"Nice place, great location!"
Stayed at the Parks Plaza May 23-26 for a conference. Hotel is in a great location right near Boston Public Garden. Lobby is nice, very lively. I had a king size bed but the room overall was small and bathroom was very small. Wifi was included and I paid a conference rate of $289+ per night (which was cheap compared to prices I saw on the website). I arrived quite early before noon, so I didn't expect my room to be ready. I checked in and was told they would prioritize my room and would phone me when it was ready. I checked back at 1:45pm and still not ready, but was assured I would be called as soon as it was. I had to head to my afternoon conference session which started at 2pm (was disappointed that I wasn't able to freshen up in my room). When my sessions ended at 5:30pm I again went to the desk and my room was ready! Very disappointed that I was not called (as promised, twice). Beds were comfortable. I was going to order room service one night, but holy cow! Limited menu and normal inflated room service prices, however read the fine print, as underneath the menu items it indicates, in very small font, a 7% state tax + 18% surcharge + another amount. Too much! Also, the store in the lobby charges very high prices. I understand that the prices are normally inflated but $4.25+ for a bottle of water or pop is excessive. Thank goodness I quickly found Au Bon Pain down the street - which had great coffee, sandwiches, salads, soups and baked goods.
While it is a grand old building and renovated rooms, there were two problems that causes me to conclude I will look for a different hotel on my next trip to Boston. First, I arrived in late evening and there was only one other party ahead of me at check-in and more than one clerk at the front desk, it still took approximately 25 minutes to get a room. While I was relieved to finally get a room, it was about the size of a large walk-in closet and the bathroom the size of a closet. Historic building and a great location, but a real pain.
Stayed here for 4 nights at the end of May. Encountered one problem after another. One of the keys didn't work, so we had to exchange it twice. AC didn't work, had to call someone to fix it on the first night. A cot that was requested was broken both times, so we ended up using a cot that had a wheel falling off. There was no mattress pad on the cots, just a fitted sheet directly on a waterproof mattress. The mattress also had a huge indentation in the middle of it. Noise levels are awful from other rooms because there is no sound insulation. Rooms themselves are tiny, and most things there are clearly falling apart. The location is great, but for the rates that they charge, we did not expect the result lace to be such a mess: basically, at a level of a cheap motel.
I enjoyed my stay. Everyone was polite and very helpful. The rooms were spotless but small. It was a little hard getting ready in the morning with the small counter space in the bathroom. However, the bed was so comfortable that I slept better than I have in years. Overall, my stay was great and I would stay again if I'm ever in the area.
This hotel is centrally located, clean and well maintained. It has a great style, friendly staff and I would stay there again. But the food was ordinary, the check in/out was very slow and one bell boy unpleasant.
