"Historic hotel, great location and very personal"
Did a stopover and thought we would experience Amsterdam by night, however we were too busy and ended up just working out of the hotel. The hotel was under some construction and generally it was good... but had expected excellent. Service was supreme, but check-out and check-in was painfully slow. If we had several days we would stay here again, but not for a single night.
"InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam"
This is a beautiful and sophisticated 5-star hotel with a high level of service and professionalism. Our room was comfortable, traditional and of classical era. Plush robes embroidered with the hotel’s crest and comfy slippers were available in the room and we gladly used them to visit and enjoy the 15 meter, indoor, heated swimming pool and Jacuzzi. Perfect location on the Amstel canal. It is close to the centre, but a long walk or short bike or taxi/tram ride to the crowed locations (we opted for the walking and a Hop On/Hop Off tour bus).
""Our third stay and NOT last""
This hotel is our favourite Amsterdam hotel, Whole experience is exactly what we look for. Amazing lobby with antique paintings and ceramics and always smiling ladies and gentlemen of Amstel hotel. We always stay in the suite with Amstel river views so we can enjoy atmosphere of this lovely city even late at night. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for US so we must enjoy it! And we do in Amstel. Breakfast room again has a old times charm and wonderful river views from every table. We are people who need perfect time as we don't have so much time so when it comes to holiday it must be perfect . This is the hotel where we get it all. Good night sleep, smiley faces, comfy bed, luxury bathroom etc. But what makes us to come back every year is people of Amstel Intercontinental! The gentleman at the concierge who knows everything about the city and is always helpful. I forgot the name but he is the face of Amstel!!!! So it will be ease to guess who he is. Than Martyna!!! Our guardian angle of Amstel hotel, who makes sure we have everything what we need and Toby from restaurant whose attentiveness made us speechless. We felt so welcomed by him and he is a real treasure. We will be back again so cant wait to see you all !!! Marketa Martin Martin Jr.
"Dreadfully overrated and disappointing"
We stayed at the Amstel after finishing a river cruise. Over 40 of us arrived to check in and the process was interminable, with only 2 desks and each check in taking an inordinate amount of time. Someone from our group complained about the delay to a cruise director who’d come with us: he simply shrugged and said that it was always like that. We went to get coffee and service was pretty much non-existent. We then were told that our room would be ready at 3.00pm and so we went off to enjoy the city. Upon our return the room still wasn’t ready and the coffee service was still terrible. When we finally got into our room someone else’s luggage was there instead of ours. Worse was to come with the evening meal in the bistro. We were with friends - service was again dreadful and the food very ordinary. Most particularly one of our number had severe food allergies and was very particular about what she could have. When her food finally arrived it contained all the things she’d asked not to have: she had to send it back and when it arrived again it was still wrong. There was not a word of apology. I have no complaints about the room in the Amstel: it was lovely. But the service was dire on just about every level. It is just not good enough for a hotel which charges this much and is meant to be 5 star. We loved Amsterdam and will return - next time to the Pulitzer.
Stayed at the Intercontinental for two nights with my wife. The hotel is situated on the Amstel river, about a 20 min walk from the museum quarter. It's 3 min walk from Weesperplein Metro station. From the airport, about 30 mins, initially on a train to Amsterdam Zuid, changing to line 51. We had booked a city view but as a Spire Elite Ambassador were upgraded to a King Executive Room River View. Ambassador benefits include noon check in and 4pm check out (both subject to availability but we checked in on arrival at 2pm and left at 4pm on check out day), fruit (an apple) and Evian water each day and a newspaper if you want it. The AMB amenity is an Amstel luggage tag. Spire Elite amenity is a choice of 600 IHG points or two free drinks at A bar. We chose the latter. This entitled us to a 150 year old anniversary Amstel special cocktail each, which was very tasty. The room itself was decorated in a traditional style, a large bed, a desk, drawers and mini bar below a TV. I liked the high ceilings and the fact that windows can be opened. We had a good view over the Amstel River. The bathroom is nice but nothing special. Water pressure was great however and the hot water really was hot. The shower - both rain and hand - was nice. Good toiletries provided with lots of towels, which I like. Service was good overall. The hotel lobby and staircase is impressive. There are jars of sweets that you can help yourself to in the lobby. The hotel is currently undergoing some external renovations on the City side but this didn't affect us during our stay. There was a wedding on our second night in the hotel which we were not informed about. The bass from the music kept me awake a bit. On check in we were offered (without asking) 4pm late check out for our day of departure which we accepted and confirmed all OK. However, we received a call on day of departure at 1.30pm asking what time we were checking out. Although the hotel said it was OK, it was a bit annoying and I'm not sure why this wasn't put in the hotel system. Nevertheless, we really enjoyed our stay. We didn't have breakfast at the hotel as we were room only but it is available for €36.50 pp walk up rate. I had read reviews that the restaurant was great but we had much more reasonably priced breakfasts close by the hotel. I recommend staying at the Amstel.
