"Perfect for purpose"
Hotels in a place like San Diego are an interesting decision. We contemplated the Pendry and some 5 star luxury. But at the end of the day were very glad we plumped for the Kimpton Solamar. We knew that with the traditional SD weather we were NOT going to spend too much time in the hotel anyway, so paying for 5 start appendages seemed silly. The Kimpton delivered exactly what we were seeking. A great room, in a great location, with decent amenities and fabulous staff. Well Done Kimpton Solamar. % great nights. Staff were friendly, room cleaning was prompt and efficient and the room had almost everything you need. I say almost because of my only gripe. The bathroom products (which were brilliant) were in wall mounted dispenser. On day one i assumed the shampoo was empty and complained. I realised later that it was not empty at all - but the push down dispenser nozzle for both shampoo and shower wash were so hideously inefficient that you could expend a million calories pumping them to no avail. That being said. We loved our stay. It is also a really nice touch that between 6 and 10am they have a free coffee station in the lobby. Claudia used to send me down to get her coffee while she plucked up the courage to emerge from bed and get into the shower! I would recommend this to anyone. We didn't do the pool. We didn't eat here either. So no comments on that. but as a nice room in a nice location - absolute winner. Well done again Kimpton Solamar.
Great venue for a party! The food from the hotel was outstanding and the views from the venue were wonderful. Service staff were excellent and the food presentation was well done. We were happy with everything and will make this our new go to venue for hosting events!
"Bait and switch, total deniability and Murphy's law..."
Made reservations for my wife's birthday, and booked the Luna Suite. After doing so, I saw you could have an adjoining suite (I chose the spa suite). The national reservations line said "you have to wait for a week before, and contact the hotel directly". So I did. The hotel said I needed to make an additional reservation for the Spa suite on the national line (not sure why they couldn't do it), so I did. Then called the hotel back. The young lady confirmed that I could get the spa suite connected to the Luna Suite and I was all set. WRONG! I called the day before my arrival and was told "THEY HAD ME IN A SEPARATE ROOM DOWN THE HALL!!"!! WTF'!' I opted for the "early check-in" option that they emailed me, and I accepted. So we drive down early from LA to spend the afternoon in the Gaslamp district. When we arrived, we were told the room was not available, and this was something they could not guarantee'!' So why set the expectation' When we finally did check in and got to the 4th Floor, we were interested in checking out the pool and bar area. The keys did not work. Come to find out, the key system was taking a crap. Eventually, the entire key system went down. They were then offering "one time use keys" for your room. So every time you wanted to go into your room, you had to get a new room key. I went out to the patio, and realized the doors were not locked. When I tried, they would not bolt. And if they did, I could push on them an open them. I asked the front desk, and they told me "oh, they work just fine - they are just tricky is all". When engineering arrived, the guy did something and one door locked. And said the other did too. When I unlocked the door and tried to relock, it would not lock. (oh yeah, they work just fine). I did receive a call from the front desk offering to provide me with the adjoining suite to my room for they night - free of charge. I declined, and prefer just to let my stay here end and go home. WORST $1,000 I HAVE EVER SPENT!!!
"Not the expected quality."
We experienced problems with the bathroom and it wasn't fixed throughout our stay. The décor is nice and cozy and the location is perfect. The staff at the pool bar wasn't very kind, we didn't feel welcome.
"Exceptional Service / Great Location"
We always stay at Kimpton Hotels for their service and unique style. When we do, we always get great service but this time I would say the service we received from Q Martin and the front desk staff was exceptional. We were there for our 25th wedding anniversary and no detail was overlooked. The rooftop bar is amazing (both day and night) and the location of this hotel in the Gas Lamp District is perfect. A short walk to marina and great food. The best part of our stay bar none was the service we received from Q. Great room on the 9th floor. Always enjoy the morning complimentary coffee and hosted wine and beer hour in the evening. I would highly recommend this hotel and can say with confidence, when we return to San Diego, we will look no further than the Solomar. Thank you for such a memorable weekend. Perfect in every way!
