We booked very last minute as our Whitsunday trip was cancelled due to cyclone Debbie. Great room, lovely lobby and bar. Plenty of small eateries nearby and opposite Albert Park, which still had all the Grand Prix track stuff up. We walked into Melbourne from here, about 20 minutes and to St Kilda pier to see the penguins. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. For us the location was excellent being outside the main city.
We had 2 nights here. The hotel foyer has obviously been renovated somewhat recently, but they need to do more. I'm not sure about how centrally the hotel is located - apart from being opposite Albert Park. Room was roomy. It had a 2 seater lounge. It was clean, as was the bathroom. We had a view out across Albert Park which was lovely. We didn't hear much noise from other hotel guests. Breakfast was fantastic.
"Not a 4 star hotel standard"
The room was very disappointing - definitely not 4 stars. The bathroom grout was blackened & grubby. The shower head squirted water out all over the roof and walls. The fridge cupboard door was hanging off one hinge. There was thick dust in and around the couch. And the next morning there were men power-hosing the artificial turf right outside our window! They were super noisy and chunks of mud etc flew up all over our windows. I have photos of all of these issues, if the Mercure would be interested in seeing them.
"Just a little tired"
The Mercure and Pullman hotels are co-located right over the road from Albert Park. Tram into town (about 3 km) is close by, but nearby cafes and shops are sparse. Checkin was good, lovely people at the desk and conceirge. The Mercure room is a little tired - scratched furniture, marked carpets and chair, mismatched bathroom tiles, poor water pressure, ridge up the middle of the bed. It was cleaned and serviced well though, the room service staff did an excellent job. My room was on the 5th floor towards the back, so it was fairly bright and quiet, as opposed to the rooms closer to the front which seem to be closer to the busy Queens road and more surrounded by adjacent buildings. There were a couple of conferences on, so the queue at the restaurant for breakfast was considerable.
My wife and I stayed a night with friends at the Mercure. We found the staff very friendly, from the people at the bar and the checkin checkout staff and the guys at the Breakfast restaurant. Even though I was upgrade to a suit room it was average. This was a little disappointing, and was not up to the Mercure standard and believe me I have stayed in a lot of Mercure's all over the world.
