"High tea at the Mount Nelson"
As part of the birthday celebrations of my niece, we had high tea at the Mount Nelson. It was everything I hoped it would be. Excellent service, in beautiful surroundings that reminds one of a distinctly more genteel era. Everything was prepared with skill and attention to detail. Excellent variety of delights. One should occasionally indulge a bit and I would most definately recommend this as a little delightful experience. Also make some effort and dress up a bit!
"High Tea Experience"
It was an experience and something one would expect from a 5* hotel but where we have been let down in the past at other high tea venues. The High Tea is expensive but we did not go in with high hopes. However, that was thrown to the wind from the minute we walked in to the time we left. We were made to feel special, the food was REALLY good (my son and I are chefs - my son a patisserie chef and my husband is incredibly critical of food). Everything was tasty, from the tier of savouries to the laden buffet of sweet treats. Our waiter Deen was amazing - he created a tea experience and we learnt a lot about what we were drinking. We even had the opportunity for a chat with the Head Patisserie Chef, Craig - he was warm and open and very passionate about what he does - it shows in the food! All in all a superb afternoon and we will be returning very soon.
"A Grand Old Hotel"
I loved this place. The room was spacious and gracious, the staff warm and welcoming, and the food was outstanding. Had excellent food in the restaurant, accompanied by a wonderful piano player. The breakfast was a wonderful buffet, including a fabulous custard filled croissant
"Chefs Table Experience"
Back in Cape Town and of course a visit to the "Nellie" and this time lunch at the Chefs Table. I started with a cold beer on the lawn in beautiful surroundings and sunshine looking forward to my coming experience. My waitress collected me and we strolled through the back areas to the main kitchen where in a small cove the chefs tables are situated. Unfortunately on this occasion I was alone and the kitchen was quiet however I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch with wine pairing served by my own waitress and the chef who explained each delicious dish as he presented it. The pastry chef was very accommodating and must be mentioned for offering me an explanation and a serving of cape cheese. It would be a wonderful experience with a full chefs table and very busy kitchen but I still had a great time. All staff encountered were friendly and courteous and I cannot recommend this establishment enough!
"The Chef's Table at the Mount Nelson Hotel is Gastronomy heaven"
When visiting the Mount Nelson Hotel, make a point to book a spot at the "Chef's Table", which is located in the corner INSIDE the kitchen. It is essential to make a reservation because there are limited seating available. All the courses (7+) is paired with a local wine. Before a dish is served the Chef that actually prepared the food comes and tells you about him/herself, about the ingredients, and the way that the food was prepared. Then you can walk through the kitchen and interact with everyone (None of them have Gordon Ramsey's Hell's Kitchen attitude). For a fixed rate the value offering is worth every cent spent. Plan to spend whole night there, or until they kick you out, which will not happen because by that time you will all be like family.
