"Honeymoon of my dreams "
My husband and I stayed here in 2015 for part of our honeymoon - I apologize my date is inaccurate. I joined trip advisor after the cut off but had such an amazing experience here that I wanted to make sure they got some credit where credit was due. I love to travel and have been coming to Asia since I was a pre teen. Let me tell you, of all of the beautiful places I've been, this is the only place I've shed tears when leaving! This resort is full of beautiful, kind people helping to make guests' stays wonderful, lush landscape that I've never seen in my life, and a plethora of wildlife on land and water. We had initially booked 4 nights on a water villa and 3 in the private pool ocean view billa but we ended up having so much fun in the water villa that we stayed there there for our entire stay. There is no better pool than the lagoon and we spent hours on end swimming in the beautiful water. The villa was spacious and comfortable - I had some of the best sleep of my life here. The bathroom was as big as some bedrooms and super luxe. We loved the deck area as well and ended up ordering room service many nights and eating dinner on our deck. My one complaint was we had some hit or miss dinners - one was the Vietnamese cuisine which was just not that great and I would not recommend the Maldivian BBQ night. For the BBQ, we spent close to $300 USD for mostly a buffet of premade food with some BBQ mixed in. We barely ate any of it. We also had some amazing food, too. We did the night fishing excursion and while we didn't catch any fish, the crew members gave us one and DR. Ali's made it into the best sashimi I've ever had! The seafood and Indian/Maldivian/middle eastern food was the way to go. The breakfast was also very good and we had the most lovely young man help us each day. The room also comes with a "helper" and you are given a cell phone to call them with any needs. Such a treat! Also, the bikes were a favorite feature of ours. My husband even tried the golf and really enjoyed it. To sum it up, this resort certainly is a bit pricier than others and more remote to get to, but spend the money, take the trip - you won't regret it one bit! It was a splurge that we are still so happy we did. Thank you Shangri la for the best honeymoon a gal could ask for!
"booking maldives is confusing go with a winner "
Shangri-La Villingili This was my first time to the Maldives and the Shangri-La Villingili. On arrival, we were met by a team of senior staff who shook our heads, welcomed us to the island and gave us a beautiful flower lei accompanied with a wonderful sweet chilled coconut drink in the shell. The Island is a little larger than most (from what I could see from the sky and my research) others; That was a reason for selecting, as I do like to keep busy. My stay was for 4 nights. The bikes are a kind of entertainment and a necessity to get around during the day. They are better than waiting for the trolley. You can come and go as you please. You can stop off and look at shells and sit and watch the Indian Ocean. To walk from the Spa to our over water bungalow would have been 20 minutes. The bikes help close that gap. There is no problem riding a bike in the rain, we had a few of those days. Riding on the walkway overwater to the bungalow is not recommended. Only guests with good skills and balance should attempt to drive on the boardwalk to overwater bungalow. Take it SLOW! Walk if not comfortable. Villingili is a beautiful place. The beaches and water are pristine. The transfer is a bit of a chore from MELE to Gan ( 1 hour 10 min flight) and then a boat to the island. (under 10 minutes) The staff meet you in MELE and then in Gan and take care of you and are very helpful. Traveling in the Maldives means taking everything in stride! Chill and just let things happen. Like the delayed or cancelled flight in MELE… We had two hours so went to the main island and walked around the city for an hour with a guide. The Lounge in MELE (both directions) is comfortable and was included. Watch the time on your phone when you arrive. It is one hour difference in time between Gan Airport and the island; even though it is a ten minute boat ride from the airport to the hotel. I was told that they do it to enjoy a longer day from when you arrive. – That said, you are likely to be at the airport, an hour and 20 minutes before your flight when you only need 45 minutes. For accommodations, I would suggest the over Water Villas- They are a must. Originally we had a garden unit with pool and wall to the beach. We upgraded. The mosquitoes and pests elsewhere would really take away from your open air enjoyment. While it is hot, bugs will find you when you sit outside. Bring some bug spray. Since we were in an over water bungalow it is ok to open both sliding doors at the ends of your over water room and enjoy the sea; Enjoy the sound of the water under your bungalow. The size of the over water bungalow is wonderful- It places most other hotels to shame. There is fresh fruit provided daily, Nespresso coffee maker and bottle water are also included. We were on the all-inclusive so no drinks were included from the fully stocked mini bar. The service over all was very good, all were attentive and if there were something that you did not like management came out to try and fix it. They really went over the top to fix flavors or food or drinks or anything you enquired about. Housekeeping worked well and they never bothered you when you were in your bungalow One night we came back and the tub was filled with a foot high of bubbles and soapy water; The top sprinkled with rose pedals and the entire bathroom was lined with candles. Very nice! Each day we came back to our room to see some incredible towel animals on the bed. Our staff had quite the imagination. Relaxing is what you do here. Don’t expect to watch TV and on the internet. (though available) Go to enjoy the beauty of this place. The buffet breakfast is great. More choices than necessary and there is a lot of customization for soup and of course omelet station. The other restaurant food and menus were good and you could always find something that you wanted to try. I was on an all-inclusive and found it to be adequate and the night I went to Fashala $90.00 per person credit was almost enough to do a nice meal per person The sirloin steak was $65.00. Local produce from the surrounding waters and neighboring farms are at the center of the gastronomic offerings created. There is usually some live entertainment Dr. Ali's, (loved the name) is great and the menu is varied.- A culinary journey every dish at Dr. Ali’s Restaurant pays tribute to the mouth-watering legacy of this local legend. Take note, all of the restaurants were not open every day because of the hotel occupancy; They did do a good job to accommodate you at the restaurant that was open. Nice culinary choices and exchange for the all-inclusive. This information could not be available in advance, because the hotel does not know how busy it will be. For activities, the resort offers you all the usual fishing, sea sports, snorkeling, dolphin watching and diving, etc. You get free snorkel gear at the dive shop. While we enjoyed the dolphin watching (and we saw hundreds) This was fun but pricey at $80 each for 1 ½ hours. The resort offers the one and only golf course. The course is well maintained and the setting is beautiful. Be sure you don’t drive the ball off the island and be sure to bring your own golf balls- they are $3.00 each on the island. For me, it was much too hot to play. One day, I will return… I hope with an incentive group.
"The most amazing honeymoon we could have ever dreamed of!"
We cannot thank you enough for the trip of a lifetime. The Shangri-La Maldives is out of this world. The food was incredible, the staff were so friendly and helpful and we had an absolute blast. We've travelled a lot and this place is hands down the best resort we've ever been too. Massages, diving, snorkeling, sailing, swimming, relaxing, eating, drinking, sunsets... you name it and we did it. The over water bungalows are huge, very beautiful and sitting on the balcony you are in a world of your own. We are so grateful to everyone here for creating such an amazing memory for us. And a big thank you to Assad who was the best Villa Host and looked after us so well. We will definitely be back and anyone thinking of going... do it! You will not be disappointed :) Emma and Beau
"One of the world's most beautiful islands! "
What an incredibly beautiful island! We stayed in a water bungalow, I LOVED the shower on the deck, the sundeck with direct access to the reef and the peace and tranquility. You each get a complementary bicycle to ride around the island and complimentary snorkel, mask and fins. The water is incredible!!!! I do not go in the ocean as I am petrified but here I managed to conquer my fear due to its sheer beauty. We saw sooooo many beautiful fish, reef shark, turtles, rays it was just incredible. I can not express how beautiful this place is. The only thing that let's it down is the food.. it is fairly average which was disappointing.
