"Strongly recommend "
Visited Ravenala for just 7 nights and from start to finish the experience and customer service was the best we've ever received! The lobby and bar staff were exceptional, especially Menon and co. They couldn't do enough for us. My only gripe was the taxi service being far too overpriced but unless you're willing to wing it this is the only option to explore. The setting is simply stunning and the resort is beautifully designed, cared for and presented. Our favourite restaurants were Madame Ming and A Tavola but the buffet was always really tasty as well! Would 100% recommend a stay here. Wish we could come every year! Thanks again everybody Hannah & Riccardo
"A mixed bag"
As I start writing this review, I am still unsure of what score the Ravenela should receive. I wanted to like this hotel so much, but unfortunately it gets some of the basics wrong which had a detrimental impact on my 9 night stay. Initial impressions were good. The entrance is very nice with a rustic feel to it. Check in was very efficient, although we arrived in a private transfer so we were the only people checking in at that time. We were promptly escorted to our room in the adults only section with some limited information about the hotel on the way, although they were unable to offer a map of the resort which we found a bit odd. We did find that there was a distinct lack of information generally at the hotel. For example, it was not until day 6 of 10 that we were told that as we were staying in the adults only section, we also had reserved loungers on the adult only part of the beach, and even this was an accident as we had temporarily rested a bag on a lounger which wasn’t ours! Upon returning to the room, I could not find any indication that we had one of these loungers reserved. I’m not entirely sure how the hotel expected us to know about these loungers' This trend of poor communication happened repeatedly during the course of the hotel. Any call to reception with the simplest of questions would result in being told that we’d get a call back with an answer which we inevitably didn’t receive until we chased. First impressions of the room were also good, but make no mistake, these are not suites despite what the literature says. There is no separate seating area, or even seating for two in the room. However, as we started to settle in, the problems became evident. One of the big issues was the lack of storage space. We had a rail with 10 hangers and two very small shelves. Considering the size of the room, I found this bizarre. It ultimately means that you must live out of a suitcase if you are planning a stay any longer than a couple of nights and the room constantly feels messy as you cannot put things away. The bathroom was large, but very tired. Many of the tiles were old, cracked and had lifted from the adhesive with mould growing underneath resulting in a persistent musky smell in the room. The balcony was a decent size, but unusable due to bird faeces. Initially, we complained to the cleaner and the floor was mopped on that day, but it was not touched again. We subsequently complained to reception. After the first call being ignored, we eventually had a team of people sent over to clean and an apology from the hotel. Great. However, even after that, the balcony wasn’t cleaned again during our stay. This was particularly evident by the large bird dropping which appeared on our table the day after the team had left and was not cleaned at all. By this point, we had given up. Generally, the room cleaning was lackluster and the room more akin to a low level 3 star hotel. One big advantage is the very good wifi, even at the beach. However, we could only connect two devices which was a bit poor. Also, the code we initially revived was only for 7 days. When we asked for another, we given codes for 21 days' Why we didn't just get the amount of time to match our stay is beyond me. The common areas of the resort were all very well presented and the evening entertainment was good. Possibly my favourite of any hotel I have ever stayed at. The exception to this was the music at the beach bar which consisted of approximately 8 tracks on constant repeat. After a week, I began to feel like Darryl Dixon in the infamous season 7 Walking Dead scene when he was incarcerated! I asked if there was anything else they could play, to which the barman laughed and walked off! Another thing that becomes apparent when in the common areas is that the hotel seems to appeal to families and has a large number of children running around. This is at contradiction with the some of the ‘adults only’ section marketing. Essentially means you only have a stretch of beach during the day which is adults only, and the limes restaurant (little use if you are not a fan of average sushi). The pool area is large, but again, overrun with children. Whilst I generally don’t have any issue with children, it does mean that as a childless guest, you feel there is little opportunity to chill in a pool, considering there is little opportunity to do the same in the sea. Considering there are three pools, one should be made adult only if they want to sell adult only rooms. The beach was OK, but the sun loungers were so close together (not in the adult section) that there is absolutely no privacy. You can barely walk through them. The sea was not particularly clear at any point, but this may be due to cyclone Enawo which was passing by during our stay. In any event, the area cordoned for swimming was so small, I could barely get far enough out for the water to pass my waist. Any further out, and you ran the risk of getting hit by a boat. As a diver, I was keen to take advantage of the free snorkeling offered by the hotel and hopefully have a couple of dives during my stay. However, the first snorkeling excursion quickly revealed that the coral was bleached with very little sea life remaining. Not the hotel’s fault, but certainly of note if you hope to dive whilst there. Needless to say, I decided to save my money and skip the dives. However, a big plus with this hotel is the