We only enjoyed a few nights in Jo'burg, but the location of this hotel was superb. Being right in the middle of an upscale shopping district with multiple dining options nearby was ideal and meant no need to take the car every time we went out. The hotel itself is pretty standard and the interior a bit wild (found this to be true throughout SA). We chose not to include breakfast and this was great, because we got to go to "Paul" for breakfast (walking distance) every morning and enjoy some of their wonderful breakfast items! Would recommend this hotel for convenience, location and a very safe environment with tons of shopping and dining options within walking distance!
"Nice hotel but noisy"
This was a nice hotel but it was very noisy - I think there was a business event on while I was staying there. I overlooked the pool and it was loud until 11pm. The food was nice but I felt the options rather limited. I found it a little odd the bathroom was in the bedroom with no wall dividing the two and no fan in the loo so no ventilation. Meant the bedroom got a bit steamy if you had a hot shower and if you opened the window it was rather noisy. Breakfast was good - continental, local or hot options and an egg station. The service throughout the hotel was pretty good - everyone was really friendly. However, I did ask for another bottle of water at reception that never appeared and there wasn't a mini bar with any extra drinks/snacks so I had to go down to the main bar to get water on a Friday night when it was really busy with party-goers. I had a pre-paid booking with work but this somehow went wrong and it wasn't explained to me, rather just added an extra night to my bill at the end of the stay which I didn't notice until I got home so was then hard to rectify. Location is really nice, lots of nice restaurants and shopping, felt really safe.
"Great hotel close to shopping, restaurants and galleries"
We enjoyed our stay at Protea Fire and Ice. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable and treated us like family. Our room was clean, roomy and had a view over the courtyard and pool. Breakfast was buffet and offered a great variety of choices, both hot and cold. The staff in the restaurant remembered our preferences for coffee each day we were there - they paid attention to detail. The hotel is in a great location in Melrose Arch Precinct, close to shopping and restaurants. The area is clean and employs many streets designed for walking only.
"Great hotel But..."
Great stay at this hotel, the staff is really nice, the accomodations are nice. But, The swimming pool is really tiny and, there is no separation between the bathroom and the bedroom. Thus, it is really uncomfortable to go to this hotel with a friend...
"Tired, overrated hotel"
I spent 2 nights at this hotel at the end of my trip to South Africa. At check in, staff weren't friendly or helpful, infant during my whole stay, not once did front desk staff smile or acknowledge me when i walked past. When I walked into my room I was excited by the decor, it is definitely fun and cool. However the location of the shower and bathroom in the room isn't ideal if travelling with other people. There is a sheer white curtain to give you "some" privacy. However this curtain does not pull across the entire room and its so sheer that you can see the outline of someone. Fortunately the toilet is in its own room. While the decor of the room was cool, it was very tired and not very well maintained. Furniture in the room was showing it's age, there was scratches and dents everywhere. Also the cleanliness was a concern! The first room I was allocated had hair hanging out of the shower head. I also didn't feel too safe in the first room as it was on the 1st level looking right out on the street front. I wanted to be a bit higher up to feel safer and not facing the street front. When I asked to move rooms I was rudely told the hotel is fully booked and i'd need to stay in my room. When I questioned that, the receptionist said she would move me to the other side but on the same level. Her tone of voice made it out to be such big drama. Room service was fine, there is a great option of food available. However with options like UberEats out there, I'd probably avoid room service at this hotel if i ever returned. Plus the prices were quite high compared to other restaurants in the area that were on UberEats. The milkshakes were great, slightly over rated but still fun. Also, this hotel seems to stay in business thanks to all the Emirates cabin crew there. The lobby was always full of crew checking in/out. One thing i found bizarre was whenever I called up for room service, the first question asked was "Are you Emirates cabin crew'" Each time I said no, but i wonder if i said yes would that meant I'd have gotten a discount' Potentially the hotel needs to look into this! Also, it's annoying being constantly asked are you Emirates Cabin Crew!
