"Hotel with potential let down by poor management"
We stayed at the Melia in Berlin for 3 nights to celebrate my father in laws birthday. There were 4 of us in total, 2 per room and we had a totally different experience to my in laws. We arrived at 2pm, 1 hour before check in time. We spoke to reception who explained our room was not available and official check in was at 3pm. This was no problem and the lovely man on reception arranged for our bags to be stored to allow us 1 hour to get food and explore locally. At this while we were still at reception he phoned housekeeping and asked them to prioritise our room to be ready for check in. My husband and I had also flown to surprise my father in law for his birthday, we explained this to the reception. During this time he made another phone call, obviously sorting something for his birthday as we understand he said his age on the phone. He explained that this has been put down for our room and was ensuring it was moved to the correct room. He also said another room would be available quicker but "it is not as good a room" and "will be further away from your parents". As he left us completely under the impression that our room would be ready at check in, we said it was no problem to wait until 3pm especially given the above. We then came back to the hotel at 3pm to be told our room was still not ready. We were given our bags and got a drink in the hotel bar. After we asked again at 3.30pm my husband went to the reception again and our room was still not ready. During this time we were also unable to use the bathroom as a room key was required, which we were not told and had to then ask for. We finally got our room key at 3.50. At this time we asked if due to the delay and having paid for the room for 1 hour which we had been able to access it would the hotel be able to cover the 1 large and the 1 small beer we had will waiting. The response was no as we refused another room offered....given the above I think anyone would have. Then after we finally get to our room and start having a nap ( we had been up since before 5am) we are disturbed twice, once the check the mini bar...we had been in the room for 10 minutes. Then once with a bottle of cava, obviously for my father in law but delivered to the wrong room even though we stated this clearly at check in. Also this hotel staff member came into the room even though we asked them to wait twice as were both asleep in bed. During our stay our parents were given complimentary water bottles in their room, we weren't. We were also not given the form to full in to get 2 for 1 breakfast or told about this, our parents were though. We also had two single beds pushed together and the hotel did not even bother to put a double duvet cover and join the beds in anyway to make a double like most hotels would. In summary nice reception staff, comfortable beds and great location but would not stay here or recommend based on apparent poor management.
"Excellent hotel and location."
Great hotel, very nice, very clean, helpful staff and free wifi was good. Location is excellent, right next to Friedrichstrasse train station. Breakfast was great but a bit busy. Definitely would recommend this hotel.

"OurHome Away from Home in Berlin"
We have been staying at Melia Berlin the past 2 visits to see our daughter who has been dancing at Friedreichstatd Palast for the past 6 years. Staff are friendly and do a great job of looking after your needs, especially in The Level lounge. Internet access from our room was just OK - not particularly speedy but it worked. Beds are comfortable enough but I do recommend bringing your own pillow or picking something from the pillow menu as I have not found any of the pillows comfortable over the past 2 visits. The location is great for taking in shows at the Palast (200m away) and is also terrific for exploring Berlin in general as the best attractions are all within walking distance. For those that are not, the LRT and subway system is just a couple minutes walk away. When we next venture to Berlin, I am sure we will look into booking at Melia again.
