"Wow! Shangri-la Bangkok!"
Since returning from our 4 country Asia trip, we cannot stop talking about Shangri-la Bangkok! This hotel just wowed us from the first day we checked in and throughout our stay. The hotel limousine picked us up from the airport, and was told to look for the gentleman in the red jacket. He was so easy to spot in the group of 75+ waiting for arrivals. He quickly took our luggage and called the limo and within minutes picked up by hotel Mercedes Benz. Waiting in the car was chilled bottled water in thai decorated bags and lavender scented cold towels. The driver (30yrs with Shangri-la!) informed us the car was equipped with wifi and if he can play some relaxing music for the drive. Wow... When we arrived we were greeted by many shangri-la staff all well dressed, smiling, bowing with their hands cupped together. We were handed fresh flowers and whisked immediately into the lobby. Greeted by our hotel assistant and informed he would escort us up to our executive suite (#2401) and check us in personally! Wow... The suite was BEAUTIFUL. Living Room and Bedroom both with view of Bangkok. Room was well stocked with L'Occitane toiletries, vanity, and every detail provided. Kreuig Coffee/pods, Hot Water, Tea Pot/cups, 6 cans of variety of loose tea leaves, and fully stocked fridge with snacks. Room included a bowl of fresh tropical fruit daily, with a little guide outlining each fruit with plates, fork, knife, and napkins. The Host thoroughly welcomed, introduced, and gave us an overview of the resort. Answered all our questions and said just pick up your phone and press "0" for anything. We LOVE the Horizon Lounge. The staff was so helpful, informative, and personable. Window view of Bangkok and the river were spectacular from the lounge. The food and drinks were excellent. The staff remembered our beverage selections and were quick to serve us. All of Shangri-la staff would smile, cup their hands and bow when they face us, so contagious we too were smiling and returning the same gesture. Next stop, Chi Spa for a couples 90 massage. Spectacular experience! Must try if you go! Property had 3 infinity pools. Hotel offers complimentary boat to/from the hotel to the Asiatique night market. Because we so loved our stay, we spent much of our time at the Shangri-la resort. We loved the atmosphere, dining, scenery, and just relaxed as Thailand was our 4th country and definitely needed the rest. I loved the view and at night would just sit, sip on a hot cup of tea and just relax to the view of the beautiful city lights from my room. Even when i got up for a dip in the Next2 pool, when i walked back a chilled bottle of water was placed on my lounge chair. A must is to have the "Pretty Little Things AfternoonTea" in the Lobby of the hotel. The scrumptious delicacies are served in a golden 3 tier birdcage with foie gras, crab, finger sandwiches, desserts, and scones. The bellman made sure our taxi would take us to our destinations as we read taxi warnings. Shangri-la only allows taxis that run their meter and ensure their hotel guests are driven directly to the destination. The bellman would jot down the taxi number and also ask we jot down the number. Asked how our ride was we return to the hotel. Hotel also offers free personal wifi, which was so helpful when we needed access outside hotel property. I can hardly fault this place most of my stay (except if you are out there looking for fault like me lol ). I think it's one of the best location to enjoy the view of Chao Phraya river. I feel that this hotel was a very fulfilling hotel even though it was large but the way it decorated was very harmonious so I didn't feel as if something was missing or too overwhelming. Although it had a lot of guests when we stayed but I still felt comfortable and didn't have to share our space with anyone else, let's say it just right, may be because of its size and ambiance. Very friendly and professional staff and great service. I think they are very well aware of equality too. The room we stayed in was nice and clean and housekeeper very attentively to help. Amenities and toiletries were very good. I like them so much and in fact I bought some products which remind me of our stay when I got home. Breakfast was good. Cocktail was great. Boat were available to travel to surrounding riverside areas. Walking distance from train station. One other thing which make me remember this place is my taro bun at breakfast. I think I could be better if; The pool would be better if it was bigger. Although the room over all is good but it would be better if it was bigger. I assume you get what you paid for. A few waitresses had a little bit of attitude in the executive lounge (Horizon). Would be better if they d pay more attention to guesses and be more friendly. When I got of the hotel boat, I notice that the boat attendance offer her hand to others (both ladies and gentlemen) as to help them to get off safely. However I didn't have that from her. The bell staff did tell us if our taxi (on the way to the airport) would be a meter or a fix priced one. We wouldn't mind to pay a little extra (fix priced usually more expensive than meter one) but would love to be informed. Note We stayed in a executive club floor (27th floor) of their Chao Phraya wing ( the other which is a smaller one call Krung Thep wing) We had breakfast on executive club (not their coffee shop which I assume much larger) There are some security check points (similar to those ones in airport) at the hotel entrances
"Still a great hotel"
I know there are better and newer hotels in Bangkok but the Shangri-La is still a grand old place. The location by the river makes it more interesting but that is offset a little by the fact there isn't much around it. However, for getting to the the Grand Palace etc its great as you can get the Chao Phraya Express boat from nearby (Don't get the Tour boat as its 40THB, the Express is 15). The hotel also has its own shuttle to Asiatique. There is a Skytrain stop close by, too. The restaurants are good, the pool area is lovely and although the rooms are a little tired and dated everything is spotlessly clean. Finally, the staff. Every single one of them that we encountered in a 4 day stay were perfect and the service they give is absolutely brilliant.
Stayed at the Shangri-La in early June for 3 nights in the executive suite. The room accommodation was excellent. The breakfast buffet was one of the best ever! Customer service from the greeters, to Mamy (who helped us with our luggage) and to everyone else at the NEXT 2 restaurant, the Salathip restaurant and the Chi Spa was exceptionally great. Our kids loved the hotel. We will definitely stay there next time when we are in Bangkok!
"A fantastic stay - highly recommend"
Stayed in the Shangri-La in may for 2 nights. Booked a river front room - highly recommend doing this as the views of the river are phenomenal. I have to say the overall highlight has to be the pool and the wonderful staff. The guys at the pool will guide you to the perfect spot (sun or shade). You can also sit facing the riverfront watching the boats go by or else facing the pool. Lunch can be ordered and delivered to your sun bed. Just heaven! The attention to detail was out of this world. 5 * Customer Service. The pool guys also came around with cold towels, ice lollies, fruit skewers and cold water to keep you cool during the day. We ate in the thai restaurant one evening. Lovely food and the dancers were a nice touch for entertainment. Do book the breakfast when booking your hotel room. Well worth paying for the buffet. It will appeal to all! Overall this is the second time i have returned to this hotel. While i am not a big fan of the city itself, this hotel keeps bringing me back en route to the islands! While in Bangkok i recommend getting the hotels boat up to the night market. Nice to do in the evening and its not too chaotic up there.
