"Best of the 10 W's I've stayed in"
Of the 10 W Hotels, I’ve stayed in over the years, the W in Westwood is the one that always seem to work. In general, I like to describe W properties as being form over function, and I sometimes wonder if management ever stays in the rooms to see how what’s in and what's stylish can completely fail from a guest's perspective. There’s some of that in all Ws, including this one; but the W Westwood works far better than most on a number of levels. Suites are good size, staff is attentive, and the surrounding area is great. The hotel is within easy walking distance of a lot of restaurants, some very good. UCLA's Hammer Museum on Wilshire Blvd. and the small Fowler Museum on the UCLA campus can have some wonderful exhibits, and The Getty is only a few minutes by car. And every one of those museums is free to visit (although you pay to park if you drive to the Getty).
"Service no longer magical here "
For years this was one of my favorite hotels-- In the world. Really! The staff made was so great starting with the incredibly cool movie star smile, yet gracious doorman. We were there 3 days. No doorman at all. Valet guys were indifferent about our arrival. The poolside restaurant had hip & fun waitstaff. The first night we sat at the bar and the bartender seemed annoyed by our business and proceeded to gossip with the waitress. The next day at lunch (we gave it another try) the service was fast/efficient like any other restaurant-- but lacked the sparkle from previous visits. They had really fun waiters out there. I hope the hotel can fix the service... I've had wonderful visits here.
Looking at the building from a few blocks out before arriving gave us quite a surprise. It's not the modern vibe you expect from a W, it looked like a run down apartment complex... Check in was long. The front desk could not find our reservation which was booked on a third party website. This led to some frantic search through emails for hotel reservation confirmation. They later found the reservation and had to move it to their own system. I mean what kind of operating system are you using' Next, the room, it's nice and checks the boxes but the windows are small. You barely get any views of the outside. The location is weird. It's surrounded by residential buildings... There's not much around. You would probably need to walk a few blocks to get to shops and restaurants.
"Decent hotel, indecent staff"
I stay at W and Starwood a lot - 80 nights in 2017 alone. So I have a fair amount of experience with Starwood properties and W's - stayed at a W 52 nights this year so far. First things first: Of all the W's I've stayed - SF, HK, NYC, London, this one probably has the least friendly staff. NEVER have they said thank you for your business and rarely do they acknowledge platinum or gold members. A guy who checked in an hour before me told me the same thing at the bar. As a matter of fact, the manager when I checked-in during this last stay could use some lessons in how to speak to customers and be nice to frequent guests. Managerial Staff attitude aside, the property itself is pretty nice. The valet staff and STK staff is super polite - but I doubt they are hotel employees. I like the quiet location and the proximity to Century city and offices right off Wilshire. The beds are great and some of the rooms have some pretty nice showers - though you can get one with a corroded shower head from time to time. The rooms are clean and the AC is surprisingly quiet. Try to get a room on a higher floor as some of the lower rooms look into an adjacent apartment building. Overall good property, but don't expect the front desk managerial staff to be polite. Somehow they never got the memo that they are in the hospitality business and the customer is always right. My interaction with the front desk manager definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. Everyone else at the hotel is super nice though!
"Stay here when you go to LA"
The W Los Angeles is in a great location for a stay in LA. The Service is great! Brandon checked me in and was very engaging! I love staying at this hotel, all the staff is very welcoming and quick to get things done. I asked Jun for a crib and it was in my room before I got back. Overall my stay was AMAZING!
