"Third time in Bruges, second stay at this beautiful hotel!"
I am obsessed with Bruges and this hotel. We found ourselves in Europe over Christmas so we visited Bruges to see it in the winter time and it did not disappoint! I've stayed here before, and the room I had this time was much better - we had a canal view and were on level 1. We had a really quiet room with no one else around and two big windows looking straight onto the canal (last time, I had the room with the two small round windows on the top floor). The view was better this time, although the rooms at the top have the beautiful wooden beams that add so much character. The breakfast is great too and of course you should get there early to sit at one of the tables at the windows! The staff are so friendly and always helpful. The location is a little further from the main cluster of hotels near the 2be beer wall in Bruges however its such a short walk to the main square that it really doesn't matter. This hotel is also located on one of the more beautiful canals in my opinion, and you can easily walk further to explore the less touristy parts of Bruges. Wake up early to see Bruges in the early morning - you won't be disappointed!
Absolutely lovely hotel in a great location with very helpful staff. Hotel is 5 old buildings combined, so expect some differences throughout the hotel and several staircases (there is a lift as well). We had two rooms on the second floor overlooking the canal - both a good size and nicely decorated. Comfortable beds and good bathrooms. Breakfast was great, with plenty of options to choose from. Although dinner is not offered, there are hundreds of restaurants within a short walk. Having stayed in Bruges a couple of times before, I would say this is the best location we have stayed in - a 3 or 4 minute walk from the Markt, so close enough to the main areas, but in a fairly quiet location. Would highly recommend.
"Historic hotel, lovely room, great location"
We stayed in Room 1 over Christmas and it was just lovely. The hotel is old and historic which is exactly what we wanted in a city like Brugge! Our room overlooked a canal and the room had big windows that could be opened to enjoy it. Our room was at the back of the hotel next to another set of doors on the canal side. Felt like a private entrance! We never had to walk through the rest of the hotel if we didn't want to. The bathroom was huge with wonderful shuttered windows. The tub/shower combo was only semi enclosed with glass so showering leaves you quite exposed. This was not a big deal, though. The bed was large (King) and very comfortable - my husband thought it was the most comfortable bed we had in 2.5 weeks in Europe. Our interaction with the staff was great, especially Celine who was very friendly and helpful with dinner reservations. The hotel is a short walk to the main square and there is a bus stop just outside that takes you to/from the train station or around the city (we only used it for the station). Tip: Don't make our mistake and go to the other Martin's hotel in town. There are two! We would definitely stay here again.
"Great location, unique rooms"
Booked this hotel based on the generally good reviews and the great location. It's within a few minutes walk to the main square, so perfectly situated for a short break in Bruges. We paid for 3 days of the hotel parking which we think is worth the hassle and for peace of mind. It's a short walk to the hotel, so we parked next to the hotel to unload, before moving the car to the underground carpark. Our room is unique, which I gather from the reviews, most of the rooms are, because of the interesting history of the buildings. The following comments may only apply to our room, and I gather also that rooms with canal views have better reviews, and they are more expensive. Our room used to be the old lounge, and so is a separate building from the main building. Access is via a narrow wooden staircase to the room. The room is spacious, with a fireplace, and a separate large bathroom with his and hers sinks. The are radiators in the room, in the hallway and at the bottom of the stairs, and seemed to be on 24/7. We had to turn it down to the minimum, and had to turn on the air conditioning to cool the room down. Unfortunately, that may have triggered some air flow exchanges that brought in smell of sewage that lingered on for a while even when the air conditioner was turned off. The cleaner was very helpful and was very generous with the air freshener which did improve the smell somewhat. We wondered if the smell was coming from downstairs which is a garage where the bins were kept. This is also another source of noise, as the bin men would come early in the morning, and we were woken up every morning when the garage door opens, and the bins were moved (our bed was literally above the garage door!). Another source of noise was the leaking taps in the bath - they don't turn off. Thankfully it was less audible as there was an extra door between the bathroom and the bedroom. The stairs leading to our bedroom was pitched dark, and so we rely on the lights, but the light goes off spontaneously after a moment. If you're mid-flight of stairs, then you're in darkness!! Also, it was so dark, you can't see where the light switch was! We mentioned to the receptionist who took notes down, and admitted that they rely on guests to report issues to them. I suggested they could put a luminous sticker strip on the light switches so people know where they are in the dark. We included breakfast in our stay, which is worth doing. Good range of hot and cold selections, with sparkling cava! The breakfast was enjoyable. The toiletries were displayed by each sink, so we had 4 shower caps (!!), 2 vanity packs, 2 shampoos, and 4 bars of soap. The shower gel was via a wall dispenser. There were no hair conditioner. There is a minibar in the room, kettle, and tea and coffee sachets. There is no restaurant on site, but there are plenty of eating options and restaurants in Burges. Drinks can be served 24/7 by the reception. Overall, it's a nice hotel, but from the other reviews, we could recommend paying for a room with a canal view, as they seem to have better reviews.
"A well situated hotel"
Martin's Relais is an extremely pleasant hotel. Our room overlooked the canal . The hotel is ideally situated perhaps a ten minute stroll to the main square. Whilst there is a very good breakfast, the hotel does not have a restaurant catering for other meals but there is a very nice bar for a drink prior to going out to dine. The rooms are very comfortable with the loo separate from the bathroom-always a plus point for me.The hotel has parking a few streets away. The staff are very welcoming and friendly. All in all I can strongly recommend it.
