This was our 2nd visit to the Moana and this time we booked a room in the tower, instead of a historic room. The tower rooms all have balconies and we could see the sea, even though we booked a city view. Loved the room -spacious and modern. Thanks to the staff for the birthday cake and balloons they left in our room - my husband was celebrating his 7Oth birthday!
"Great Hawaiian Hotel"
When I lived in Hawaii, I would visit the Surfrider for events, and it was great. Since I no longer live there, I have stayed several times, and the most recent stay was the best. The hotel itself is classic - old Hawaii feel, open, breezy, lots of places to hang out. The rooms in the older part of the hotel might be small for some, but we loved them, and they are all updated. The staff is great, always trying to help. The location is great for getting around Waikiki, Honolulu, and the rest of the island. Beach is right there and awesome. Spa was great, very accomodating. The Club is in a great location and is a great benefit. There are lots of options in Waikiki, and this one should be at the top of your list. No hassles, very relaxing, and fun.
"Beautiful architecture and convenient location. Rooms ok."
I was slightly disappointed in the Moana Surfrider. It just felt cramped. I don't mean the room. The entire property. There was barely any beach and the beach lounge had tables jammed all over. The staff was hit and miss. One wonderful waitress pointed us to some wonderful local fare...Side Street, but another one just went through the motions, barely. One night the kids were loud and security came up and told us to quiet down or " things would get ugly." I was stunned. Reported to management and she apologized and comped us two days at the Beach Club which gave us complementary breakfast and a nice room to chill. The last day my daughter cut her foot on broken glass when packing to leave. The thing is...we didn't break any glass during our stay. I assume housekeeping did but it was weird since we were in the room for 5 days. Management got her a band-aid and neosporin but still. You are a housekeeper and broke something, clean it up thoroughly. We travelled with a family of five, kids 17,15,11. I would not return again. I think this motel would be better suited for couples than families. We did have an enjoyable time but for the money I will stay elsewhere next time.
"Starwood Preferred guests are NOT so preferred."
As a 'preferred' guest for the last 20 years, we were assigned a room in the historic wing. I'm do not consider myself a person that's interested in a lot of historic things and do not care for the accompanying 'historic' smell (musty). I was very much looking forward to sitting on the lanai and looking out at the ocean. When I entered my "preferred" room I had no lanai, just a square window in the corner of the room. If I want to look out the window I would have to squeeze by the desk and lean over a built-in shelf. When I inquired for a room in the tower, I was told they were sold out, except for OF penthouse rooms and I do not have an extra $300/night in my budget to swing this luxury. This seems kind of ridiculous since I booked so long ago (6 months ago!). Unless all "tower" rooms were completely booked at the time I made my reservation; it would seem that I should have been given a better room. Booking in advance with a "preferred" status didn't seem to have gotten me much compared to any other guest off the street. Please note I made this reservations 6 months ago!
This hotel is the oldest hotel in the city. It is updated and very comfortable. It has a grand staircase in the entrance and we have seen brides being photographed on it several times daily. Apparently this is a destination wedding venue. The outside of the hotel has porches with comfortable rocking chairs overlooking the street. It is great to sit there and people watch. The back of the hotel is also beautiful with big, old trees framing the entrance to the hotel decks on one side and the pool and ocean on the outside. It is a truly beautiful hotel both inside and out. When we arrived and checked our vehicle, we received leis and felt welcomed to Hawaii. The bed in our room is comfortable. The food in the restaurant is very good.
