The hotel was beautiful, the staff friendly, knowledgeable and friendly. The room was very nice and the pool area was beautiful and the perfect place to spend any part of the day. I am glad we stayed here and will be coming back for sure!Comment of W. Christie , United States the 2016-07-01
A great stay, for a great price. Not the best Fairmont hotel in the world but most definitely the best for the money. Great complimentary shuttle service to the nearby shops and beaches and Santa Ana airport, where you can pick up transfers to Disneyland and further afield.Comment of L. "Terrible experience "
First of all, for what they charge, the rooms are run down, musty, and nothing feels clean. The most annoying thing was the parking, however. You have to valet, which is incredibly inconvenient when you are coming and going for meetings. When I arrived to check in, I told the valet I was only going to be about ten minutes, then had to leave for a dinner meeting. He assured me they would park the car close by. They didn't. Was late for my meeting because I had to wait for 20 minutes while they found my car. The next morning, I waited 25 minutes for them to get it. This was at 8:30 in the morning--when people were lined up to leave for business meetings. I was supposed to stay two nights, but checked out early. The fact that they charge $33/night for this service is just salt in the wound. Switched to the Courtyard in Santa Ana, which is $199/night cheaper and 10x nicer and cleaner. I come to Orange County once a month for work and will NEVER stay at this hotel again.
"Best way to ruin in hotel"
I stayed in this hotel a long time ago and at this time everything was glamourous, trendy, and almost perfect but now it is terrible The building is still in place beautiful but the room - lobby - restaurant have a very poor taste in term of decoration.... and atmosphere The service is so poor, do not ask for a bottle opener, they look as you are coming from another planet Instead of having an armada for taking your car, they should have more service at the front desk and more houssekeepers The breakfeast has no taste and if you want something like toast you have to ask I hope some day the management will realize they have a jewels in their hand so they can restore and create a brand new hotel using the wall......
"Good for airport"
Stayed here for a few nights as part of a conference being held there. Room was clean and well equipped. Restaurant ok. Breakfast ok without being spectacular. Close to the John Wayne Airport but not much else within walking distance. Didn’t get to use the pool area; the one day I was free it was closed for a private party.
I stayed at The Duke for 2 nights for a work trip. I have mixed feelings about this hotel. The staff was amazing. The initial room rate was great, but the taxes and $33/night parking is outrageous. When I got to my room it smelled musty and the air conditioning had a strange humming sound. The pool is small and although it is a nice area, the planes constantly flying overhead make it difficult to relax. I will say that I had the most amazing meal at their restaurant though! If they lowered their fees and updated the rooms, this hotel would be a good choice. As it currently stands I don't know if I would stay here again.
"Renovation Can't Happen Soon Enough"
Unlike many of these reviewers, I didn't have the pleasure of enjoying this hotel when it was a Fairmont. However I can see that the bones of an elegant property remain, it's just the worn out, dated interior and systems that need a reboot. For example, my room had cracked plaster on the ceiling and a musty smell but was generously sized and had a nice view. The carpet, bed, bathroom, and fixtures were all fairly dated and worn. However replacing them with a modern pillow top mattress, fresh carpet, new lounge chair, etc. would really make this an excellent place. The service from the staff was also exceptional - almost to the level of JW Marriott. Every single employee I encountered, either on the phone or in person, was friendly, professional, helpful, sincerely and genuinely pleasant to interact with. In particular, Ascension (waiter at breakfast) was great! The pool is also beautiful and relaxing on an idle afternoon, and the exercise room is generously sized and well-stocked with equipment but was very hot for me (perhaps the A/C wasn't on)' As it is today, I'd give the property a 2/5, and the staff a 4/5 or even 5/5. Overall, I score it a 3/5 - average. Considering that the Irvine Marriott has just been renovated and is often the same price, and there are several other great properties in the area too, I would suggest looking elsewhere until their renovation is complete. The staff told me this was supposed to be mid-2018, but they weren't holding their breath.
