"Close to perfect, but not yet there"
Likes: friendly staff, excellent breakfast, one of the best pools I have ever come across in a hotel, very good Internet access. So this could have been a 5/5 review, but it isn't for three reasons. Firstly, the rooms don't feature a coffee maker. Yes, there is a kettle and Nescafé instant coffee is provided, but that's a far cry from a genuine cup of coffee. So I decided to have my coffees in the Circle restaurant. It turned out that most of my cappuccinos were lukewarm, and they were all served with a nice dose of coffee on the plate. In addition to these coffee-related misses, there's the airport transfer. Considering the huge size of this hotel and the number of international travelers, I would expect a complimentary shuttle service with a minivan. Instead, a "limo" service is provided, which is ridiculously expensive. More than PHP 2500 for less than 20 minutes in a normal car is pretty insane, more than PHP 3500 for the same journey in a VW Passat is way out. All in all, this could easily have been a 5/5 rating, if they sort out their coffee and transportation-related issues.
"Timeless Classic. Manila's original 5 star hotel"
While there are several luxury hotels that have mushroomed in that last 5 years such as Resorts World, Nobu Hotel, Shangri-La at the Fort, and City of Dreams etc. I still managed to completely enjoy our stay here. I had my wedding reception at the Quezon ballroom 10 years ago and now, my sister-in-law just got married at the Rizal ballroom earlier this month. Flying from California, I was very excited to stay at Shangri-la and see how their services stacked up since I was last here. It's still the same attentive, wonderful, and caring staff. While many would say "why didn't they improve'" I'm sure they did but in the world of hospitality, consistency is a major key to success and Shang Makati will always be successful. Because of the wedding, we managed to get the rate of P6,800 /night with breakfast buffet. We stayed in Shang for 5d/4n and loved every minute of it. My 3 year old daughter loved the room and was spoiled with the daily breakfast. While the room is definitely showing its age especially with the Mactan suite, it's still a 5 star hotel in every angle. Every staff that we came across with, from the concierge, parking, security, housekeeping, circles staff, lobby lounge, spa, and shang palace made us feel welcomed and loved. They truly made sure you are pampered while you're their guest. Until our next trip to Manila, which seems to be like every 5 years and I hope sooner this time around, I will continue to book my stay in Shang Makati.
I've been staying here since 2006 since I first started traveling with my parents who started a business in the Philippines and this place never disappoints. The prices are very affordable since they have lots of online deals. They even had the Philippine symphony playing during breakfast buffet on New Years' Day. I thought it was just the house speakers until I looked up from my plate to be pleasantly surprised by a full blown orchestra playing on New Year's day. Total class one would expect from the Shang. Conveniently located in Makati next to Glorietta and Greenbelt malls to shop and dine as well as check out the Ayala Museum.
"Nice Hotel for Staycation"
We stayed here to celebrate our anniversary and it was conveniently the venue for a friend's wedding reception. The room was quite small, old but still maintained. Sometimes, however, you get to hear noise from other rooms or outside the hallway like the slamming of the door or conversations from an adjacent room. The hotel is near the mall so you can go back and forth as you please. In-room dining was also generous in their serving size so what my husband and I ordered was more than enough for us.
"Business prior to holiday"
Hotel is superb, no expense spared on fittings and decor. However do not fall for the upgrade offered on checking supposedly superior room , it’s not. Use of executive suite on 24th floor, pretty good, free mini bar, not including refills. The breakfasts are truly amazing. There is no choice that is not covered, unlike the Lind Boracay where we are staying now for the holiday part of the trip. Watch out for the dodgy taxis that ply from shangrila, standards appalling. Two separate taxi journeys ended with breakdowns, the cars involved would not be allowed on the road in UK. Resorted to hiring hotel car and driver for 2 hour tour during which all the time bar 20 minutes spent in traffic jam as driver took wrong route.
