"Very helpful and friendly staff"
Good location for sightseeing. Although our room looked over courtyard so no view it was quiet and very comfortable. Good breakfast and complimentary buffet supper, coffee and afternoon pancakes a real bonus. Lovely lady on reception even brought in her own peppermint tea bags as they are hard to get in Norway. Nothing too much trouble.
"Family room and fantastic customer service make this a winner"
Is this the nicest hotel I've ever stayed at' No. But whatever the nicest one was, this one sure gives it a run for its money in the customer service department. First, for families traveling to Oslo, the Clarion Collection Hotel Bastion offers a couple of family rooms that you must reserve well in advance. I think there might be only two in the whole hotel, and as anyone who travels with kids in Europe knows, you're lucky to find any room that accommodate a family. Our room had a large separate bedroom with what looked like a king-ish sized bed. It had a topper on the mattress that turned the two twin-sized mattresses/box springs beneath into a bonafide bed with no crack down the middle. The separate bedroom was clearly designed to be the kids' room, but my husband and I like privacy. There was also a larger-than-expected living area with a sofa and two twin-ish sized beds -- perfect for up to two kids. The customer service at this hotel is really what made this a special stay for us. Front desk staff went out of their way to be helpful and accommodating. For example, when we were having trouble with the dryer door periodically popping open mid-cycle when we were doing our laundry, we headed to the basement to check on it. As we reached the main floor of the hotel, the front desk staff person said she'd already been down to check on it on our behalf. She actually made a special trip to the basement for us, just to check on our laundry. She also gave us unlimited tokens for use in the dryer, given our problem with it. The kitchen staff also couldn't have been more accommodating. My daughter is a vegetarian and was unable to find something suitable for a main course during one of the free dinners. The kitchen made a huge plate of plain pasta just for her. It was very heartwarming. There are two other reasons to stay here: the free food and the location. As for location, this hotel is only about a 6 minute walk from the Central Station and is just 3 blocks from the main pedestrian walkway, Karl Johans Gate. The street seems a little "questionable" at first glance, since there aren't many active businesses, but I realized after that it is just because the whole street is being renovated. It was a safe neighborhood and convenient to all the sights in Oslo. And the free food. This hotel offers an unbelievable breakfast: fresh eggs and pancake batter to make your own, or cooked eggs, bacon and sausage already prepared, plus fresh vegetables, cheeses, sliced meats, loaves of bread and several kinds of butter/margarine/spreads and jams, oatmeal and granola with toppings that range from several kinds of yogurts, to flax seeds and dried coconut. The free afternoon snack was make-your-own pancakes (and there is always apples, coffee, and various crackers and other snacks available), and the free "light" dinner, varied nightly. There was a meat baked ziti one night and broiled fish another. Each dinner was served with soup, bread, salad, fruit and a simple dessert. Given the price of eating out in Oslo, the option of 2-3 free meals a day is an amazing cost savings, and a convenience, too.
If you are a family avoid this hotel. There are several massage parlors in the same building structures and a strip/sex club that opens next to these. There are also several other sex/strip clubs on the next block. The hotel is next to the wharf. Apparently the wharf is where a lot of drug business takes place. My wife and I were attacked in broad daylight in front of the hotel at knife point by a drug addict. Avoid the area if you have children or are elderly. We shared the incident with the hotel reception who advised us to punch the drug addicts the next time. Apparently locals never get targeted, it's just the tourists who get attacked because they are there on a short stay and don't want to waste time sitting at a Norwegian Police station. The Police apparently don't bother investigating as this is deemed a high crime area. Now to the business ethics of the Nordic hotels. The room we booked online and the pictures we saw did not in the least resemble the room we were given. The room on the seventh floor overlooking an inner courtyard with generators/aircon was the size of a cupboard and extremely warm. The heating was on in the summer! Apparently this is a favorite bait and switch number that the hotels pulls to upsell and upgrade customers to better rooms. So you have to pay more to get the room you originally booked! Albeit at a discounted rate of only 200 instead of 400. Numerous other customers commented on this on this hotel review page. By the way, the Aircon in the room does not work! It felt like everything in this hotel was designed to make you uncomfortable: starting with the steep hotel entrance staircase you have to carry your luggage up, of course there is no ramp. The half stairs in the hallways you have to carry your bag and the raised room doorway are your next challenges. Unless of course you find someone to help you. Those people are reserved for tour groups. Breakfast is another story. They expect you to cook your own eggs and pancakes. Not the easiest thing to do unless you have worked as a short order cook at a diner and why should you be cooking on your vacation. The breakfast on offer gets better or worse according to the nationality of the tour groups that stay there. Housekeeping is a mess! Had to keep insisting our room be serviced and restocked several times because the room was not serviced. Even then we got foot towels instead of hand/bath towels and no restocking of cosmetics. This is a organization that treats you like a customer instead of a guest. You pay high prices for a bad product. AVOID. AVOID. Hotel management please spare me with a generic reply to this review.
Lovely hotel, great location, quiet and very spacious rooms, good breakfast menu, gym and sauna. Staff were really helpful. Public transport close by. Access to museums and the centre of town, the old old town is very near as well.
The location is convenient. It is close to the train station and DFDS terminal. Tourist attractions are within walking distance. We had a clean and spacious family room. The breakfast and evening meal are delicious. The afternoon tea is surprisingly good. We had a very pleasant stay in this hotel. Actually, it is the best hotel we have ever stayed in Norway.
