"Our first trip to Scotland"
Great location, situated a block or two from the Royal Mile, and therefore Quiet. Staff is very nice, eager to assist . Fitness room was basic but useable. The Hotel was undergoing renovation, therefore the restaurant services were basic with what seemed to be a reduced menu option. Breakfast was your basic hot/cold choices. Wifi was hit or miss, able to get online in room at times, better access was in the restaurant
This was a great hotel. The buffet breakfast was the best. The staff were fantastic. They went out of there way to help us enjoy our stay in Edinburgh. The location was spot on everything was within walking distance.
"A truly wonderful hotel"
When we, two couples arrived at the hotel we drove down the public alley adjacent to the building. The concierge somehow knew that we were guests of the hotel, came out to our car in the rain and instructed us to leave our vehicle to his care and to proceed into the hotel. Jacob, the concierge had our car valet parked collected our luggage and met us in the hotel. Our rooms were ready early and the very cheerful and polite front desk person provided us with room upgrades. The rooms were large, very well presented and appointed and impeccably clean and tidy. We stayed for three nights in the hotel and every meal that we had at the hotel was delicious and served by very gracious, efficient and cheerful waiting staff. On leaving the hotel our checkout was extended by half an hour in order for us to finish our last tour and when we returned to the hotel the concierge had arranged to have our luggage taken to the car where he personally re-packed the car and frankly did a better job than we had. We have traveled extensively in North America and internationally and this sticks out as one of our most enjoyable hotel stays. It was a great way to complement the beautiful city.
"Level 4 in terms of American Hotel standards"
Hotel #5 on our 15 day tour of Scotland and Ireland. Service was excellent, except they couldn't change our currency which would have been easier for us. We were told to walk down the block to an ATM which was not possible given the early am departure we had. The hotel location is not on the Royal Mile. We had to walk through an alley to the left of the entrance to get to the main action. Would have preferred a hotel closer to the main action of Edinburgh. It was a long walk to the castle. Room was decent sized. Bed comfortable and bathroom good size for hotels we had encountered in Scotland. Water pressure was good and so was hot water availability. Lighting was dim by the bedside. Had to remove the shade in order to read. Breakfast was very good and so was the service personnel at breakfast.
Stayed at the Macdonald holyrood hotel hotel was nice Frank at concierge was very helpful with advice on reserving car parking space a must if you are staying here. Room was very nice bed comfortable bar area was well fitted out with good seating, pool ok steam room out of order but sauna working, we booked bed and breakfast, breakfast was a letdown we ordered the Macdonald breakfast with tea and toast with poached eggs. Waiter delivered coffee not tea breakfast arrives 1 sausage 1 strip of bacon beans potatoe scone and cremated poached egg which we sent back was replaced by a better egg. We had to ask on at least three occasions for cup to put tea in I think having dedicated staff to deal with separate tables would help with the confusion as too many staff dealing with the same table leads to miscommunication. I would stay here again but probably room only as the breakfast is just not worth it.
