Stayed here for a weekend in early May 2017. Location was fabulous to upper east side attractions like the Park and Met. Staff was friendly and courteous. Doormen quickly hailed cabs for us and did not have to wait. Caught the end of a really good Jazz trio at the hotel bar Saturday night. Rooms were up to date and clean considering this was obviously an old building. Pricing about reasonable for NYC hotels. Will stay here again.
"Good hotel but by no means the best"
We stayed at The Surrey Hotel in April 2017 for 6 nights and overall the experience was a positive one. Check in was fairly smooth and the staff on the desk and the door were very friendly and attentive. Our room was a great size with a HUGE bed - had some of the best nights sleep in this bed! The room was spotless and this stayed this way right through our stay - the maids do a great job and one in particular, called Charmaine, was so kind and accommodating with us. The location of the hotel is incredible! Right up in the Upper East Side the hotel is located between Central Park and Madison Avenue. If you're going to New York for high end shopping this is the perfect hotel and I can really recommend starting your day at the top of Madison by the hotel and walking right the way down. So many amazing shops! I also want to give a special mention to Dwaine one of the hotel doormen. His customer service was nothing short of great from the minute we checked in to the minute he got us our cab back to the airport. Fantastic guy with great recommendations of things to do and see! Negatives: - On the day we arrived we mentioned to a member of staff that we were looking forward to having a drink on the hotel rooftop bar to which we were told it was currently closed until early May. This was disappointing as we were unaware of this at the time of booking. - My partner really struggled to pay for this hotel as they don't have chip and pin (yes really in 2017!!). We are British so just swiping our cards often doesn't work. My partner wanted to pay the full amount on arrival but he was told to do it at the end because of the chip & pin issue. Then mid way through the week our key card to our room stopped working. When my partner went to the front desk he was told that it was because we hadn't paid despite us trying to! Very frustrating. A member of staff on the desk ended up swiping his card so many times that they took the full amount of the hotel out of his bank account 3 times!!! and he has only recently received this back with no apology.
entering the lobby with the assistance of the bellman went well and the first impression of the lobby is a beautiful stone mosaic that imitates a carpet inside the door. it's all downhill from there. the hotel was remodeled several years ago in a "Royalton Hotel in the '90's" meets Morocco kind of style. that includes flimsy silly furniture that is wobbly and not terribly functional and a carved wooden cage/closet that encloses the central air conditioning unit. the reviewer who said they suffered with an overheated room was right. the units are too small to cool the rooms adequately as the maintenance staff admitted to me when i complained. that was after they pulled the filter (and tried to hide it from me because it was filthy and collapsed) and changed it which improved cooling modestly. i was still left with a carved wooden screen encrusted in dust and dirt from the filthy air that been blowing through it. the front desk failed to credit my bill with the amex benefits until asked and were unsympathetic about the heat. oh, did i tell you the shower didn't drain and i stood in water and that the manual chains that control shades don't work well and are draped across a wall. at this price forget it, there are better choices. amateur hour here in design and management.
"Great weekend stay"
Perfect location, outstanding staff. After a long day walking nyc it was a pleasure coming back to a beautiful room and outstanding comfortable beds. Look forward to staying here again! This is our new go to hotel in New York.
"Lovely Boutique Hotel"
We had a wonderful time and loved the room and the view. It would have been nice to be able to use the roof deck but the weather didn't cooperate. We had a comfortable bed and a large bathroom. Very high tech with TVs everywhere and the ability to plug in our own music to the sound system. Fitness center was small but well stocked. The restaurant was great. The staff was professional and friendly. Only issue was the internet. It didn't work automatically in our room but they were able to work around it and get us hooked up. Still it did took 2 hours.
