"One night in Stockholm"
We were in Stockholm for the Europa League cup final (Man United fans in case you're wondering so it was a great trip) When looking for hotels I saw the Birger Jarl and though it was a bit different so I though why not. Breakfast is included and it's a few minutes walk from the old town and given that Stockholm is well known for being spread over several island it seemed appropriate to stay in a floating hotel. We were in a 3 person cabin which was quite small (which to be fair was what I expected) but all we needed was somewhere to sleep after a long day sightseeing and the match. The hotel has a bar on the top deck which offers great views across the old town and a bar inside as the bar on deck might be a bit cold in winter. The staff were helpful and friendly and breakfast was included and although the breakfast is quite basic it does the job.
"Disappointing & way over-priced!"
Upfront I'll say that we were travelling from Oslo to Stockholm by train, then tried to book a Hotel. We were on holiday & had no idea the Europa Soccer Cup Final was to be the day after we arrived in Stockholm. Consequently many hotels were booked out & even 'live' as I was booking through normal hotel booking websites, the prices changed or the rooms 'disappeared'. So I know this was a busy time. However, we ended up paying nearly $1,000 AUD for 2 nights at this non-central hotel. And this price went up over $100 in the couple of minutes we were on the website. So I am not impressed at the ethics of hotels who escalate prices so hugely for the average traveller! That being said, we booked a double room, with all the images showing something we did not get. We had room 330. It was literally a 'postage stamp'. We had a bigger room & certainly a bigger bathroom, at the smallish Transit Hotel in Singapore Airport! For the huge price, we had a back facing room (see photo). This was maybe good, as we did not get noise, but the view was abysmal! Certainly not reflective of the price & photos of our selected room. The bed - base with a pillow top - sheet over the pillow top was way too small & pulled out instantly you laid on the bed. Bedding was too hot - we asked for lighter cover for our second night. We'd returned to our room after a long walk & tour & had an afternoon nap. The housekeeper burst into the room (there was no 'do not disturb' sign in our room at all). & we called out to her to come back later - did not happen, so we cooked the second night too!!! The bathroom was sooooo tiny! Held onto the basin to use the toilet. A swing shower screen, protected nothing as it swung & allowed water everywhere - I challenge the management to experience it first-hand! The drain was just beside the toilet so shower water wet the whole room floor. Good shower pressure & temperature, good heated towel rail....no exhaust fan, but they provided a window squeegee to clear the 'fog' off the mirror. Aerated water provided. Room safe & lighting/desk were good. Reception staff were great. Breakfast was extensive and of very good quality - no complaints there at all! Housekeepers were disappointing. We went down to breakfast early-ish & expected to go back & finish cleaning teeth etc before room was serviced. But no...they must have been watching & dived in, so we instantly had a room which we had to mess up a bit, before 9am! As mentioned earlier, the sheet did not cover the mattress & was very uncomfortable. Our taxi from Central Station was about 335KR - so about $52AUD. We walked to the city centre next day & it was actually quite easy - a taxi one way was about $25AUD. Overall, this was a very basic hotel.
"Nice hotel, friendly front desk, excellent food at bar"
We stayed at Birger Jarl for three nights in May 2017. The rooms are small in my opinion. The front desk folks are very friendly and helpful. It was our first trip to Sweden and we were apprehensive about getting vegetarian food. They have a bar at the lobby that has an excellent vegetarian Burger (Halloumi Burger!). The folks at the bar were also very friendly and helpful. The bathroom is compact but well designed and modern. The lobby is well lit with natural light and so is the Breakfast place. Overall I recommend the hotel.
"A great place to stay"
The Birger Jarl is a lovely well situated comfortable hotel in Stockholm. Clean, small but well equipped room it was as they say in Sweden "lagom" - just right!! Very easy to get into the main city centre - its the Radmansgata station just a couple of stops to T-Centralen and you're in the heart of the city. A very impressive building perhaps the best things I found about this hotel were the staff and breakfast buffet. Per and Karin in particular were so helpful and made my stay really enjoyable giving me assistance in getting around to see the things I wanted to. The breakfast buffet Id never seen anything like that before - just somehow every possible thing you might fancy for breakfast to help yourself to. You want cripsbread and meatballs'' Yep. yoghurt, cold meats, salads'' Bacon, eggs, beans, toast, pastries ... I could go on. Really sets you up for the day. Special diets catered for too. If you're going to Stockholm then you're all set staying here. Just full marks all round. Hope to go back.
"Too expensive for the quality offered"
I spent two nights in this hotel during a business trip to Stockholm. Due to the last moment reservation I had to book what remained available: a junior suite for 300€ per night. The room was old, with blinds that only partially sheltered the room, which in May means waking up at 5:30 am, with no possibility of better shutters. The air conditioning kept doing quite a loud noise all the time, with no possibility to shut it down. Also, the room is noisy because located on the road to the hotel gym. The top floor is served only by an elevator out of three, which results in long waitings during "rush hours". On the positive side it must be counted a very comfortable bed, the cleanliness of the room and the great courtesy of the staff. Also, the breakfast buffet is varied and good. On the food side must worth to mention not to use the room service: I had to because I had to work, but it's very expensive and the portions are small. Better to go in one of the restaurants nearby. Overall, I don't feel to recommend this hotel, and especially for this price!