watersports. There is free kayaking and water-skiing which is very good. A point of note with regards to the beach are the hawkers. Initially, we were told that the beach was private and the security guards posted at the end seemed to support that. Early in our stay, we were approached by somebody claiming to work with the hotel with the security guard nearby. We placed a deposit for two excursions, only one of which took place. When we raised this with the hotel, we were told that the individuals had no relationship with them and all affiliated staff wore name badges. Not only is this not true (the dive center staff didn’t have any name badges), this information was of little use after the event. We were also told that it was a very common problem that they had and that another family had lost a significant amount of money on the same day. We subsequently found that the neighbouring hotels have clear signs explaining this to guests, but no such luck here. This hotel definitely needs to do something to combat the problem, even if that is providing information to guests. We gave a statement to the hotel security and the police and were told by the hotel that we would be contacted soon after. Unsurprisingly, I have had no contact from anybody since my departure. The food and drinks are extremely varied. On the one hand, the evening meal at the beach BBQ was one of the worst meals I’ve ever had at an all-inclusive hotel. On the other, the two meals I had in the Kot Nou restaurant were probably the best I’ve ever had in any all-inclusive resort. Chef Major and his team definitely deserves a shout out due to his fantastic hospitality. The service in the restaurants was also haphazard. There seems to be a policy of not clearing any tables until they were needed which inevitably left people standing around waiting for a seat. Drinks also took a while to receive. Having watched the staff, there appears to be nobody is given a section to manage and instead all the restaurant staff end up running around aimlessly. There is definitely more training required. The same variance could also be said for the drinks. You could order a cocktail, enjoy it, order the same again with the next being undrinkable due to it being made by somebody different. It never fails to amaze me why many all-inclusive hotels fail to standardise cocktails and alcohol measures as getting them wrong caused so much waste. It was much safer to stick to the local beer which was actually quite good. In summary, this hotel has a lot of potential, but there is some more thought needed in the rooms, the information provided and the training of the staff. As it stands, I would recommend this hotel to a young family, but if you are after an adult holiday, look elsewhere.
"So near and yet so far..."
This is a hotel with a lot of potential. Customer care from front of desk staff to Management, is exemplary. The coffee is very good, the waiters always took time to get us our daily latte and cappuccino at breakfast, even though the hotel was at full capacity. When there was an issue with the room on arrival, we were upgraded the next morning and fruit was brought to the room. So why am I giving this an average rating' House keeping need retraining, a system has to be put in place for clearing tables etc, the 3 'Special' restaurants which need to be booked, are merely a partition off the main dining area, always overbooked, and then you find they are half empty! Lime Restaurant which is not in the all inclusive, is however on the beach, relaxing and inexpensive. The Ocean View rooms have their own comfy sunbeds, but only those on the ground floor are in front of the suites. Several of the others have the room numbers ripped off and are squashed up together at the far side of the complex. Some guests were arguing as to which sunbed belonged to whom! Not really what you want on holiday... Another issue are the hotel dogs. They are not strays, but they wander in and around the hotel. They are harmless and friendly, but I think a sign should be put up to that effect, so holidaymakers don't take them for feral strays! Two final points one minor, one not . The daily afternoon tea and cake never varies and is frankly unpalatable. Part of the issue is that this is served on the top floor, where the foyer is. Humidity can be over 80% in this part of the World. It is inconceivable that there no fans on this level. After all, Reception is here as well as the various company reps desks. We did enjoy our stay but this hotel must work much harder at courting return business.
My husband and I stayed a week at the ravenala had a really nice time the hotel was a bit busier than expected and a lot of kids but rooms were nice pool area was lovely, a lot of restaurant choices and overall lovely people. We spend most of our evenings in the beach bar which was run by lovely staff , nice and friendly and always ready to get your next drink. Especially a massive thankyou to Ak shay kudora for making our holiday so much better a overall lovely guy always smiling and joking and amazing at cocktails.
We stayed here for 10 nights in a beachfront room in the adults only wing. the rooms so spacious and very well looked after, on check in we had an issue with the WiFi in our room but this was rectified within minutes of our phone call to reception. Great selection of restaurants to choose from and nicely spread out around the resort, our favourite was Lime, beachfront location with minimal tables, nice and intimate for those wanting to escape. Ragu always looked after us. A special thank you to Priya in the Bistro for always remembering those little extra touches that made our stay so much more special Venkamah was amazing around the pool, very quick service. Im sure it cant be easy working in that heat all day long. All of the staff did an amazing job so a big thank you to you all. I would also mention that this is not a resort you need to get up at 0700 to reserve your sunbeds, the adult section have reserved beds on the beach but aside from that there are plenty throughout the resort. We cant wait to come back.
