"In the middle of a building site, but centrally located"
If you are attending the ICC/Symphony Hall then this is perfect, it's a 2 minute walk from the hotel. The hotel itself is really in desperate need of modernisation, which they seem to be doing. There were carpet fitters all over the place and their needs certainly outweighed those of the guests. I got stuck in a lift with a carpet fitter whose mates thought it hilarious to press every button and enjoy themselves.. There is no air conditioning in the rooms/hotel and with the building work it's impossible to leave the windows open, so the rooms become really warm and stuffy. That being said the bed was really comfy and despite being something out of the 1970's it had everything you could need in a hotel room. The restaurant was ok, the food was really good to be fair. Breakfast had plenty of choice, but the coffee was awful and they could really do with a decent machine opposed to a thermal flask on a counter. There is a Chinese/Singapore brasserie in the evening and the food was really good and reasonably priced, but being so central we only ate in on one night, the choice in the near vicinity was huge, so the evening meal shouldn't really be a stumbling block. I had little interaction with the staff, so cannot really comment on their abilities or courtesy to residents. I think once modernised and refurbished this would be an awesome hotel, but whilst all the work is ongoing, both inside and out, it was convenient but not an overly enjoyable stay. My last note is plan your route in to the hotel, because of the massive amount of building work in this area it is a real pain to drive to the hotel, you get sent around what seemed like half of Birmingham just because of a restricted right hand turn.
"Outdated and curt reception staff"
Came here overnight and had a family room, when initially arriving and prior to coming staff were fantastic and friendly. We came into our family room and there was a distinct fishy smell (smelled like old wiring overheating), we rang reception and although the staff informed us they were very full and would have to check they could Re accommodate us they did change our room without further issue. We went down to the Asian Resturant in the hotel, staff were friendly and the food fantastic only issue here was extremely slow service (at one point our sons drink had been sat on the bar for 15 mins), what was good was if your staying you can get 10% off the food but you need to have pre-authorised to pay by card when checking into the hotel (you can't pay cash at the Resturant to get the offer). When back up in the room we started to notice various things which made our stay unpleasant, two out of three towels were dirty and had make up on, the sign in the bedroom was sticky where someone had previously spilt a drink on it and it hadn't been cleaned, the only bank of plugs in the room were over by the window and didn't work so to charge your phone or use the hairdryer you had to unplug the TV, the room looked out over ongoing building works and office block but there were no nets over the windows meaning you had to keep closing the curtains to get changed or for privacy making the room very dark and the shower head was cracked meaning when turned it on the water gushed out backwards and onto the floor. When checking out I had written the front desk supervisor a list of issues on the comment card which came with the room so they were able to rectify these for the next guest, he questioned me as to why I hadn't raised these during my stay and made me feel quite embarrassed I advised I was not going to raise issues at 12pm at night or when I was undressed realising the towels were dirty and gained a very curt response saying there is nothing he could do about it now and he would let the manager know. This is not a response I would expect from a supposed 4* hotel and I would imagine my comment card will be destined straight for the bin. I would not stay here again and although they are updating the room carpeting the rooms are very tired, outdated and need a complete revamp to bring the hotel back into line with so many other great hotels in the area. The final sting in the tail is despite paying our bill promptly on exit over a week later the hotel are still holding a £50 pending transaction against our bank account and since settling up as we left you would expect this to be lifted, people providing their card details for spending while in hotel should be made aware of this.
"Good location "
Hotel is well located for Broad Street restaurants and bars, staff on reception are very friendly and helpful. The room itself was cosy and had everything needed for a comfortable stay including a bath, comfy bedding and 24 hour room service. The room was a little warm however a fan was provided. I used the fitness room which was small but provided a couple of treadmills, bikes and free weights. Overall a comfortable stay and I would come back.
"Great location and friendly staff"
Very difficult to drive to with the current roadworks taking place. We gave up and parked in a nearby car park and walked there! Staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are dated but comfortable. Our room was very warm, to the point of uncomfortable but a fan was provided which helped. We upgraded to a club room which gave us 2 free drinks, breakfast and a late check out. The location was perfect for the NIA, Broad Street and the bars and restaurants by the canal. Just a short walk so no need for taxis. Overall good value for money.
"Decent, good value"
Stayed last weekend for a night. Good location, a short walk from the station. I arrived before scheduled check in but they gave me a room right away. Clean and comfortable and noisy guest late at night seemed to be dealt with well! I'd stay again for sure.
