"Great stay away from DC"
My wife and I just returned from our trip to NYC and DC and enjoyed our stay at Monaco. We stayed 2 nights and found the room to be clean and comfortable. We took advantage of the nightly wine reception and snacks and enjoyed our wine on the patio. We took the DC Metro to Kings Street/Alexandria and took the free trolley in Alexandria to the hotel. Very convenient location for travelers who utilize public transportation. This hotel is in the heart of the city's best shopping area and great restaurants.
"Lovely hotel, great location, considerate"
Hotel Monaco Alexandria provided a great business trip experience from valet parking and delivering my bags to the room so I could get to my business appointment on time to providing a $10 minibar voucher and free wifi with stash membership. Missed having coffee in my room however a lovely complimentary coffee is provided in the lobby in the mornings.
I took my best friend on a getaway for her 40th birthday. We arrived on a Thursday and left on a Tuesday. The staff was incredibly nice and helpful. We never took advantage of the 'wine meet and greet' or the pool and gym, which were big selling points for me when I was researching where to stay. We did walk through one of the wine meets though, and the vibe seemed really friendly and casual. The HUGE plus for this place is the location. It is smack dab in the center of so much fun. You are conveniently within walking distance to the waterfront, restaurants, pubs, shops, ice cream, the Torpedo Factory (awesome artisans mecca right down the road), and so much more. We felt completely safe exploring the area, whether it was bar hopping Friday night or running to National Harbor (to cure the hangover) on Saturday morning. We didn't eat at the restaurant attached to the hotel, but we did have some cocktails there one of the evenings, which while delish- were really expensive. The morning coffee bar was awesome, made even more so by the smiling faces of the staff and the cheerful greetings we got every day. The decor is vibrant and energizing without being so loud as to make you feel edgy. We got a 'double double deluxe' which was comfy and cozy (sounds much nicer than small), and clean. The bathroom was pretty tiny, but again- nicely decorated and clean. The one huge suggestion I would make- bathrooms need exhaust fans. There wasn't one. Two chicks taking showers and then trying to apply makeup in a small steamy bathroom is an experience that requires either a great deal of patience or a great deal of vodka. I visit DC a few times a year, and will definately be back (but I'll spring for the bigger bathroom). Overall, it's a tad on the pricey side, but totally worth it.
"Lovely Boutique Hotel"
The Hotel Monaco in Alexandria is situated right in the heart of historic old town Alexandria. We were there for my niece's wedding in June, and it was really the perfect venue for this event. We stayed two nights, and everything was wonderful. The hotel itself is really pretty, from the lobby to the rooms themselves. Some wedding guests even had a goldfish bowl in their room! The decor is really special and not your typical boring hotel stuff, and the staff is pleasant and helpful. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!
We visited the Hotel Monaco in Alexandria for three nights in early October. It was our first visit to the DC area, as well as our first time traveling with our golden retriever (and my first roadtrip). I did a ton of research ahead of time regarding traveling with your dog and what to expect, as well as what services the hotel offered, etc, but was honestly really nervous about doing something wrong and getting into trouble or what have you. However, it turned out amazingly well. The hotel had dog dishes and a dog bed in the room awaiting us, and was able to arrange for a dog walking service one day while we were gone for an extended period of time ($26.99 per hour, which I thought was really reasonable). She was super comfortable and, to be fair, we were pretty psyched that some of the training we had done paid off because she did behave really well. We did, however, opt to set up her massive (ridiculously large) kennel in the room for use while we were gone (just because, with my luck, she would have some sort of mental break and we would be on the hook for a gazillion dollars in damage lol ' thankfully, this was not an issue). There is some grass/dirt around the corner from the hotel and a dog park (Founders Park) about a five-minute walk away. We went to the park each morning with some coffee, which worked out well. Having read some of the other reviews, I would say that I did not experience the issues expressed regarding dog smells, dog noises, and/or their overwhelming presence, etc, but I guess that I do get our dog groomed regularly and she is very quiet 99.9% of the time (and I hate dog smell, so I feel like I would have noticed). However, I guess if you do not like dogs, maybe this is not the perfect hotel for you (or even the perfect neighborhood, which I found to be more welcoming to dogs than they seemed to be towards children lol). Indeed, I found the hotel to be very clean, modern, and well-kept. I did hear a baby crying on our floor a few times, but those seem like normal hotel noises to me. Anyways, I also thought it was really cute that, if you were traveling without a pet, they would give you a guppy to keep you company in your room. Additionally, the hotel was nice on multiple other levels. The valets are great. The fitness center is pretty well equipped for a hotel gym (two treadmills, two ellypticals, free weights, kettle bells, etc). Our room was very comfortable, well-appointed, and clean (seemed sizeable to me). There is free coffee/tea in the mornings in the lobby and free wine in the early evenings. We took advantage of the coffee, which was really quite good actually. The room service menu seemed a little pricey, but they usually are. The location was fantastic. Overall, I would definitely return to this hotel and would recommend it to others ' especially if you are traveling with your dog (the whole Old Town area is extraordinarily dog friendly). Either way, we will probably be back again, with or without our pet.
