The Çukurhan is positioned opposite the Ankara Citadel, near the historical site formerly called the Horse Market on the west side of the Çengelhan Rahmi M. Koç Museum. During the reign of the Ottomans, the Han was affiliated to Sheikh ul-islam (the chief religious official in the Ottoman Empire) Ankaravî Mehmed Emin Efendi Foundation.
The hotel’s brick edifice and rustic wooden planks support a lovely tile roof, constructed during the 16th or 17th century. During this time, The Çukurhan was used as a “caravanserai,” or traditional Inn with a quaint marketplace in the courtyard. Throughout the centuries, it maintained its commercial relevance with a variety of goods sold including: mohair, wool, grains, dried fruits, and vegetables.
In 1950, a fire swept through the Çukurhan, seriously damaging much of the hotel. However, a renovation soon afterward fixed many of the damaged sections, but the originally form was abandoned for a new, modernized version at the end of the 20th century.
The World Monuments Fund placed the Han on the “Watch List of 100 Most Endangered Sites of the World.” It was leased on a “Renovate-Operate- Transfer” basis in October 2006 by Çengelhan Inc., a company of the Rahmi M. Koç Foundation for Museology and Culture, from the Turkish Prime Ministry General Directorate of Foundations, Ankara Regional Directorate. In October 2007, the restoration period began, lasting until May 2007. This process was marked with extraordinary care and attention to preserving the original state and form of the building. The entire courtyard area was glassed to keep an ambience of privacy and luxury and maintain the overall feel of building’s original ambience
