Our tour ended at this centrally located hotel. There appeared to be two distinct sections to the hotel and we were in the older section in a tiny, poorly lit room. As it was raining, we decided to dine in and were disappointed with the buffet. Poor choices, 1 or 2 entrees, one choice for soup, some salad and no desserts. The breakfast buffet was not much better. There are other centrally located hotels, use them.
"Value for Money in an Expensive City"
Clarion Collection Bastion Oslo Norway When I am researching a hotel for one of my escorted tours I look for several important features, these being; • Location – must be able to walk to city centre or selected attractions • Value for money – What does it include, how does pricing compare with other similar rated hotels etc. • Rating: I usually look for 3.5 – 4 star hotels simply because these offer all the creature comforts but you can still afford to open the bar fridge in your room. Alas booze is very expensive anywhere in Norway, be aware when ordering a bottle of wine with dinner or a beer with friends. The Clarion Collection Bastion ticked all these boxes, which is never a given when searching online, but having now experienced the property, along with 10 others, all of the same view, this hotel is a winner. It is not the Ritz and never sets out to be more than it is, which I liked. The location is ideal for walking into town, only 4 blocks (10 mins max) from central station and city centre, with main street for shopping and eateries. Opera House (a must visit to walk on the roof) is just mins away. The Castle and other historical sites are 5 mins walk. What I liked most was the relaxed homely feel to the lobby, restaurant and reception rooms. The wallpapered walls gave it a soft inviting atmosphere. The whole hotel is compact as are the rooms but they include everything you need and have a nice feel to them. Do not try to compare 4 star hotels in Asia with Europe they are worlds apart manly due to space being at a premium. You get what you pay for. Excellent value for money - 100%. Breakfast and Dinner buffets are included in the tariff as well as coffee and tea all day with fresh fruit available in the lounge area. If you have ever eaten out in Oslo you will understand just how much value the free dinner represents. It was also good quality food and plentiful and the menu changed every night. The beds were exceptionally comfortable something all 10 of us commented on. The staff were great, perfect English and willing to accommodate your requests where ever possible, which made our stay very enjoyable. Highly recommended, well worth considering for your next visit to Oslo.
"Really, really small room"
Streetlight right out the window so the room never got dark at night. Silly small room. Whoever designed the room had never slept in their own room. Just an ok breakfast. I will never be back! Not a great location
"Clean, good service, but very (!!) small rooms.."
The hotell is located 15-20 minutes walk from the station (Oslo S), the opera and the city Centre, but close to the fortress and old city part. The front desk staff and those in the breakfast restaurant are very nice. However, our room was the smallest we ever have had. We could not open the suitcase (carry on size!) and the door to the bathroom at the same time. You have to enter the shower sideways because the doors cannot open fully. How a room could cost close to Nkr 1600 and be worth max 500 is a shame. Stay away from room 709 or demand half price! The room should max be a single room for the future. The breakfast area is ok, and they serve what you mostly need for a breakfast, but not more.
"Room for housekeeping improvement"
The hotel is very conveniently located an easy, flattish walk of about 6 or 7 minutes from Oslo Central Station. One or two bits of bumpy pavement and differences in levels over which to man-handle suitcases but nothing too onerous and traffic lights are easy to understand as to when it is safe to cross roads en route. We felt quite safe and comfortable walking around the general area in the evenings. The welcome from Reception staff was warm, friendly, informative and helpful. Common areas are well presented and there is also a gym/sauna. There is a smallish lift to upper floors but it can get rather busy (and thus slow) at peak times, but stairs are fine unless accompanied by awkward or heavy bags. Our "superior" room was pleasingly large with comfortable twin beds, sofa, easy chair, table, desk, TV, tea/coffee making facility, reasonable lighting options, fridge, en suite bathroom with towels and toiletries and an additional "children's" bedroom providing extra space which we found useful. Not very well provided for in terms of space for hanging and storing clothes. Unfortunately it became apparent that the room had not been properly cleaned prior to our arrival as we found spilled wine, assorted wrappings, a dirty glass behind the sofa, wine stains on the window ledge and wall, dusty window sills and the tops of the picture frames had plainly not been touched in months- they were thick with dust that came off in clumps. We are not usually so pedantic about this sort of thing, and my wife has worked as a chambermaid in the past so appreciates it is a difficult and thankless job, but the obvious spillage issue just attuned us more to a general lack of thoroughness in housekeeping and presumably its supervision. We did politely mention some of this to the hotel and whereas a modest cleansing was done so far as the spillage was concerned it was not done properly, which we found surprising. Also the bathroom was not cleaned as it should have been, WC paper was not replenished (we found a spare roll under the sink), tooth glasses were removed and not replaced, bathroom toiletries were not replenished, tea/coffee supplies were not replenished and mugs left dirty. So, room for improvement in housekeeping and supervision. The room overlooked the street and there was some noise from late night revellers and traffic but we have faced far worse elsewhere and the additional "childrens' room" provided a quieter retreat. The inclusive buffet breakfasts were good value with a choice of hot and cold options and some very nice bread. Some choices were not replenished when exhausted but it must be difficult to predict demand from one day to the next. The inclusive evening buffet was limited in its choice but good value in the main, hearty and tasty (except for the "haddock" fishcakes). Serving staff were efficient. We liked the fact that you can have as much or as little as you like, the latter preference helped by some very small plates! The Reception doubles as a bar, selling various drinks at meal times. Check out was quick and efficient and we thought we had a reasonable value stay by Norwegian standards and prices.
