I recently attended a conference in Leiden but decided to stay in Amsterdam because it's a more interesting setting. Big mistake to choose this hotel. First and foremost, the location is terrible - it's in the middle of a sterile corporate park with literally no place else to get anything to eat within 1 km. The directions on the website of how to get there from the airport by public transportation are wrong; I got off the bus at the recommended stop and then walked 35 minutes (even slipping and falling on the ice) to get to the hotel, only to be told I was wrong and it shouldn't have taken so long. Problem was, I followed their directions and signs. The map they have in the hotel shows the way to the tram, but the way to the bus is off the edge of the map! Three different staff members gave me three different sets of directions. And the only food available for breakfast is in the hotel and costs around 20 Euros - good breakfast with lots of options, but very expensive. I arrived early straight from the airport and had written them in advance saying I was coming from the airport and wanted to check in early because I had to go and give a lecture that same afternoon, so I wanted to shower and freshen up and take a nap. They told me in the email response it was not possible to check in early. I went anyway (it took me 2 hours to get there from the airport in total) and to my surprise they actually did let me check in early. The room was indeed very nice and spotlessly clean. But for a hotel called "Dutch design" it is poorly designed. This is one of those hotels where to save money and environmental resources, they have a liquid soap dispenser and a shampoo dispenser. The problem is, the soap dispenser is outside of the shower, so to get soap in the shower you have to open the shower door, getting water all over the floor, reach around to the sink and squeeze the liquid soap. If, as I do, you bring bar soap with you, there is no soapdish in the shower to leave your bar of soap. There is a refrigerator in the room (so I bought some breakfast items including dairy) but no instructions how to turn it on (it formerly was one of those stocked with snacks that detected when you removed something), so I pressed a button to no avail and then left my breakfast groceries out on the desk all night, only to discover in the morning that the fridge was indeed working. I also asked if there was a business center or computer to use in the lobby, because I had to prepare a PowerPoint for my talk. They said, No, they used to have a computer for guests in the lobby but it broke and they never replaced it. For four days (I prepaid) I had to walk to the bus or tram - 1 to 2 km away - and for the first two days walked around with wet shoes, socks and feet because the hike they sent me on took me through a park, and that was to catch the bus to the airport which was the opposite direction from Amsterdam itself. The location alone nearly ruined my trip, although I got a lot of exercise, and if you don't mind walking, the tram is one of the main routes so it's possible to get back by public trans any hour of the day or night (once you learn how). But I barely had a chance to see Amsterdam because I was going to my conference by way of the airport. If you like boring suburbs than I guess the location is ok, but who goes to one of the world's great cities like Amsterdam to stay in a boring suburban corporate park'
"We felt like a burden - staff were indifferent to our problems."
The hotel itself looked lovely and was very clean. We were very happy with the room and breakfast was delicious. Unfortunately, the biggest let down was the attitude of the staff. We encountered a fair few problems during our 4 night visit - awful wifi connection in our room, food that made us sick, and our scooter had a flat tyre and was knocked over while parked outside. Whilst I understand not all of these issue were the responsibility of the hotel, the staff did nothing in the way of compensation for the wifi/bad food and in general were extremely indifferent. Given the price and reputation of this hotel, I would expect the staff to go out of their way to help us, even if it is just to accompany us to see our scooter, or provide us with a complementary tea/coffee after spending a whole evening feeling nauseous. We just felt like a burden rather than a guest. We left feeling unwelcome. Terribly disappointed.
"Good time, friendly staff"
Hotel is a little out of the city but easy to get to the tram to get into town. We walked back one day and it wasn’t that far. About 5km but got to walk through a beautiful public garden. Hotel was very clean and the room service staff were very good at cleaning our mess. The only bad thing was the terrible positioning of the lights in the rooms otherwise a very pleasant stay.
"Holiday hotel accomoodation"
What a lovely hotel. Such friendly service. There is no extra effort to appease your requirements. Smooth check-in. No porters. Situatead in a business area so travel to City is by tramway. 8 minute easy stroll to the the nearest pickup point. The rooms are perfect. Superbly comfortable. Ample space. Large beds. Crispy clean linen. Clean carpets. Spacious bathroom. Very neatly presented. Great accommodation. Please ignore any reviews that degrade this facility. Its all absolute nonsense. Believe me. Its obvious that some people complain because they feel that they have the right to complain, but be fair. There is nothing wrong with this 4 star facility. I did not see any rusty taps or cracked tiles as mentioned by others. Complete bull dust!!!!!!!! Breakfast is really fantastic. Eat as much as you like. Staff are really pleasant. Tram public service is superb. Easy to use. Highly efficient. Amsterdam was a really pleasant experience. Expect crowds. Hop on Hop off busses are really effective. This City hums with activities. No time to be bored. Food and drink restaurants everywhere to be seen. Try the side streets. English language spoken fluently everywhere. Watch out for the cyclists everywhere. City designed to cater for cycling. Not an issue though. Loved Amsterdam.
