"Beautiful hotel in Syntagma Square"
The nicest hotel in central Athens (the renovated Astir palace will be better and close enough when complete). Rooms are beautiful if a bit small, but the service is attentive, the common areas are spectacular, and the location is perfect for getting around. Particularly for business travel in Greece, it is the hub of activity.
"Breakfast view is ACTUALLY depicted with the picture."
The rooftop restaurant has a STUNNING view and is one of the best breakfasts in the city. They are very accommodating, and we found many mornings were actually one of the best meals of the day. Staff is great. Food is wonderful. View is amazing. The dinner was not bad, we had the first night - but I was so messed up from the time change, I could not tell you what I ate.
"Beautiful hotel "
We stayed at the amazing Hotel Grande Bretagne for 2 nights to begin our Greek vacation. The hotel was beautiful, room was very good size and quiet, looking out on an inner courtyard. Bed was very comfortable, and bathroom was elegant with a great shower. Our favorite part of this hotel was the magnificent view of the Acropolis from the rooftop restaurant. It was amazing to enjoy during the wonderful breakfast buffet each morning. We even booked a table for dinner on our anniversary, around sunset, to see the Acropolis lights come on and add to the incredible backdrop. The one criticism I would give, however, was that we had had a lovely gift of a bottle of champagne and fruit bowl sent to us on our anniversary, from a friend, but it came while we were at dinner. When we returned after 10, it was too late to enjoy it and we were checking out the next day. We did take it with us, but would have enjoyed it before our dinner. I'm not sure why the timing was off, but it was a small issue during an otherwise fabulous stay. We would highly recommend the Hotel Grande Bretagne.
"Suave mari magno"
In a city where you cannot help noticing how life is difficult for the locals, the Hotel de Grande Bretagne is an island of luxury. On your balcony facing the famous Constitution square you will witness every hour the change of the guards on the steps of the Parliament. Location can not be bettered, especially at night when the Acropolis and theParthenon is in full sight. Rooms are adequate and bathrooms emit vibes coming straight from the 1980s. Breakfast is better than adequate and room service close to perfection. Kudos to the staff who can easily compete to their counterparts in Paris and London. They found a guide for me who was knowledgeable and with whom I could discuss Greek history and Greek culture without being overwhelmed. This a great hotel. I tried to convince myself that there was nothing wrong in indulging in such luxury while outside life was so hard to so many. Hence came to my mind those words form Lucrece "Suave mari magno e terra ..." It is sweet to watch from the shore sailors at see fighting against danger in a tempestuous sea .... because one can then better appreciate one's own good fortune
Make sure to check out the pool and saunas downstairs! Amazing experience and good neighborhood. We stayed 2 nights and had amazing views of the Acropolis. Area around is very safe and easy to get to other places!
