"Some good, some bad."
Oh, dear. Gran Porto is in need of some serious attention. The front desk is a mess. We reserved an oceanfront room w 2 beds. Had to argue w manager and managed to get roll away bed in room. Ridiculous. This place is in the midst of a major renovation. Should be closed during this time. The banging, the drills, the pounding and the smell of paint, epoxy and glue were so outrageous I couldn't believe what I was experiencing. The beach is non-existent. The erosion is so extensive there are sand bags everywhere. A palm tree actually fell over from the erosion. Bring water shoes if you go. You will tear yourself apart without them. There is always the very small pool, though. The same music plays same songs over and over all day long. Entertainment was awful, too. I feel awful writing this because the staff is so amazing. They are efficient, kind and caring. They are truly happy to help. I feel badly they have to work in this disaster. I hope the new management keeps them all and treats them well. My friend and I book our yearly getaway in March. We, too are in the hospitality industry. I'm sorry to say Gran Porto really needs to get their act together.

"Great serving staff ~ concierge staff need improvement"
We brought a group of 10 family members to stay in four Junior Suite rooms - we reserved 3 rooms with two doubles and one room with a king bed. Upon check-in, we were given a room on the 5th floor (no elevator), above the Italian restaurant with no balcony. We went back to the temporary front desk and said this wouldn't work for us, where we were told there weren't any other Junior suites available with a king bed unless we wanted to upgrade. We figured they would offer us an upgrade free with all of the money we paid for the four rooms - but no, our room upgrade was poolside at an additional $50 a night. We took the upgrade and settled in for our 10 day vacation. During the duration of our stay, we had issues with the AC freezing up 6 of the 9 nights we were there. On several of those nights, when the AC was sprayed to thaw it out, the excess water came through the ceiling in the bathroom, dripped onto the vanity and floor. It was so bad one night, we were temporarily moved to another room for the night. When we spoke with the concierge, twice we were offered a different room (one had two double beds :-( and the other was only available to move into on a day we were out all day on an excursion), and over the course of the last 7 days, we were offered paltry amounts of compensation for our troubles. On the upside - the other three rooms with two double beds were essentially trouble free! Additionally, if you don't think about the troubles we had with the one king room, know that the serving staff at the resort made our stay enjoyable. The buffet was less than great, food wise, but the wait staff were always attentive and friendly. The wait staff around the pool were also extremely friendly and attentive. The wait staff that were exceptional were Pablo, Selema, a gal we called "Maggie" (her name was something like Magalia'), and Jorge in the buffet and Daniel in the Italian restaurant. Lastly - they really need a self serve laundry room!
We have stayed here in the past and we were very happy with the resort. However with the renovations going on the noise in our room is unbearable. I went to complain and they said all they could do is downgrade our room. We are staying in a beach front walkout oneof the highest levels for a room. I have videos of the noise but can't post them on this site.
"A week away from Canada! "
I’m off college for a week and my family decided to make a trip to warm mexico. It was everything I expected and more. Special mention to Cesar from the sports and entertainment team! He is nice charming and really fun, all the time. Playing in the pool and doing activities kept the whole resort entertained despite the weather!
