"Don't Stay if You're an SPG Gold Member"
Checked into the hotel today. Decent location, and a decently large room. Also, the concierge is super helpful! CON: We booked and paid for the largest double room, so we weren't able to get an upgrade, which I completely understand. So, we asked if it might be possible to get lounge access (since Gold members get it at other properties). Was told that we couldn't but could pay for access. Pretty darn annoying since we didn't get upgraded, and then were told that we couldn't get lounge access. Next time, either getting a cheaper room or just not staying here. Even the St. Regis in Langkawi gave an upgrade.
"Service level was questionable"
We are living in Shanghai and love the Sunday brunches at a variety of hotels and restaurants. Due to the steep price of the Sunday brunch, we have picked the Westin in the past whenever we have some friends in town or we have a celebration with local friends. We loved the food spread and the attentive service staff. However, last Sunday it was a turn off on all levels. Price is still the same, but the starter seafood section was seldom refilled and the free flow of champagne was more of a "Feel free to beg for a refill" type of situation. As said in the beginning, we don't mind paying such a price but we do then in return also expect a good service level. When we raised our concerns to a western manager at the hotel, it was not really taken seriously (that's at least how we felt). Anyway, we will see and monitor the situation and watch out for news, hope Westin will improve -or better bring it back to previous levels- the Brunch moving forward.
"Great four night stay in Shanghai "
As many others have mentioned one key advantage of this hotel is its location just a 10 minute stroll from the Bund and ideally located for exploring Shanghai's other main attractions, including the various shopping streets and the People's Park and People's Square with the excellent Shanghai museum. But it's other key point is that it is a very comfortable hotel to use as a base from which to explore Shanghai. Our room was located on the 11th floor of the Grand Tower and the double windows provided a view towards the Bund and across the water to the TV Tower. I believe it was one of the standard rooms but even so it was very spacious with a large comfortable king sized bed and a well designed separate bathroom and wardrobe area that could be closed away from the main bedroom and corridor by double sliding doors. The main bathroom sink area contained a large freestanding bath tub and there were separate shower and toilet cubicles. Good use of mirrors and modern led lighting gave the bedroom section a light and airy feel. The public areas are spacious and well designed, especially the ground floor Stage restaurant which houses the breakfast service and evening restaurant. It's worth eating here at least once of an evening and try to get a front facing table from which to watch the changing light display of the illuminated staircase up to the fifth floor. The breakfast service is extensive and make sure you explore properly to find it all, otherwise you may miss the western options at the very back by the tea and coffee section. We found the staff to be helpful and efficient throughout, especially those at the breakfast service with whom we interacted the most. Both the pool and fitness centre on the third floor are of decent size and the free Wi-Fi worked well for those apps you can get to work behind the Great Firewall of China, which fortunately includes Trip Advisor. The only thing we found not to like about the Westin Bund was the price of the food and drinks which were up there with western five star hotel prices. This was especially true of the drinks but fortunately there are plenty of bars and restaurants around where a Tsing Tao can be had at a third of the price of the hotel bar.
"Good location but just fair service"
With the price of this hotel I would expect the service should be much better. No one offer they help to carry your luggage to your room and the check in counter even argue with you your booking was not correct. I told them I booked one king size bed and she instead I book double bed. What is the point' just tell me can I change. She seems not helpful at all.
"Fabulous hotel in a great location."
This hotel was selected for us by our tour operator Viking River Cruises. It’s very well placed for the Bund and just as importantly for my wife, the shops. The hotel staff couldn’t do more for us, the amenities are fabulous and the food was out of this world. I can’t recommend enough.
