We stayed for two nights and found this hotel to be lovely. We had drinks in the roof and in the lobby bar. Both were beautiful. We had dinner on the roof with an amazing view of the Acropolis and an amazing dinner. The concierge staff were very helpful.
Absolutely perfect location for couple days stay prior to heading out to the islands. Can easily walk to sites esp landmarks, Plaka, and Acropolis. Acropolis tip: get there before it opens-take $3 euro uber to top of it and get tickets. You can spend all day walking around and down to Agora etc.. and then back to hotel. Fun rooftop pool and bar. Cigar bar was well appointed but we do not like smoke so did not have a drink. The spa pool was also quieter if the rooftop was too crowded. RSVP well in advance to dine at GB Rooftop. We were rewarded with the best table in the house. Room was spacious (we were SPG upgraded to butler level) and romantic.
"No Better Place to Stay!"
It is the very conveniently located to everything. You are well within walking distance to the Old Town - Plaka, Acropolis Museum ( which is another must visit when you are in Athens), Arch of Hadrian, Temple of Olympian Zeus, etc. The property is pretty big and tastefully updated. It does give you a very grand feel to it. The gift shops are like museum's gift shop. Everything there please your eyes and taste buds, if not your wallet. The hotel has both an indoor and outdoor pool, restaurants, spa, separate check-in for suite with butler service. The Junior Suite with Butler service is very spacious with lots of room to move around with a King bed, roll-away bed for our 6 six year old, walk-in closet and a bathroom with separate shower and bath tub, double sinks and well accessorized with Molten Brown toiletry. The suite also has a good size desk and ample room for a sitting area with a arm chair and sofa with a coffee table. The only thing that I can see improving would be placing some clear anti-slip pad between the glass and the coffee table and bedside tables to prevent the glass keep sliding away from the furniture. Besides its own Roof Garden Restaurant on the 8th floor overlooking the Acropolis, Parliament Building, amphitheater, and the city, Hotel Grande Bretagne's brother hotel, King George Hotel, which is just located next door, also has a roof top restaurant called Tudor Hall sharing the same view. Tudor Hall has been awarded Michelin Star 2017. Butler and Concierge at the hotel can assist you in making reservations for both restaurants. Don't miss these two restaurants when you are in town!! Staff are very friendly. The cleaning ladies we met on the hallway are all very friendly with great smile on their face. The suite are very clean and well maintained. If there is anything that I have to comment on the downside would be the check-in process which was rather slow. We didn't get into the our suite well beyond the promised time at 2pm. We weren't alone as while we were waiting on the 6th floor receptionist area for the guests who reserved suites we witnessed others who were like us waiting to access their rooms. This was our second stay in this property. The last time was 10 years ago. Both times were very memorable and satisfying! I can't recommend any higher. Shhh..... I think I will try out King George Hotel next time.
"Grand Dame of Athens !! The royal choice!"
The Grand Bretagne is far and away the swankiest hotel in Athens! It has class and excellent service !!! Rooms are very nice and many have an unbelievable view of the Acropolis . Lobby is bar is super old school and classy Rooftop pool is very fun , with a bar and grill up top also And, they have a second very classy nighttime Bar and Restaurant on the roof also And a Cigar Lounge It's everything you could ask for if you want the best!!!
"good service, concierge and location."
Yes, rooftop for breakfast or a cocktail is nice. Yes, location is great for tourist attractions. Pool staff was unfriendly and not helpful. Room maids were not so thorough in cleaning the room. The room itself was small and the bathroom tiny. There isnt enough counter space in there. Curtains did block out light, room was pretty quiet, a/c worked well and bed was good. Front desk staff was nice. Concierge responsive and good. Nice big lobby. Overall good hotel, a few misses away from grand.
