Located in the closest neighbourhood of the ancient Roman road Aurelia, the Black hotel is only a few kilometres away from the Vatican City and 10 min by car from a golf course.
The hotel enjoys an easy access to the sea and the city.
"Nice hotel, don’t know what people are moaning about "
We only stayed for two nights but the room was spacious and clean. Yes the wardrobe had chains for a door and you had to crouch to have a shower but the facilities were great. Staff were polite, especially Franco behind the bar and the breakfast was superb with loads of choice! The shuttle to the local Metro was really convenient and the Metro system itself was easy to navigate and cheap @ €7 per day! We managed to see almost everything in one long day. Took the 246 bus next day to the Metro as got up later and wanted to see Vatican City etc. Getting on the right side of the road to catch the 246 was a bit of a challenge and we ended up going the wrong way (you need to be on the side of the road where the campsite is) All in all we were both very happy with the accommodation and location. Thanks all!!
"NOT AS DESCRIBED/PICTURED"
Not a 4* hotel at all. Cons: - rooms are small - fridge doesn't work - wardrobe is basically a small hole in the wall with chains as a door with 3 coat hangers - no English tv - A/C had to be turned off at night as way too noisy - bathroom door lock jammed leaving my partner trapped in there over 30mins whilst I was downstairs having breakfast - the only hot food for breakfast is scrambled egg and cheap bacon - no balcony - swimming pool is green! Desperate for a clean! I was happy to have found a hotel with a pool but majorly disappointed I couldn't use it, I'm not getting in that - there was only 4 wooden sun loungers (that I could see) with no cushions, and the trees hid the sun anyway so I never bothered to even go down to sunbathe - the bar is shut during the day! So we had to walk the shop to get drinks - evening buffet is 15e with very little choice. We never stayed to eat in because of this - the elevator was broke. Not ideal when you're on the top floor - 6e per person per night in tourist tax to stay here! Pros: - staff are lovely! - quiet area - free shuttle bus to metro (book in advance) - the safe is free to use - fresh towels/linen daily I don't care if coming in September means that the season is nearly over. That's not an excuse. This is poor for a "4*"
There's no need it advertising free wifi if it doesn't reach your room. The room itself was small and plain with chains intsead of doors for the wardrobe which didn't have enough hangers and no drawers so my clothes remained in my suitcase. The bathroom was small and I had to literally crouch to 5ft to take a shower due to how the roof slanted. The price of drinks was surprising; €5 for a bottle of Peroni which works out at £5 since the decrease in the exchange rate. The breakfast canteen had good food but there wasn't enough choice really. Having said this, the review is almost soley based on the building itself: the staff were talkative and helpful and spoke English well.
"Good value hotel but not 4*"
Stayed at the black hotel for a week after getting quite a good deal with a friend. Overall enjoyed our stay, however this hotel was simply not a 4 star hotel. Honestly feel this hotel is only rated 4 stars by the tourist board so that it allows them to charge more city tax vs staying at a 3 star hotel. There were many pros and cons. Ideally, I'd rate this hotel as 3.5 out of 5. Pros: - good sized pool with pool towels provided - good sized rooms - clean hotel and clean rooms being cleaned every day and new towels given. - free breakfast with decent selection - free shuttle bus to the station (although there should be more than 3 just in the morning. There should be returns too!) - location: unlike many people im not going to complain about the location. Yes it is quite far out of Rome, however this is reflected in the price and clearly stated on the website. The actual location is decent near a supermarket and McDonald's Negatives: - what four star hotel doesn't have an iron'! - there isn't one TV channel in English which is quite annoying when you want a chilled night in. - mixed customer service levels: some people great on the front desk and some not so friendly or engaging. - front desk staff aren't so helpful in terms of recommending travel plans etc - food and drink in the hotel is very expensive for what it is. As a result we ate out or brought food in the supermarket. Very big missed opportunity for them. - On the weekends locals come and use the pool all day so there any no sun beds. Hotel guests should have priority especially when they only have like 10 sun beds. - shuttle bus only drops you off at the station in the morning and doesn't pick up at set points in the evening. Unfortunately, to walk back from the station is 30 mins so we often spent 8-9 euros on taxis or 15-20 from the city centre. - although breakfast was free the scrambled eggs were always cold and they don't have a proper toaster so you spend ages trying to use their sandwich toaster thingy - gym: it's great they have a gym... however very limited weight equipment . Weights only go up to 10kg which is quite poor. Given they promote the gym on their website they should improve it. - lacks atmosphere and very boring to spend time there in evenings. Could do with a bigger bar and table tennis or pool tables etc.
The room is cosy and nice, a little bit small but its okay. It is clean and the breakfast is nice, there is a lot to choose from. We had a unpleasantry with the maid, since she throw away our shopping bag. the location is good since you are in Rome and everything near the center is expensive.
