"Pictures promised so much more..."
I fear our review will stand out like a sore thumb in comparison to the glowing feedback of so many others, but unfortunately, we left our 2-week break feeling somewhat disappointed. I would like to start this review by stressing that, whilst there were lots of good points which I'll get on to, we felt a little cheated by the online perception of this hotel vs. the reality. Looking back on the photos now on the Ravenala website and especially on the Hayes & Jarvis website with whom we booked, the pictures are quite shockingly different and have clearly used artistic licence to create the ambience and desired luxury-beach vibe that just was not the case… When we first pulled up to the hotel after over 18 hours of travelling, the lobby took our breath away. Staff were attentive and offered flannels and refreshments which were gratefully received. We were then given a brief tour of the main dining areas before being shown to our room, where we slipped on our beachwear as quickly as possible and headed to the beach BBQ for lunch. This was quite an unpleasant and uninspiring first experience and became the first and only time we ate lunch here. Very quickly after arriving, we started to realise that we had been somewhat mis-sold online. Pictures of the beach made it look relatively quiet with only a handful of loungers, white sand and beautiful water. The reality was a small beach completely overloaded with loungers, densely packed in to every available space. The beach was well shaded but was completely overcrowded and the sand was not beautiful and white as the pictures encouraged us to expect, but was instead coarse, dark and full of shells. Perhaps the most disappointing factor of the whole holiday for me was the water which was dark, murky and cold even when sunny. Whatsmore, swimmers were caged in to a relatively small area of the sea (which never got deep enough that you couldn't stand) because outside this area was clearly designated for watersports, with speed boats whipping up and down constantly. Whilst we completely understand the water / sand has (probably') nothing to do with the resort, and that enough sun loungers need to be provided for all the guests, my goodness was it such an utter disappointment. We picked this resort on the basis that it didn't look too busy and too much like a cattle market. For those despairing, I can provide comfort in the fact that there are some stunning beaches just around the corner of the hotel. I highly recommend paying for a taxi to the beach at Mont Choisi which was everything we'd wanted and heard about; white sand and warm beautiful water clear enough to see all the fish around your ankles. A second beach we visited was just around the bay and was in walking distance of the hotel (walk to main road, turn left and follow the road downhill for around 10 minutes until you arrive at the public beach) with again, much nicer sand, water, tropical fish, and lots of rocks for exploring! Moving on from the beach, the hotel was very clean - all the public toilets were constantly being cleaned - and our room (a standard double suite) was absolutely lovely. This was a blessing in disguise as we actually had to spend an awful lot more time in our rooms than we would have liked due to terrible weather for 6 days straight (obviously no one's fault). The bed was enormous and very comfortable, the design of the room was perfectly Instagram-able and the bathroom was large with his & hers sinks, a ‘rainfall’ style shower, bath and separate toilet. The cleaners were also very lovely and attentive. The rooms were a good reflection of the overall look and feel of the hotel; smart and chic, with quirky bean bag beds and swings at the bars. You could tell it was a modern hotel (I believe it’s only around 2/3 years old). Perhaps we will divide a lot of people here with our review of the food and staff as, reading back, these seemed to have received the most accolades. Quite simply, we didn't enjoy the food and did not chose to go back to any of the 7 restaurants, other than the Italian (Atavola). At the Chinese restaurant, the starters were fine but the main courses were the equivalent of an Uncle Ben's microwavable rice dish and the staff were quite rude and inattentive. O, the beach restaurant, was quite terrible (a fish soup that was as salty as the sea water) and we were so rushed - I don't think I've ever eaten a 3-course meal in under an hour before. The Italian and Mauritian restaurants were nice/fine, but nothing to call home about. The buffet was quite comprehensive, with lots of dishes available for breakfast, including freshly cooked omelettes and pancakes, and dinner - we recommend the curries and fresh naan bread. But a lot of dishes were bland, over-cooked or unappetising and eating in the main restaurant area was utter chaos, like eating in a food-court at a shopping mall. The biggest disappointment in terms of food was La Riviera – one of two restaurants not included in the All-Inclusive package - which served us seafood that was so overcooked it was like chewing rubber balls. Our exceptions would be Lime (another surplus restaurant) at which we had a beautiful, delicate 5-course Japanese-style meal, and excellent service. Definitely worth the extra money. Secondly, O restaurant for lunch. Open until 3pm, they serve a delicious club sandwich and pizzas. Although, unfortunately, our experience here was tainted after we returned from a morning trip and rushed to get a quick sandwich before it closed. We turned up at 2.30pm and when we asked if we could still get a table the staff acted as if we were being unreasonable – checking their watches, leaving us standing around whilst they talked in Creole to each other. Eventually we were seated (in the busy restaurant where people were still ordering!) and spent the rest of the meal feeling like admonished school children. The staff were so unwilling to serve us, only brought half our drinks and were distant and uninterested. This was quite late in the holiday and had me so frustrated I nearly went to speak to management. Like another user who’s review I read before writing this, I wish too that we hadn’t been so bloody British and had just moaned a bit more! A final food tip: the main bar serves burgers at lunch time (we found out by accident) and these were yum! We found the staff service was so hit and miss – especially around the pool at which you had to really try and catch someone’s attention for pool-side service. More often than not, staff made no effort to try and understand our orders at the restaurants or bars when they clearly could not understand our English. ‘Rum and ginger ale’ would often turn up as just a glass of ginger ale, a drink with no ice always came completely overflowing with ice. We got sick of trying to correct people and ended up just settling for whatever turned up, whenever it turned up. The drinks left as much to be desired as the food although the local beer is lovely and refreshing. A final note would be that we thoroughly recommend trying some of the activities the hotel have to offer. We had such a fantastic cycling trip to the local botanical gardens which was a highlight of our holiday, and the markets in Port Louis were a great experience! We also hired a guide with our holiday reps (Summertimes) for an 8-hour day trip around the island, experiencing the best that Mauritius has to offer. This was wonderful - there’s so much to see! Whilst I hate to sound so negative, and have hopefully pointed out some of the good as well as the disappointments, we did spend an awful lot of money on this trip and would want others to not be disappointed if they, like us, thought online promised a lot more. Overall the resort was perfectly fine (certainly not 5* luxury standard as so many reviews on here keep claiming) but was pleasant enough. Just not good VFM and a real mixed bag in terms of service.

this hotel caters for the basic needs of the guests, including the good standard of rooms and amenities; large swimming pools and a beach area for sea water activities; the food is also good with a variety on the buffet.
