Avoid this hotel. If the hotel prices where at a 2 stars hotel's level it will be OK. But not for this pirces. Room was dirty, breakfast was poor. Swimming pool is not working. Wallpapers are coming daown from the wall. We have to clean the bathroom first to use it.
"Wonderful location ..."
RE: STAFF - Both Manuella and Pietra ( we think ) were both very helpful, given the circumstances. Very good location, and very good views from the outdoor patio ... Taromina is a lovely place to stay ... a lot to offer, we traveled to four different cities in Italy and this hotel, while okay, was not great.
"Hostel with no amenities and an abundance of "No""
Please do read the poor reviews of this dreadful property before booking, they are the only accurate accounting of villa riis. One must assume that the positive reviews were posted by the - quite invisible - owner, their family or friends because frankly no one save a 17 year old backpacker on his gap year through Europe would ever stay here once walking through the entrance. Rooms and all public areas are dilapidated; filthy, tiny showers encased in mould and tired mismatched brown furniture and linen unfit for a prison. We were shown- due to the frustration of countless other guests- the full range of rooms from economy to sea facing "suited" and must report they all share the same dismal qualities. But on to the "services" provided: in their description above you will see services listed such as room service - non existent, pool - unkempt, closed and filthy, tennis court - closed, also unusable, bar - absolutely non existent in fact there is no trace of a bar having ever been a feature. There is also no restaurant and on the topic of breakfast: we only take coffee in the morning but we have seen the usual continental breakfast set up. What we saw over a period of several days was atrocious: stale bread, greying yolks of boiled eggs, cereals which sat out for days and processed ham and cheese clicked from a packet. Breakfast is also entirely unattended. As coffee is not readily available you must wait for someone- anyone- to emerge to order it. We spent 10 to 20min each day running around looking for someone to bring us coffee. During our stay we witnessed several fellow "trapped" patrons (all reservations once made are absolutely non refundable) complain, scream and demand to speak with the manager/owner who was only reachable by phone and denied all requests for refund's for this dreadful "4 star" bait and switch On our 2nd night we asked for our laundry to be done; standard in even 2 star hotel. We were told they did not handle laundry. I suggested they call one of the laundry pick.up and delivery services for us in town - offering of course to pay the hotel any extra amount for the trouble - and was told "No, you will have to go do your own laundry". With that we packed a small bag for a few nights and left to check in elsewhere. Knowing we would not be refunded and not interested in engaging the clueless staff and horrid owner- life is too short - we decided to eat the cost and pay for something far better. On our return to pick up the remainder of our things the receptionist stopped to inform me that the door on my armour had fallen off its hinge while I was gone and "we leaned the broken door against the wall in your room". Hilarious! Of course it had and of course you did - God forbid you fix or at the very leasy remove the broken item. We are lucky in that we had the means to laugh and move to a proper 5 star hotel and allow Riis to keep the cost of our 6 nights. However, I cannot in good conscience allow others to waste hard earned money on what should be a special trip with these charlatans. Truly, please heed this review. There are far more charming probably less expensive b&b's and Pensiones in the area that will provide far more comfort, amenities and cleanliness. To the couple we encountered on their honeymoon who struggled through broken English to fight for a refund after sleeping in a bed covered with bugs ....this review is for you. I hope your agent was able get some of your money back.
"AVOID THIS SO CALLED 4-STAR HOTEL - BARELY TWO-STAR"
Our experience at this so-called four-star, superior, first class hotel was a huge disappointment because the literature on the internet claims one thing but what it delivers is a totally different thing altogether. The owners seem to be labouring under the delusion that you can offer four-star service with practically no staff to speak of. The so-called breakfast buffet is a very bad joke. I think that no hotelier should be allowed to make such claims of grandeur, misleading travel agents and tourists alike, and still get away with it. Someone ought to look into this and put a stop to such cheating once and for all. Mr & Mrs V. Piccinino - Malta
"Rustic charm and beautiful views gives way to wrong standard of room booked"
Staff charming apart from booking the classic room and ended up in a small room with no wifi, tv, fridge, phone. It did however have rustic charm of mould in the bathroom and dangerous plug sockets. Cleaning of rooms non existant during the stay. On mentioning the issue with the room was met with a shrug by the owner, and no apology for the state of the room but said he would look into if there are any other rooms available. When I looked on tripadviser to see if anyone else had had recent problems, said owner flipped and told us to pack our bags and leave - "I am rich man, I do not need your money. Get out know". Not the sort of action you expect although he was Italian. Cue avoidance for the day to see if things would settle down which they did - he kept out of my way and I kept out of his. Staff did not mention a change of room to me or any apology. My advice is if you stay here its a great base for exploring the town of Taormina, nice views and the pool is relaxing. But do check that they have the correct room for you. And my advice to Hotel Villa Riis is to use some of those Euros that being a rich man you must have acquired and spend some on the rooms and up the service a bit. It could be a great hotel.
