"Good service, clean and neat, comfortable."
Hotel conveniently located for the convention center. Not ideal for tourism in Kyoto but it takes 20' by taxi or about 40 by public transport (easy and efficient). Good choice of restaurants where the service is a little slow and not all staff are completely familiar with the English. Kindness at the expect Japanese level: impeccable. Rooms large, very comfortable, equipped with everything, power socket both at bedside and at the desk. USB also at bedside. Super comfortable bed and bathroom. Change of pyjama every day, clean, fragrant and ironed. Ideal staying for intense meeting activities and little time to rest and relax.
Stayed at this hotel in January 2018 during a business trip to Kyoto. the rooms are nice and quiet and some of them are going through renovations right now so it might be noisy during the day. well connected to metro line so it is super easy to get to the Kyoto station
English review follows Japanese. Grand Prince Kyoto Hotel is next to Kokusaikaikan station. Although it's not in the centre of Kyoto, they have prices in the winter that are significantly cheaper sometimes, if there are no conferences at the adjacent conference center. These are excellent value and often appear in December or January. Service is good but they needed to be reminded of the rule that non-Japanese living in Japan don't need to show passports. It's not good to ask for passports based on facial appearance. I spoke only Japanese up to this point, and the hotel should check and accept the address given on the hotel registration form. In other respects they have good service, a good location, large, nicely furnished and comfortable rooms, and are only 20 minutes from Kyoto JR station or 15 minutes from Karasumaoike station. The hotel is visually appealing and has nice grounds. I usually stay here once a year in the winter. Snow can be seen on the hills in the distance from some rooms which is nice. Also there's a convenience store at the nearby metro station. Be careful that the passageway from the metro station closes at maybe 22:00 or 22:30. Exit 4-2 is very near the hotel, but the other exit is much further and finding the hotel may be difficult late at night. For sightseeing in Kyoto, a 1-way trip to Karasumaoike is 290 yen (round-trip 580 yen). A 1-day pass is only 600 yen.
"Grand but aging hotel with history"
This was my second visit to this hotel. The rooms are large and comfortable and because of the location many miles north of the heart of town, the area is very quiet. It is a great place to host a conference given its large banquet facilities, excellent kitchen, and proximity to the conference center. It is possible to take a subway to and from downtown (10 minute walk to the station + 20 minute ride on the train). A taxi will cost between $25 and $30 depending on traffic to get downtown, plus a little more if going to the main train station. As mentioned in other reviews, this hotel is now aging with stains in carpet and watermarks on tables, at least in my room. This is probably not the ideal hotel to stay at if your main reason for visiting is tourism.
This hotel was probably a nice hotel at one time but the location is remote and the rooms are tired. A large facility setup for business meetings or conventions. For a tourist the location is bad and requires taxi transportation to all the main shopping and food areas. You can’t step outside and find a restaurant or shopping area. The hotel could use a major room remodel. It’s clean but dated. However the old bar is great.
