everywhere was very clean. Dinner in the hotel was not the best, and drinks are very expensive! On check out we were charged an extra £50, for a dinner we didn't have, which we didn't spot straight away. When we queried it, they said that we do that automatically! As far as we could ascertain, they had done that to others too! Staff at the hotel were, on the whole, helpful, and service was good. The hotel is located facing the race course, and is in a good position for getting the bus into the city centre. Parking at the hotel is free of charge.
"Setting is an oasis."
Excited to share this venue with the world. Charming, charming, charming. Compared to my room in Glasgow a month ago this was the royal treatment. Two entrances to the suite it was so large! Bedroom area with bathroom adjoining, dressing area, and an office/living room! Loved the squeaky floors, but the views overlooking the gardens and the racecourse were stunning in spring. Couldn't have asked for more accommodating and friendly staff - outstanding. Many who attended my conference stayed in the city center but I feel privileged to have chosen a hotel near the conference location. A lovely walk both ways to and from the racecourse. Watching people play and romp with their dogs in the field all during the day. Delightful. And a simple taxi ride into town for dinners and separate meetings at Grays Court.Only fault I have is that it was very warm. I couldn't figure out the temperature controls - but I didn't ask either! The weather was stunning at sunny and 20C.
