"Excellent, short stay"
Got the chance for early check-in. The staff is very friendly, The breakfast was very good with good variety and excelent service. Luckily I got a room with balcony which I enjoyed as usual. I always recommend this hotel.
Very nice hotel with a fantastic concierge! Great location, good clean rooms with plenty of space. The restaurant is a cross between art deco and mediterranean..' but nice. Desk staff could be a bit more polite (but this is Amsterdam), the hotel is very dark at night, doesn't seem there is a light bulb with more than 40 watts. Our room faced inward, so the natural light was little also, but we were out all day anyway. Wifi was very good, coffee was very good, martinis were excellent, bar decor a little dated, but it takes you back a little.... Recommend if you get a good deal, have a view and ensure you tip the concierge!
"Brilliant Location, Shame About the Staff"
The location of this hotel is perfect. Away from the hustle and bustle of the red light area, yet so close to everything else. Van Gogh museum, Rijksmuseum and Vondelpark are very close by when walking. Many very good bars and top restaurants are also near by. The room we were allocated was spacious with a fabulous view of the front of the hotel overlooking the fountains. The customer service was quiet terrible. When checking in the receptionist told us if we have any questions to ask the man at the concierge area. This made us feel like we cannot approach the reception desk. I paid the full amount for the hotel when checking in including the €50 deposit using a different card than originally booked with, yet i was charged the 1st nights rate(€300) on the original card as well as paying in full with the different card. I was told that this was a mistake on their behalf and i will be given a full refund. I had to wait a week for this refund. If I had known I will be charged on the original card, I would have paid in full with this one. Room was quiet dusty - I was sneezing a lot. Room is very noisy. When people passing on the hall we felt as if they were in my room. The cleaners woke early me every morning just from being in the hallway and working in different rooms. Bar was closed before 1am on a Saturday night. When entering the bar we were told they were closed despite many people there drinking with full drinks.
"Outrageously priced, room well below expectations"
American hotel Amsterdam Amsterdam is a notoriously expensive city. They are over-touristed and fight saturation unashamedly through buying power. Hence, downtown hotels are quite costly, and when I chose the Hampshire American, which is also a city's historic landmark, I knew it wasn't going to be cheap. However, for almost 600 euros per night (including the ludicrous city tax but excluding breakfast...!), I expected my junior suite to be rather memorable. Even more so as the hotel had taken my money as soon as the reservation had been made (in my case, one solid month in advance!), which is quite unusual: beware! It began well, as it was located on the building's 5th and (almost) top floor. It was the corner suite, overlooking the canal (but not one of the charming ones you see in pictures) and the square below, and when we entered the room, the sleeping part itself was nice and spacious, with a vast king size bed. The "suite" part, however, was disappointing, as it looked more like a large walk-in closet/dressing room (see photos). The triple very narrow window looked cute but let in very little light, all in all, and overall the (so-called) "suite" was rather dark. There was a charming small spiral staircase which is shown on the hotel's official pictures, hopefully leading to some sort of upper living room that would truly have earned the "suite" its name, but disappointingly, once again, that staircase simply did not lead anywhere, but to a blank wall barring the way... Big letdown. Then, there was the bathroom: as shown on the pictures, I have never seen such a small bathroom in my whole life! That is positively ridiculous. The tiles on the wall were damaged (photo), and there was a long dark hair in the bathtub that had escaped the attention of the cleaning staff. The small bin did not work, I had to ask for a replacement. And no brush for the toilet' How hygienic is that' On the plus side, the bed was comfortable, the wifi excellent and the bathroom products good, even though the towels did have that industrial laundry smell I had hoped to avoid in such a luxury-priced establishment. There was nothing interesting about the furniture and fixtures, which were also disappointing, read "mid-range hotel", including the door-less hanging closet (photo) strangely equipped with an ironing board (Dutch custom'), see photos, and the TV hanging askew from a cheap wall mount (photo). The safe was prominently displayed at the foot of the bed, not the prettiest of sights... This was all a bit strange, but certainly not aesthetically in line with the pricing of the room. No bedside tables to speak of, just a space merely large enough to rest a smartphone on and push it off while trying to grab it half asleep... Two small courtesy bottles of water when we arrived... which were never renewed! We were in general not impressed by the service. In summary, we were very disappointed. As it were, the room was not bad but it was definitely not a suite. And given the outrageous price that was charged, the level of quality was most definitely lacking. Unless you manage to get a deal in a completely different price range, we advise fellow travelers to stay away from the Hampshire American Hotel in Amsterdam. There are much better deals around to be found. One final word: it happens more and more often that hotel and restaurant owners and/or managers see fit to respond to reviews posted by their clients. Just remember, when you read those responses, that such owners/managers have a vested interest in selling you their services, where I have no vested interest whatsoever in expressing the personal and objective viewpoints expressed in this review.
"two night stay"
great location, very good staff , especially the bar staff in the bar americain .Room was okay nice large comfy bed . Breakfast is average Few little negative things though 1) you had to be in the bath to turn on the taps due to the large one piece shower screen 2) Not enough tea and milk in the room 3) Came back to the room at 4 pm to find the room had not be made up not good after being out walking 7 hours and all you want is a warm drink and a soak in the bath or shower , ended up finding the cleaning lady further down the corridor and she gladly came right away with tea and milk and did offer to make up the room 4) Check in is very late 3 pm (they will take your bags in for you though) Even with the negative points we would stay there again thanks to the staff and the hotel location
