"We will come again"
We decided to stop there on our way to the beach for a quick drink. The waiter was very nice to us despite the umbrella, beach chair and baby. The drinks came with nibbles and we had a lovely time. We will definitely come back.
"Possibly the worst room for $395"
The problem with these very fancy resort hotels is that if you don't look like a very rich person you get inferior treatment. It didn't matter that we paid a fairly good money, we ended up in quite likely one of the worst rooms of the hotel. Also, booking our room by hotels.com might not have helped. This is a grand old hotel. I'm sure if you manage to land in one of the nice rooms or suites it will be great.
I am astounded how deficient my room is for a hotel which is supposed to be 5 star. The size is very small and the ceilings are quite low, Not at all what you would expect for a grand hotel that was once a palace. The decor is undistinguished and tired, too. The toilet is in a small separate room not next to the sink/shower room, would be too narrow for a fat person, and lacks any fan. I have a waterfront room, quite a few steps up from the standard room, but one can hardly enjoy the view. You see, the windows are like portholes.
The location and history of the Hotel du Palais is a good start in itself. Unlike a lot of older hotels the high standard of service starts with the arrival at the hotel and ease of which your car and bags are whipped away. The staff and the rooms are of the highest standard, the walk down the corridor is like a who's who of guests with their names captured for eternity on the various rooms that they stayed in. The room, while bright and spacious had one of my pet hates, the shower in the bath. The bar staff and drinks selection were excellent and the walks and location from the hotel were invigorating. I tried to book two more nights in July but it has a 5 day minimum stay which is disappointing.
"We only went for a cocktail and it was great"
The hotel is in a superb position above the beach with spectacular views from the extensive gardens and terrace. The cocktails were expensive but accompanied by good quality nibbles and the whole experience was definitely worthwhile. A fantastic location for a sundowner. I would love to return and stay for a special occasion
