"Nice and friendly hotel"
The hotel is centrally located next to the railway station (practical for Sunday grocery shopping). The staff was friendly and helpful. We did not have to wait for check-in/check-out. Our two rooms were large. They were somewhat old fashioned, but this is a matter of taste. They were kept very clean. The breakfast (buffet) was excellent and in a very pleasant atmosphere. Minor negative points: - the electronic keys are difficult to operate and are so heavy that they must be left at the reception. - our rooms did not have much of a view. - it was not easy to understand the panel for the A/C-heating. - the free wifi does not work for computers, only small devices - but the hotel made an exception here, which was appreciated. More general point: we found the city of Cologne a bit disappointing, especially the general architecture. But once again, a matter of taste.
"An excellent 5 star experience"
My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights and what an amazing experience. The hotel is stunning and the staff very professional. We had a exceptional check in with Pia who was helpful and very friendly. The concierge George was fantastic as were the bar staff. The room we had was large and extremely comfortable, with a free mini bar. Definitely a 5 star experience. Would highly recommend this great hotel for a true 5 star experience. Will be back.
"One of the Really Grand Old Hotels--with all up-to-date amenities"
This hotel is simply beautiful. It is a family owned hotel (for over 100 years). Clearly, everyone working there feels that they are working at a treasure, and treat their guests accordingly. We arrived after an overnight flight at 11 a.m. and were given our room keys immediately. (We did book through AMEX and got both early check in/late check out, breakfast included and an $80 credit.) The hotel has been continually updated, and our room was grand, gorgeous and comfortable. Tim, the front desk manager, was lovely--as were all the staff. We had a fabulous dinner there that night (including the wonderfully prepared white asparagus), and breakfast--with all the German breads, eggs, etc. was equally as good. Cologne is lovely. Can't wait to go back there and stay there again! Wish I could give it more than five stars!
"It's all about the hospitality"
After going through the unpleasant experience of having our rooms oversold at the Hilton Cologne, we were redirected to this property after 10 pm in the evening. My colleague and I had been working nonstop for 4 days straight and we were exhausted. Thank goodness for the professional service we received at the Excelsior! They could sense our demeanor and frustration from being sent over from the Hilton. The staff rose to the occasion and took care of everything in a pleasant manner. Our rooms were in the newer part of the hotel on the second and third floors overlooking the courtyard. The highlights: Piano bar drinks are impeccably created and deliciously refreshing. High tea served overlooking the lobby and Cologne Cathedral Plaza- quality! The toiletries in the rooms - Asprey from London. Bellmen were friendly and very knowledgeable on local attractions. Room service staff and food cart presentation- top! The staff does what they say they will do - in a gracious manner. I do think that there are older rooms that have less than stellar appointments in this property. I would stay away from those rooms.
"What a lovely stay!"
The hotel is located right in front of the Kölner Dom and next to the Kölner main station of the train - so, very central. I had a very nice stay there: The staff was very, very friendly and attentive - something to expect from a 5-star hotel but not something which one encounters in all 5-star hotels. This is what I call customer-oriented! Although a bit old-fashioned from the style and the furnitures (but which, of course, has also its charm) but flawlessly clean and the rooms are quiet. The minibar is included until the first refill which is very nice considering the majority of hotel charges its use. The breakfast was included in my booking which came in the form of a buffet (I turned down the included, individual etagère as I wouldn't have been able to eat everything up). The buffet left no wishes unfulfilled and was simply perfect. They also have a gym room which unfortunately is only open until 22.00h (considering being on business travels incl. work + following business dinner is a bit too early). Two small things I see space for improvement: The WiFi-Login could be easier and the AC was a bit weak (I already turned down as far as possible which was still too warm). Overall: I had a fantastic stay and enjoyed an outstanding service.
