"Fabulous property, shame about the staff!!"
Let's start with the positives. This hotel is in a fabulous location, is spotless, the rooms are great and breakfast delicious with so much choice. Now for the negatives. Alarm bells should have been ringing from the moment we telephoned to ask a couple of questions about facilities etc before making our reservation. Getting information from the lady who answered the phone (lady on reception with long dark hair we later discovered, as she was exactly the same when we arrived) was like pulling teeth. Everything we asked was answered with one word, no information was volunteered and she generally made us feel as though we were being a complete nuisance. This continued upon our arrival and throughout our stay. The bar never opened once during our 2 night stay and both nights we enquired at reception. The first night we were informed it would be open tomorrow but when tomorrow came it was apparently closed due to staff holidays! On the second evening we were told someone could grab us a couple of beers but not what we wanted and anyway we could get those ourselves from the minibar. The same goes for the restaurant, closed both nights. Basically once breakfast was over at 10 (on the dot, by 10.10 all trace of any food & drink had disappeared) the hotel was soulless and you got the impression the staff's mission was to get rid of all guests. It's a real shame as this place could so easily be perfect. If the staff took pride in their jobs and smiled a bit, we'd definitely put it on our list to return to. As it is we won't go back and really this place should market itself as a B&B.
"Excellent stay again!! at the Montanus"
We stayed at the Montanus for 4 nights and again the service was excellent. We stayed in the Garden room which was lovely and quiet. We had a little problem with our fridge. Kathleem could not have provided better service she was excellent. I cannot fault this hotel and would only stay here when we return to Montanus as you are given such a warm welcome by the staff.
"Good location with a touch of elegance"
We were impressed with the room's size. The bathroom was huge, modern, and fully equipped. The room itself featured large windows, and was also spacious. The property is on a quiet residential street. It comprises 24 guest rooms in two buildings. The staff and service were great. I would have rated this a top score except for the bedding and bed. For a quality hotel like this the mattress should have been replaced several years ago and the sheets can be best described as a "scratchy" material. Because of the price and offerings at the hotel breakfast we opted to breakfast at a wonderful cafe/patisserie nearby.
We stayed just before Christmas in a garden room, which was away from the main hotel overlooking a small courtyard and garden. The rooms were quite small but perfectly formed and very cosy. Being away from the hotel and street they were probably a little quieter. The hotel is approximately a ten minute meander to Belfort but I do think it is much quieter than staying closer to the attractions and the walk did not detract from the stay in any way. I would recommend this hotel to anyone coming to Bruges. There is also a large car park in the road behind the hotel for anyone driving in.
We stayed here for 3 nights in June, it is a nice hotel but a little dated. The service was good. Although we didn't have breakfast I noticed when we returned home that we had been charged and the hotel was quick to refund the money. It was a 10minute walk to the center of Bruges which was lovely st that time of the year. Beautiful buildings and scenery to look at. We stayed in a room out the back and found it very peaceful. Fantastic shower and a nice area to sit outside in the sun.
