"Be ready to feel like sleeping in the corridor"
I stayed at this hotel for its location and reasonable rates. However, it is worth thinking twice before booking it. Despite the cool design and details, you will find some that are rather tired (eg, toilet becoming detached from wall, gap in bedroom window leaving noise and air come through, tv not having sound and remote not responding, blocked safe, etc.). Also, the pressure of water in my room’s shower was relatively low, which meant investing some extra time in the shower... By the way, be aware the shower is next to the bed inside the room, where the sole separation is a fabric curtain. Maybe I was just unlucky with the room I got... Considering the main facilities, breakfast is good, gym a bit limited, staff are so helpful (with the exception of the Customer Relations Manager, who seems to have a quite narrow perspective in terms of customer service, disagreeing to provide a second laundry voucher despite staying at the hotel of 12 nights - they provide one for every 6 nights stay), and You are likely to find some miniture insects flying around the bathroom area in the room. Next time I visit Joburg, I’ll probably stay in Sandton. If I stay in Melrose Arch, I’ll go to the African Pride, where I guess you get mote value for your money.
"Very good option for a few days in Johannesburg"
We stayed here last year, and booked it again this year. It's a great option for us to end our African safari with a few relaxing days in Johannesburg. We arranged an airport pick up from the hotel (590 rand, went very smoothly) but took an Uber back for 230 rand. We just had a standard room. All good amenities. We had room service a few times, which was very good, We had a few issues last year, but none this year. Reasonable prices for Australians. We had fantastic cocktails in the bar, the bar staff were VERY good. The Melrose Arch area is very safe, with enough shops and restaurants to keep you busy for a few days. We didn't bother with the breakfast at the hotel, the nearby PAUL opened at 7am each day, with fantastic food and great prices (for Australians). I do think the quoted 650 rand to extend your check out from 11am to 1pm is over priced. After 1pm, it's a full day rate. Housekeeping didn't service our room the first time (I had to call), then I booked a clean for between 12-2pm for the next day and they came at 9.30am. Staff were nice, though. It's a great option. Recommended.
"Good location and beautiful hotel"
This hotel has amazing decor and wonderful service. It was close to a mall and lots of really nice eating places. The breakfast buffet at the hotel is great with lots of variety! There is currently construction across the street, but it doesn't interfere with the boutique experience at this hotel.
"Great location, friendly and efficient check-in, very poor wi-fi, a bit noisy"
This was my second stay. The room (447 - a standard room) was a good size and well maintained. Decent shower and functional work desk. Room amenities (instant coffee/tea, kettle, a small pack of tissues, small shower soaps etc) all as expected. The check-in was friendly and efficient. Melrose Arch is definitely the place to stay in Jo'burg and I think this hotel is reasonably priced and worth considering for that reason alone. Two major issues: 1. Very crappy internet, extremely slow and barely usable, there is no excuse for that in this location. When I checked in I was told that the wifi had been recently upgraded but if this is the improved version it must have been really terrible previously. I have a premium card so I am supposed to get better wifi but this was horrible. 2. The hotel is a bit noisy when people are moving around or talking - I didn't hear traffic but I heard a lot of voices and doors opening and closing, much more than I would expect and quite disturbing if you are trying to rest or work.
Stayed for 2 nights on a Gate 1 tour. The hotel is situated in a secure area of Johannesburg with terrific restaurants & shopping close by. Decor could be described as funky but now becoming a bit dated & I felt like Alice in Wonderland sitting in tall chairs at breakfast! Rooms are quite small but comfortable. We were disappointed that there was nowhere at all that we could hang a few washed undies - a necessity when you're constantly on the move! We did have laundry done - a bit expensive but came back beautifully folded & ready to wear. We didn't like the shower being part of the bedroom. Not a problem for my husband & myself but was difficult for the people on our tour travelling with friends. Plenty of choices in the breakfast buffet but like others, we had to wait for tea or coffee. Missed out altogether one morning as we ran out of time! All up, though we'd definitely think about staying here again.
