"Beautiful hotel, authentically decorated and central location"
The Palace Downtown is one of the nicest hotels I have ever stayed in. The exterior and interior decor is beautiful and authentic - you really feel like you're in Dubai, not just in a bland hotel that could be anywhere. I stayed here for my first visit to Dubai and it was the perfect location for exploring the city - you're just a few minutes' walk from Dubai Mall (and the metro) or an easy taxi ride to the city's other sights. The hotel staff are incredibly friendly and will help you out with anything from lending you adapters to helping you organise your transport. I would highly recommend this hotel and will definitely return on my next visit to Dubai!

"Wonderful experience from arrival moment onward"
From the moment of arrival, and continuing throughout our stay, the service was a standard for excellence. Every question we had was answered knowledgeably; my requests to keep medicine frozen and quickly retrievable was immediately and courteously complied with. My request to increase the temperature of the hot water (I like it quite hot) in the room was similarly immediately granted. All in all, a wonderful stay, including the always tasty buffet.
"Nice pool but...."
The staff range from condescending to obsequious, depending on how they perceive you. It felt as if some of those that exhibited good cheer only did so because it was a job requirement and not because they were in anyway naturally inclined to pleasantries. The best thing about The Palace is it's pool. Utterly gorgeous. Like an oasis. It's lined with mature palm trees which provide much needed shade. You can forget that you are in the middle of the city. The air conditioned cabanas are a definite plus. The arba station is there too. The breakfast is not particularly impressive. The concept of gluten free pancakes appeared to be beyond their abilities. The block they put on our credit card took over a week and two phone calls to clear (normally blocks are cleared at check-out). Their 24 hour check-in policy is unique and useful. You can check-in when you like and check out at the same time that you checked in. Location-wise it's siting on the banks of a man-made lake, next to Souk Al Bahar and walking distance from Dubai Mall. It's right opposite the Opera House and the Burj Khalifa. The rooms are clean but the balconies are littered with bird droppings. Speaking of birds, some of them made rather persistent hooting noises early in the morning. Most surprising: The staff seem not to be aware of the offers on their hotel's website and even after they become aware they come across as being somewhat recalcitrant to do as advertised. If you do book a specific package, like we did, my advice is that you print the page from their website that outlines all that you are entitled to each day. You may need to show it to them to counter the disbelief in their eyes. Then you need to exercise the patience of Job to actually get the promised tickets each day of your stay, because it could take the front desk staff up to 45 minutes to figure out what they spent 45 minutes figuring out the previous day, while keeping you standing at the counter in front of them.
"5 star hotel with cheap service"
So I'll start from the beginning... my wife and I arrived at the Hotel on a Sunday night for our honeymoon. When booking a five star hotel you expect everything to be perfect. That was not the case. I personalized our stay requesting a honeymoon to surprise my wife. Nothing was done. No flowers, no nothing. Apparently they switched our room last minute and forgot about the surprise. They tried to do the set up after we were inside the room. not good, the surprise factor was already gone. After a 20hr trip, all I wanted was a bath and change my clothes. The luggage only arrived 50min after we were in the room. What happened' the luggage was also delivered in the wrong room. Lets say we were off not for a good start. Staff was quick in apologizing, they offered us a free meal at Ewaan restaurant. On Wednesday, we went out and arrived at our room around 3am. While taking a shower, water started to over flow. What a mess, water everywhere, our bathroom looked like a river. Again, on a five star hotel. Next morning i took the matter to the manager, Raul. Very courteous, he had someone take a look and fix it. He gave us a free massage and offered a new room, we had 2 days left, so we didn't wanna pack everything and move to a new room. Decided to stay in the same room, since the problem was fixed. On our last day, the shower overflowed... again! Like a river, all the way to the carpet. I talked to another manager, Nagy. Also very polite and courteous, he was already aware of the previous issues. He offered us upgrade on our room, with we took this time. A nice brunch at Ewaan and did not charge us for the last night. The hotel is beautiful, but this series of events made us regret staying there. Ive been in cheap hotels with better service than this. Not worth spending U$600 a night in a million years. Hands up to the staff at Ewaan restaurant. Jose, the manager was awesome, treated us like family. Him and server Dharma were the only thing that made us feel like we really were in a 5 star hotel. They deserve 5 stars. Im sure well never forget the experience, since it was our honeymoon, unfortunately in a negative way.
