"Could be fabulous"
A lovely spot but the entrance road to it is very poor and scruffy. You have to park away from the hotel and walk up to its non decrpit entrance. Staff are friendly, rooms are spacious and well equipped. Lovely grounds poor signage can leave you wandering around . Nothing feels really joined up ! Food was Ok and breakfast a bit canteen like. Pool and facilities are excellent. I don't play golf and visited for a 2 day conference
"Looking very worn - maybe its forgotten that its primarily a golf resort'"
Seven golfers, mixed group, 5 nights, 2 rounds on each course. Let's start with the positives. Nice welcome, good size room, clean and well serviced. Excellent concierge/front desk service. Good breakfast buffet selection. Efficient caddy master support, helpful proshop staff. Lovely old courtyard area with excellent cocktails service in the 'night bar'/sunset bar. Very nice indoor pool/hydrotherapy layout. Attractive ourdoor pool and extensive pretty gardens. BUT....its a golf resort and its not being cared for anywhere close to well enough out on the courses. Both have excellent design layouts. The Links especially has lots of really interesting and memorable holes. But if you've got a course which is littered with many huge bunkers you have to ensure there is enough sand in them! Many were virtually bare, with no sand running up to 360 degree vertical lips, stones galore (and even the odd broken bolt to contend with. Such a shame. The Links fairways too (and some tees) were neglected with a quiet significant rabbit damage. The Parkland course was mainly in better condition and the greens putted better. But large areas of fairways had been infested with weed and coarse grasses. The fine dining restaurant was closed throughout our stay, so we ate out after the first night. The Clubhouse restaurant was poor, with poor service, even surly on occasion. The buffet at lunch was fine, but the salads from the a la carte menu were atrocious. Overall the review has to be decided by the quality of the golf offering...and that's only 3 star. It really needs more resource allocated and significant refurbishment on both courses. I hope it gets it....SOON.
We stayed at Donnafugata as the first part of a two destination trip with Verdura. The resort is undoubtedly very pretty, with a lovely central square with bars either side. The main restaurant had excellent food, pricey but as the £ has slumped against the Euro it is to be expected. The staff were very friendly. However, there were several issue with the resort. First, was our room with a bed like concrete to sleep on. Despite complaints over several days and many failed attempts to add toppers, the bed remained very uncomfortable and the lack of sleep affected our enjoyment of our stay. We finally gave up trying to get the bed softer when quite comically, housekeeping put a set of pillows underneath the top sheet! This made the bed about a foot higher than it would normally have been and absolutely impossible to sleep on - this is a five star resort, remember!! Considering that the property appeared to us to be barely half full during our stay, it was very odd that at no point were we offered a bed in another room to try. Our private terrace was also a mess, constantly covered in cigarette butts blown across from our neighbours' room. The smokers left half way through our stay, but their full ashtray of butts remained for the remainder of our stay. Sadly, there was also little point actually having a terrace, as the sun could not be seen from it after 9:00 in the morning. The next issue was the state of the golf courses. Both were in very poor condition, the Parkland especially had dreadful fairways full of weeds and ant hills. The Links course was slightly better, but throughout our stay we did not see any greens staff working on the course. When we asked in the pro shop about the condition of the courses the director of golf did not even bother to come out of his office to talk to us. Is this five start service' Our conclusion that the resort is struggling financially is based on the lack of staff (both on the course and manning the bars), the lack of clientele in the property, and the final clincher was when one of the senior staff heard that we were moving on to Verdura he handed us a business card to pass on!!! Despite being situated in a nice quiet location, we will not be returning to Donnafugata. Verdura has probably taken much of the golf business away from this resort, and for very good reason as it is a far better resort. For golfers looking for luxury and good quality golf courses Donnafugata could not be considered in the same class as Verdura.
"Comfortable place to stay and to play golf"
The hotel was very welcoming and the staff were charming. Rooms were comfortable although there was some bad scratching on the floor. Facilities were first class. The golf courses were very nice and challenging although the bunkers had suffered in the rain. The hotel was well placed for Montalbano fans
"Guest Experience with Valentina"
We stayed at the Donnafugata for 3 days and were sorry to leave. It is a lovely resort close not far from many worthwhile places to explore, dine and learn about the culture, the people and history of Sicily. After golf, we toured the nearby towns, went horseback riding in the olive groves above the ocean and met many wonderful natives of the island- we love the people of Sicily. In all of our travels, one person stood out to whom we are very grateful and I feel we would be remiss if we failed to mention her in this review. The guest services representative at the Donnafugata, Valentina, is truly amazing. We are fortunate to travel the world and stay in the nicest resorts and hotels. The staff from the best hotels and resorts cannot compete with the lovely, talented Valentina. Typically, we don't mention individuals, but when you visit Sicily do make a point of seeking her out to organize your visit from the resort. We approached Valentina for assistance planning our time and the travel. The drivers she arranged were top notch. The activities and restaurants (we prefer local spots) were perfect.
