"Delivers on many important aspects including Charm"
Stayed here for 2 nights in September. After 32 hour travel time from Sydney to Milan our luggage didn't make the transfer at Helsinki. Then 2.5 hours wasted at Finnair agent lost luggage meant we arrive around 9.45pm exhausted. Leopoldo is not such a bad place to be after the ordeal. You will get good sleep here. Rooms are in keeping with the context. Stayed in Junior Suite with Balcony (Room X or Y, memory now sketchy on which letter after 4 week trip). Great sized room though no separate lounge room. Ensuite shower and separate WC with additional basin facility. Good separate space for luggage (if we had it). Room has a great view but really, you won't use it. Staff in the hotel were very friendly, and we appreciated their Italian skills when dealing with our lost luggage issues. Very good breakfast selection. Facilities were good. Some things to consider: Hotel offers regular transfer service to the CBD lake front. It is an approx. 8 seater, if its full I think you miss out. That is a bit awkward (perhaps hotel may address that in their reply). If you have allergies the hotel tries to accommodate with correct food but may not get it right. In that regard their much vaunted restaurant was an almost complete failure. My wife has gluten, dairy and tomato as allergies. The kitchen seemed to take that as a indication to be complacent rather than a challenge. Main course was bland and lacked all imagination. It was not representative of an establishment of reputation. My meal was left on the table whllst they made an "attempt" to rectify my wife's meal. When asked (why I was asked I don't know) why I wasn't eating I advised I was waiting for my wife to be served her meal as well (bit of a no brainer really). The 2nd attempt of my wife's meal really wasn't any better. Mine was pretty good. Not sure but perhaps we were "summed up" due to the clothes we were wearing (see previous re No luggage). When my wife's meal was left largely untouched the main man was brought in. He enquired about the meal. Having said nothing for the duration (we were jet lagged and not in the mod for confrontation) I did not want to make a scene, however ... we were asked, so ... I said perhaps you start living up to the challenge instead of serving lettuce leaves. To their credit they did do that with my wife's dessert. It was largely fruit but you could see they made an effort. Overall very disappointed with the restaurant. Perhaps some hubris has set in and they have misplaced their sense of hospitality and customer first. I also do not think the atmosphere is assisted by their servery stations which are loud and obtrusive. That said, the hotel delivers in the room department and it's hotel staff are very good. Tea and coffee facilities in room. Fruit bowl on arrival in room. Rooms were clean. I would recommend this hotel. Especially if flying in to Milan and do not want to transfer to Milan city. Car hire pick up is very easy in Lugano and the town is clean, well presented, and although comparatively small it has an expansive feel about it's foreshore. Aspect of the lake is definitely worth a visit. I also think Leopoldo's elevated position is a bonus for lake views. My ratings are mainly for the Accommodation, not the restaurant (which would have been a 1 or 2). PS: hallway piped music was too loud on the 2nd morning so you may want to check your settings.
It's a Relais & Chateaux property...so of course it is all about service and exclusivity. They make you feel like you are the only guest in the hotel. Perfect romantic getaway. Go into town for the shopping, but enjoy the rooms and view from the hotel!
"Poor price / quality ratio"
This is a joke of a 5 star hotel: kitsch decoration, old infrastructure (elevators dating from the 1960's, and I'm being kind, keys and not cards to enter the rooms). The spa is ridiculously small, there is no covered swimming pool, and if you want to go to the gym, you have to cross the street and go to the 4-star hotel that belongs to the same owner. The view on the lake is mostly covered by plants. The icing on the cake was the cesar salad I ordered at the bar: 34 CHF for a big bowl of iceberg lettuce, a few pieces of chicken, a little bit of cooked egg, big slices of parmiggiano, and some croutons bought in the supermarket). All this seasoned with a very commercial dressing. What happened to the anchovies, the home-made croutons and the romaine lettuce' What about presenting it in a nice dish' When I complained the bar manager was rude and dismissive, using the classic sentence people who know little about customer service use: "we have served many salads and you are the first person to complain". Very disappointing stay, and a very poor price / quality ratio. I do not plan to go there again, and do would not recommend this hotel to anyone going to Lugano.
This place didn't make a great first impression on me, but by the end of our 3 nights there, I had warmed up considerably. To begin, the lobby is underwhelming and dated. Second, the woman with whom we checked in was brusque and cold. Neither of those made for a great welcome. Third, we went to check out the gym in the sister property across the street (no gym in the main hotel), and it is similarly about 20 years behind the times, without any windows and without a functioning water cooler the two days I went to use it. Fortunately, things improved significantly after that! Our bedrooms were huge (bedroom area, sitting room, big balcony, two walk in closets, big bathroom) and were tastefully decorated in an old world style. The view from the hotel is one of the most majestic I've seen in my entire life. Plan your days so you can enjoy a sunset drink from the terrace. We loved the live music at night too. We had dinner at the formal restaurant twice and on the casual terrace once. All three were excellent, though, as is the case in Switzerland, extremely expensive. The sommelier (Gabriel') was our favorite-- so professional and pleasant. All interactions with other front desk staff were great. Not sure why we had continual strained bad rapport with that first one. I don't think we were difficult customers! One other thought-- Switzerland is known for its amazing chocolate. I would have thought that if any hotel would put a chocolate on your pillow at night, it would be a Relais & Chateaux in Switzerland, but there weren't any treats (though the daily water bottles were nice and I suppose better for one's waistline!). If we come back to Lugano, I'd certainly come back for dinner/an evening on that terrace.
"Christmas Lunch - Elegant and Luxurious"
Very elegant, great service, very traditional. Old fashioned and classy charm. Part of the Relaix-Chateaux Chain, lives up to the expectations. Easy to reach by car - also has chauffeur services if needed.
