"Renaissance - out of the city, but close enough"
Context: We are staying for 3 nights as part of our RTW trip. Swiss is our first stop and we picked Renaissance as our home base. We booked through our bank travel portal, using our bank point. This is similar to booking through an OTA (Online Travel Agency) such as Orbitz or Expedia. We booked the Executive Suite room. Room: Very large for any standard. For Zurich standard, the room is very spacious. There are separate living room with comfortable sofa bed, a bathroom, with separate walk in shower, tub, and commode room. The living room has a small dining table, minibar, Nespresso, TV cabinet etc. The room also has motorized shutters on the windows. The windows themselves are floor to ceiling, so we can let in as much sunlight, or we can darken it as we please using the shutters. Breakfast and Executive lounge: Good selection all around. American, Continental and some Asian options are present, including all kinds of bread and pastry. Executive lounge unfortunately do not open on weekends, which is disappointing. It is also rather small in size for a Renaissance. The only time we were there, it was quite crowded. Location: Not within downtown Zurich, but Zurich is quite compact, and there is a tram line almost just across, so with Zurich card or Swiss rail pass, taking the tram to the main station is a breeze. From the main station, there are trains to all parts of Switzerland and Europe. There is a Co-Op nearby for any necessities. Staff: Great all around. Very courteous, and apologetic with the executive lounge situation. The only blemish is that we were not acknowledged as Marriott Gold members. Maybe because we booked through an OTA but we did have our loyalty program conveyed in the reservation. I emailed with the front desk manager prior to arrival asking for the sofa bed to be setup, and it was setup when we arrived. Overall: We were quite happy with the stay. The first time we went to Switzerland, we stayed at Renaissance Luzerne. We had an amazing experience there so we wanted to stay with Renaissance brand and we were not disappointed.
How can this be 5star. Very disappointing experience. At check-in june 22 at 13pm only two staff. Long waiting time. Room very small (3star) including bathroom. We did ask for a change and when moving it was about the same size (guess 21m2). As one review mentioned already. No frills, no charm, big hotel, Did not feel clean (I just can agree). The negative experience includes also the Service. I am working for 30 years in tourism and I am ashamed what quality we offer in Zurich. Also if I compare rates - very high june 21 to june 25. The night 21 june we stayed at the Sheraton West about 3 minutes from Renaissance. Only 4 star but much better then Renaissance. Very disappointed.
"Very nice hotel with great views and a good restaurant"
A nice surprise in Hardbrücke district. A tower hotel, with a very big room, plently of light, great views over Zurich and the Prime Tower -the highest building in Switzerland, Big, comfortable bed. Nice, large bathroom with all commodities. Quality restaurant with fine food, particularly the beef dishes which are varied and good quality. Pay attention, sometimes they forget the "chimichurri" coming along with the beef. Excellent side-dish of truffle risotto. Very good Austrian wine combining perfectly with the meat. Good coffee and very average, industrial, not-chilled limoncello.
The rooms have been updated and were fine. It's located near the tram. Easy to get around in Zurich and shopping, restaurants, and places to see. It is about 15 minutes to the airport and will cost about 60 Euros. The bar at the Renaissance was OK, not the best I've been to, but OK.
No frills, no charm, big hotel in West Zurich. Frugal w/ amenities. Didn't feel clean. Easy transportation into heart of town. A few blocks away from beer garden. Helpful concierge. Wouldn't stay there again given all the options.
