"Nice Room but Overpriced"
Its Close to end of Oxford Street, very small reception area, no where to relax and sit except for a very small place. Nice Room, bed was comfy, bathroom adequate with an unusual see through wall that can be made opaque. TV remote was rubbish and the hotel didn't know how to work it. There was no way of putting subtitles on tv and my daughter is deaf. You had to be close to tv for it to work at all. Nice touch from hotel of wine and strawberries for my birthday.. Thank you, but I think for just the room and no breakfast it was very overpriced..Stayed at much better in London for cheaper. Staff are very pleasant. No real faults other than it was too overpriced for what we got.
"Hotel ok - service at breakfast shocking"
As I set out in the title, the hotel is ok with a welcoming and efficient reception. Room was a little tired with smashed mirror and worn headboard. The mattress was also in need of replacing. But the worst was service at breakfast - it'd the worst service I have ever experienced. They could not make it any worse if they tried. Shame as there is potential for a decent hotel very easily.
The rooms are ridiculously small with barely any space to move - we are talking literally a foot between the wall and three sides of the bed; the vacuum cleaner was my steady companion, greeting me from the corner of the corridor every morning; you can hear all the conversations in the adjacent rooms (and presumably they can hear yours as well); there is no bar or restaurant: there is breakfast and a suggestion of room service (I did not take them up on that). I was first offered a room on the ground floor with a window facing an alley where a startled bystander peered straight at me at eye level; and then another with a TV on a 90 degree angle from the bed (itself 30 cms away from said TV). I was given a bath towel with a tear big enough to fit a head through it. I do not understand how this can possibly be a 5-star hotel, and cannot imagine what leads to better reviews - other than perhaps getting upgraded to across the street!

The service is second to none! Everyone from the bell boy to the manager are charming friendly and engaging! We would not consider staying anywhere else partly because of this. It is so rare to get such personal charming service. Secondly the attention to detail is incredible! Many many small touches which make staying here such a relaxed pleasure. The breakfasts have improved significantly recently too...huge range of choice with delicious good quality fresh fruit and excellent espresso. Working in hospitality as we do and running an award winning establishment at Millgate House we feel well placed to assess things... this hotel is top notch! 10/10 again!
"Very poor quality rooms on 2 occasions out of 4 visits"
This hotel lets the Montcalm name down. It charges the same prices per night as the excellent hotels in Shoreditch and Chiswell street. On my first stay I had a basement room which was right next to the entrance the staff use and where they have their smoking breaks. It was noisy and horrible. This time they put me on the top floor in a tiny room with no windows and a strange scent. Also the safe had been removed from the room. I complained and was told they couldn't move me. Would never stay here again
