"Lovely Boutique Hotel"
We stayed here for one night as part of a business/pleasure trip to the Washington DC area. Loved the free wine in the evening. Location is great if you want to be in downtown Alexandria, but it does not work well for visiting the museums and monuments in DC. It was a surprisingly quick trip from the airport (Reagan National).
"Boutique style in awesome location!"
I am loyal to the Kimpton brand because I enjoy the boutique hotels they offer and this one is especially nice. Wonderfully efficient room design and warm and friendly staff. Frequent guests get free wi fi and a $10 mini bar credit. You also can't best this location in Old Town Alexandria right on King Street.
"OK stay, but less than expected"
I had heard great things about the Kimpton "boutique" hotels, and had an opportunity to stay at the Monaco Alexandria on a recent business trip. When we arrived just before 6pm, the lobby was packed for the wine happy hour, and the place had a cool, fun vibe. Room was fine, although my bed felt somewhat slanted, and I couldn't get any hot water from a sink that also drained very poorly (which I made known upon check-out). Front desk staff was fine, if not a little disinterested. However, the doormen were very friendly and helpful, giving us good advice on nearby dining options. Maybe it was just that my expectations were high, or I just got the wrong room, but the Monaco Alexandria didn't quite deliver. I'll likely try another Kimpton hotel at some point, but if I'm in Alexandria again, I'll explore some other options.
I used the hotel valet for my car. When I checked out and asked for my car to be pulled around, I found my window mounted GPS unit was missing, as was the matching charger and mount. My auxiliary cable was also gone, as was my iPhone car charger. It was obvious that someone had plenty of time to root through the car at their leisure. My small emergency kit was slashed open and someone helped themselves to the matches inside and enjoyed a smoke in my car. They left trash in my cupholders which gave me the initial indication that something was wrong. When I brought this to the attention of the valet who brought my car around, he shrugged and said he just brought the car around as it was. The management gave me an "incident report" to fill out, which I will do and I'll also be filing a police report. Either my car was left unlocked and unattended (no sign of forced entry) or someone on staff helped themselves to my belongings. Either way, I will never stay at a Kimpton property again. Room was nice, bar was fully stocked. Staff was difficult to communicate with and room service was unreliable (breakfast took an hour to come). Room was clean and pretty but very dusty, my allergies gave me problems throughout my stay. If the car issues hadn't come in I probably wouldn't be writing this review, but I also likely wouldn't have wanted to stay there again. Without the theft it was fairly mediocre.
"Beautiful boutique hotel -- without the pretentiousness! Well done, Kimpton."
My daughters and I were visiting my great-uncle in the DC/VA area and he put us up at the Monaco. The location is fantastic for walking: historic Old Town Alexandria, close to museums, shopping, restaurants and waterfront. (Driving is a little dodgy, but I'm a rural girl now, so if you're used to city traffic, it won't bother you.) The hotel staff were excellent and friendly, eager to offer suggestions for coffee or breakfast or ice cream. Dog-friendly for sure! Gorgeous color palette, and a lovely indoor pool to boot that my girls loved (hey, it's family movie night in the pool once a week, apparently!). The hotel room wasn't huge, but I sense space is at a premium in Old Town Alexandria, and the layout was perfectly good for the three of us. Beautiful building. Beds like clouds. Another happy Kimpton experience.
