"If you want to recharge in peace, you got it"
Set in thick jungle, this place has a natural feel to it. All the staff are extremely courteous, naturally friendly and well trained, without exception. There is an air of contentment about the place. The treatments (massages etc) are among the best I've experienced anywhere. Given the size of the place, they've managed to pull off a feeling of "small and exclusive". The food, generally speaking, is very good- especially the vegetarian options, although for the price, I'd say it could do with tweaking slightly. The guests are generally of a higher calibre than, say, your average resort. They seem to range from yoga bunnies to London luvvies -à la Absolutely Fabulous- to solo travellers clearly in need of some down time. Only downsides: the hillside rooms could do with better privacy- there was a path outside mine; beach: zero swimming, basically, but there's not a lot that can be done about that. There's also building work going on on the plot of land next to it, which disturbed the peace a bit. The only other negative aspect is that even here, they continue to subscribe to the notion of "detox", which, despite being debunked and proven as nonsense-medically speaking- continues to act as a powerful marketing ploy. I signed up for the 3 day "detox" package just to avoid alcohol, caffeine and meat, but you can do that anywhere of course. All in all a very good experience; it aint cheap, but if you want to shut off from the world and recharge, this is the best you're going to find on Samui. I would definitely go back.
This was my second visit to Kamalaya, I first visited in August 2016, and I was worried that the second visit might not be as amazing as the first. But I wasn't disappointed. Kamalaya is a haven of calm and tranquility. It doesn't matter how many people are there, it never feels crowded. I had a sea view villa and it was incredible. I also had the five day detox and the treatments are beyond compare. Everything about Kamalaya is well executed without feeling stiff or that they are just delivering an over rehearsed product. It all feels like they genuinely care. I love it here and will be back.
"Tropical paradise "
This is my 2nd visit to this beautiful , well run, friendly retreat. I chose to stay in the Hillside Seaview room which has a balcony and overlooks the top of the trees out to sea. The sunsets are mesmerising. There is plenty of room with a king size bed and a decent bathroom. The villas are massive and if you're a solo traveller it's probably more than you need. I am here on the Relax and Renew package that includes all meals . Not including alcohol or imported drinks thou but you won't miss them I promise! There is an activity schedule each week and plenty to do , yoga, pilates, gum.classes, qi gong, meditation. Lots of talks about health and well being. There is almost too much to do ! It's perfect for solo travellers looking to get away and chill out. You can do as much or aa little. There is a new lap pool perched high in the hills with two levels of a well equipped gym. A new steam cavern and cold plunge pool too. The spa treatments are divine. All the therapists are well trained and service quality is second to none. The meals are amazing and plenty on the menu to choose from so it doesn't get boring. The restaurant staff are all wonderful and anticipate your needs. Menu is divided into detox and a la carte. You can choose from either. I love it here and I heard 50% of their guests are return guests. Kamalaya is very green and blends in with its natural surroundings. It's understated luxury.
"Can't beat it for feeling good about yourself!"
Stayed here for 2 weeks on 2 back to back programs - embracing change and ideal weight. Many of the guests were on the detox program, some on a la carte, and loads were repeat visitors. The friends I made there and I have vowed to return next year already. Most people seem to be there for 7-14 days, a handful were there for 3-6 week stays. I felt 2 weeks was just right. As it was my first visit I opted for the cheapest room - a kingsize hillside garden view (room 16). It was a short walk up the hill from the reception/restaurant/gift shop, and just around the corner from the lap pool and gym. Although the room itself was comfortable with the amenities you need, it was very dark due to its position on the hill, overlooking lots of greenery and a massive boulder on the balcony. It meant I didn't wake to the sun and instead had to set my alarm. Next time I will ask for a seaview hillside room which is brighter. My room had an inside shower, toilet and basin, as well as an outside shower (one temperature so never used it). The stone floor in the bathroom area was super slippery - something the management really needs to sort out as putting ugly anti-slip mats down everywhere somewhat takes away from the aesthetic! The bed was very comfy. I didn't chose to order room service at any point as there wasn't anywhere nice to have it - my room had a chair/desk, and on the dark balcony was a set of chairs/table but the view wasn't great, being right on the pathway that people took. The service is outstanding with so many knowledgable, friendly and caring staff everywhere you turn. Thailand is the land of smiles, and they all seem to be at Kamalaya! The quality of the treatments is exceptional, with real care taken to give the right advice and support for each individual. The effort that goes into your care during a 1-2 week program far out-weighs the attention you get back at home from your doctor. There are lots of programs on offer, to help support all sorts of requirements. The guests are as supportive of each other and really help it a pleasurable stay. Obviously the grounds and location are gorgeous - there's almost no point in calling that detail out! Can't wait to go back.
The place is suitable for relaxing in a dynamic way! It is a shelter for active people who need to boost themselves mentally and physically. The rooms vary but the other facilities are offering high standards and quality.
