"Excellent staff and facilities"
All rooms were clean, well maintained and comfortable. The conference suite on the Mezzanine floor were parent for our needs. The food was good but not the best aspect of y stay. The staff were all quick to respond to requests
"Falls short of expectations in many ways"
Lets hit the road running. There was a skid mark on the toilet pan when I arrived - I can live with that but it isn't what you expect at the price... The air-con / heating in the room when set at 23 degrees C blew chilly draughts at me so I switched it off. You hear every metro train as a rumble for a few seconds every five minutes (both in the ground floor conference room and my first floor bedroom. The TV was slow to change channels and it had poor signal on channel 4 one day and BBC1 the next. The messy curtains hang on the floor. The decaff tea (special request on my booking was there to start with but ran out before the end of a 48 hour conference. The hotel could not cope with the breakfast bulge 45 minutes before the first talk - claim to cater for conferences several times the size of ours, we did not have exclusivity. They were trying to walk each person to a table rather than roping off a section for the conference and leaving us to seat ourselves as we might choose. Many of the breakfast items ran out on each of the two days - from muesli to fried eggs, black pudding to sliced bread. I waited for black pudding until my scrambled eggs and cumberland sausage (really a miniature shadow of a cumberland) were cold. Conference dinner was very dull. Mozzarella salad was a handful of rocket, a few grilled half cherry tomatoes and 4 small balls of mozzarella with no dressing. Salmon looked like a Lidl shrink wrapped portion fried and dried on top, sat on 3 green beans with 2 inch long centimeter diameter carrots - I suppose that is meant to be my five a day! The most disappointing was the lemon posset dessert. I am know for my tendency to make food disappear so when i leave half my dessert there is something wrong. This was too sweet, barely lemony and too cooked and set. It seemed a bit like lemon curd. Even the shortcake biscuit was too sweet - the only flavour that presented itsefl was sugar. I must, however, say that they had made a nice raspberry jus or coulis for on top. That and the quarter strawberry i could not fault. The leisure centre next. It was one of those designed for 10 people in a hotel of hundreds of rooms. the 10 metre pool was big enough for 3 to be cosy, 4 a crowd. It was too hot for any serious work. It was black tiled so sighting the end for a turn was tricky to start with. Changing rooms were a masterpiece of architectural stupidity giving so much space to lobbies, toilets and showers that the actual changing space was minimal.
"Lovely hotel. Great food and friendly staff"
I checked in on a Thursday afternoon. The girl on reception was friendly and welcoming. The room was on the 2nd floor. I had a view of the train station but this was not problem to me. The bathroom and bedroom was lovely. Very spacious and big comfortable bed. There was an ironing board, iron and hairdryer in the wardrobe. They also supplied 2 dressing gowns. There was an extensive mini bar in the room. I ordered room service. I went for the burger and this was delicious. I have attached the menus to my review. I slept very well and went down from breakfast at 7am. The staff were attentive. The buffet selection was good and you also get to choose form a separate menu if you prefer. Check out process was also easy and straightforward. I would definitely stay here again.
Let down by breakfast. Queue to be allocated a table. Queue to help yourself. Make your own toast. Mug and spoon for tea or coffee, no saucer. Tea is a bag in a mug of hot water. Nowhere to put the used spoon. Nowhere to put the empty sugar packs or butter wraps. Frankly no better and in fact worse than some Premier Inns. Not good enough.
This was an excellent venue. Recently refurbished unless I am mistaken. Beds were excellent and for once so were the pillows. Staff were attentive and considering the numbers were high I thought the breakfasts were good.
