"Great location but few things let it down"
We stayed last week for 4 nights and we found the location to be excellent, bang in between 5th Avenue and Times Square with easy walking access to most places in the city. Checked in to room 511 and although quite dark was big enough for 2 and the bathroom was also fairly big (wetroom). I have given 3 stars for 2 main reasons: 1. Noise - the room was not well noise insulated at all and we found out the hard way on the 2nd night of our stay when we were woken up at 4am by a man running through the 5th floor screaming someone was trying to kill him and he needed help (someone who must have known him came out and turned out he was sleep-walking, but still shook us up a bit). Aside from that incident as it wasnt really the hotels fault he was running around, we heard the bell ringing from the lift every time it reached our floor. The air con was also very noisy even though it was turned off the entire time we were there. 2. Transfer- we payed $60 for a yellow cab from the airport to the hotel. On the return the hotel receptionist said he could have a private taxi ready waiting for us at the hotel when we needed to go for $75 as a flat rate no extras. We agreed to save the hassle of trying to flag one down as the end of the hotels street was blocked off due to an event. When we arrived at the airport the driver demanded $83 and wouldn’t let us out without paying the full amount, we gave up arguing in the end as we didn’t want to miss our flight but the hotel staff provided false information. If we returned to New York I probably wouldn’t chose this hotel again mainly due to the noise levels in the room from the outside corridors and the air conditioning, as well as the misinformation from staff, and choose one of the other hotels in the same area.
"A great experience "
We stayed at the hotel as part of my birthday celebrations and it was great. Good size rooms clean, and fresh linen daily. Staff we're very helpful and nothing was too much bother. Very central for everything you want to see, would definitely visit again. Thanks again too all at the Mansfield
"Central location but the rooms are very dark "
At first I was given room #511 facing a dark light well which was very unappealing. I requested another room facing the street. This was still dark as the black wood blinds would barely move to open position and one fell down trying gently to open. There was no soap or water in the room. The window bench seat cushion was dirty. The heater was very noisy and the mattress was not comfortable making it a difficult sleep. The bathroom only had a tiny sink with next to no room to lay out toiletries. However it is in a central location to 5th Avenue and close proximity to the theater district.
My husband and I took the train into Grand Central Station for my birthday weekend. I turned 55. It is very close to GCS and 5th Ave.on 44th Street. We got there several hours before check in to drop off our backpack. They upgraded our room and let us check in then and there! The room was 1106 which was very roomy and comfortable. The only thing I could say negative was that the room was quite warm for me. The heat was not on that I could see. The windows opened and that helped cool off the room. The bed and pillows were comfortable as was the living room furniture, couch, window seat and chair. There was a desk and chair and a small refrigerator that was nice and cold for our water and lemonade that we purchased a few streets away at Whole Foods. Bryant Park was located by Whole Foods. There is a nice Winter Village thing going on through the holidays with skating, shops and food. We walked to Times Square for a show and dinner. Just up 5th Ave is Rockefeller Center. They just put up the Christmas Tree and are getting ready to put on the lights. Sunday morning we had coffee in the restaurant for $1.99 bottomless. Surfed the internet with the free wifi. They do have a breakfast of cereals, fruit and baked items as well. There is a lovely library area as well. I would stay here again. Very clean and in good repair everywhere we happened to be.
"It’s in the details"
The hotel tries very hard. Service was excellent and everyone was helpful and responsive. Top of the line room was small with no place for folded clothes. Bathroom VERY small. Bath accessories pathetic: one tiny soap, single ply toilet tissue and plastic disposable cups. Continental breakfast was pretty pro forms and presentation was not very attractive.
